Can You Regrout Over Mold
The mold and mildew will disappear like magic. It may not be necessary to re-grout the entire shower, but we think it will look the best. Partially re-grouting risks a rough, uneven look. This process will take time and patience, but once youre done with the grout saw, give the tile a good washing with plain water.
How To Remove Mold With Baking Soda
Unlike bleach, baking soda wont harm or discolor the tiles or present any health hazards to the occupants of the home. It will clean the affected area very well, but wont be as efficient in killing the mold spores as bleach.
There are several different ways you can use baking soda to clean the tiles and grout in your home:
- Mix 1/2 cup baking soda with one gallon of water and spray the mixture on the affected area. Wait for about half an hour, then rinse the surfaces thoroughly with warm water
- Dip a damp sponge into pure baking soda and scrub down the tiles and grout with it. Rinse with warm water
- Stir 1/2 cup of baking soda and several teaspoons of water to make a paste you can spread directly over the mold. Apply the paste to the moldy grout, let it sit for 10 minutes, then scrub away with a bristle brush. Rinse with water and repeat, if necessary.
Good to know: You can use borax to clean mold in the same way as baking soda it is highly alkaline and very effective at cleaning, disinfecting, and deodorizing.

Why Do I Have Mold In My Shower
Its very common for mold to be found in the shower. There is lots of water and humidity in the bathroom which mold just adores.
Frequently running water in the shower creates wet surfaces and puddles of water. If you dont dry this moisture out quickly it can easily lead to mold growth.
On top of this, when the water in the bathroom does dry out it evaporates into the air and increases the humidity. Steam from the shower or a hot bath also makes the bathroom more humid. Since bathrooms are often not well ventilated the humidity tends to hang around and wet surfaces take a long time to dry out. Enter mold.
Another reason mold grows in theshower is because grime from body oils and soap scum which is washed off andonto the shower or tub create a food source for mold to feed on.
Basically, if mold were to have achoice vacation destination it would be the shower. Soooo inviting.
How To Remove Black Mold In Shower Drain
Shower drains contain cellulose materials via soap scum, body hairs, and oils and lots of moisture so they can be a breeding ground for black mold growth!
Its important to keep drains open and clear of cellulose materials. Treat the drain with vinegar and/or baking soda and water solution periodically to keep it clean and prevent mold spores from developing.
You can then follow the tutorial found on this page for a good method of removing black mold from a shower drain, or you can try this simpler method.
The important thing is to NOT pour bleach down your drain, and to take your time with the process.

How To Prevent Moldy Shower Caulk
Moisture reduction and control are the keys to preventing mold from growing on surfaces in the home. In very humid climates, proper ventilation and the use of air conditioning and de-humidifiers in the home will lower the humidity level to the preferred range of 30-50 percent relative humidity. In arid climates, outdoor air can be utilized to reduce the humidity level in the home. After every use of the shower, follow these recommendations to reduce the recurrence of mold.
Vented bathroom fan Building codes have been updated to require one vented fan in every bathroom. Older homes are exempted from this requirement until the bathroom is remodeled. If there is a fan present, ensure that the exhaust pipe is vented to the outside of the home and not just into the attic area. Run the fan for one full hour after using the shower.
Remove wet towels Instead of hanging towels on the racks in the same room, consider hanging the towels outside to dry or run them through the dryer. When mold is an issue, wet towels are one of the main sources of moisture and must be removed to lower the relative humidity level in the room.
Dry the shower stall Water will cling to the shower tile and caulking during and after a shower. Use a towel to dry the shower walls and then remove the towel from the room.

How To Ensure Mold Free Grout
Having mold free grout boils down to keeping the humidity out of the bathroom. You can buy a dehumidifier and keep it running, or keep the door to the bathroom open.
Both of these methods will keep the moisture levels below what mold needs to grow. Even just turning on the bathroom fan could work to avoid mold growth. Any way to keep the air moving through the bathroom, and the moisture out of it is an excellent idea.
A shower squeegee can help to remove excess moisture. You may use a tile primer that is water-resistant to paint the moldy area with it. That should ensure no mold ever grows there again.
If you encounter extremely moldy grout that resists your cleaning efforts, it may be time to remove old grout from tiles and replace it with new. Sometimes starting over can be the most efficient option.
Use Hydrogen Peroxide To Clean Mold
Hydrogen peroxide a highly effective fungicide and whitening agent, may do the trick when all other mold removal methods fail.
You can make a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide and spray it on the affected area, but for better results you need to apply the peroxide directly over the grout:
- Mix hydrogen peroxide with white flour to create a thick paste. Apply the paste to the grout and allow it to work overnight before rinsing well with cold water
- Apply a thick baking soda paste to the moldy area . Pour hydrogen peroxide over the paste so that it begins to fizz this will help loosen the mold. Scrub with a stiff bristle brush, then rinse away with water. Repeat as needed.

There is no doubt that the best way to clean mold from grout is to use natural cleaning agents. Sometimes, however, even hydrogen peroxide and bleach wont be powerful enough to kill the mold spores and remove the problem. Always Run An Exhaust Fan While Showering
Almost every bathroom is outfitted with an exhaust fan. It is important to run the exhaust fan both during and after using the shower or bathtub to eliminate excess moisture and humidity. If your bathroom does not have an exhaust fan, try to shower with the window cracked or leave the door cracked open to allow moisture to escape.
How Do You Get Black Mold Out Of Shower Grout
To remove the black stains that mold leaves on non-porous surfaces like grout, mix equal parts of bleach and water in a spray bottle and spray it over the stained area, allowing it to sit for several minutes. Return and spray the area again, and use a scrub brush to scrub out any remaining discoloration.

How To Get Rid Of Black Mold In Shower Caulking
I wrote a whole post about removing black mold from shower caulking, though my bleach method has been critiqued for not actually doing more than removing the stain and color of the mold. And the mold did come back 6-9 months later.

This is because bleach is no longer considered to be the best way to remove mold. It is only effective if the mold is on a non-porous material like tile, bathtubs, glass, and countertops. It doesnt reach the mold growing underneath the surface. Also, bleach can damage the materials it is used on as its a harsh, corrosive chemical. The fumes are strong and harsh and it must be handled with gloves.
But, it does do a great job at removing the mold stains, but the mold isnt truly killed.
You can instead use vinegar, baking soda, ammonia, oxygen bleach, borax or hydrogen peroxide.
I, however, have not been able to find many tutorials on how to use these products specifically for cleaning moldy caulking in bathrooms, so if anyone has tried using them, with success, Id love to know! I tried making a paste of water and OxiClean and slathered it onto the moldy caulking, but it did absolutely nothing. It dried out shortly after application and didnt remove the mold or the stains at all.
Eliminate The Mold Triggers
Removing the mold is just half of the job done. If you will not change the environment in the shower, it is a matter of time until the mold will form again. For this reason, it is essential to detect what was the cause of mold growth and try to limit it.
Here are the two essential factors that might be the cause of the mold in your shower: humidity and pH.
Humidity
If you have mold in your shower, you are probably dealing with a hydrophilic mold type such as Stachybotrys , which needs high water activity to grow. Because of that, it is essential to limit the moisture to a minimum. Here are a couple of tips, how to achieve it:
pH
As it was stated earlier, mold thrives in pH 3 7. Changing the pH of the grout will help you to create a hostile environment for the mold. For this purpose, from time to time, pour a solution of baking soda and water onto the shower walls where the mold used to form. This way, you will protect the grout from the potential future mold build-up.

I always go straight to domestos. Use a toothbrush dipped into domestos and add to the grout. Leave for about 30 and brush off again. Works everything for me.
Undiluted vinegar will kill the mold, but will not de-colorize it to much of any degree. I would treat it with vinegar first, let it dry and then go about trying to bleach out the mold. It sounds like you have a moisture problem and that needs to be resolved, a powerful venting fan, dehumidifier are 2 suggestions. After eack use, wipe down the shower to remove excess water, you might even consider a box fan to help it dry quickly until you have a more permanent solution. The Hometalkers have given you some suggestions on how to treat and clear up the mold. It may come down to removing the grout, re-grouting it and sealing it so the mold cannot take residence. Tips For Treating Mildew With White Vinegar And Baking Soda
Luckily, treating mildew with some common household items is normally a pretty quick and easy task. If youve noticed mildew in your bathroom, you can typically get rid of it using some white vinegar and baking soda. To do this, fill a spray bottle with white vinegar, spray the areas that are covered with mildew and let the white vinegar sit for a few hours.
Once the vinegar has sat for a couple of hours, use a moist cloth to scrub the mildew off of broad areas and a toothbrush to remove it from hard-to-reach spaces like corners. When youre done, rinse the entire area with water.
If any mildew still remains, make a paste that consists of three-parts baking soda and one-part water. Apply the paste to any remaining mildew and spray the affected areas with more white vinegar. Use a bristled brush to scour the area, and then rinse off any residual paste. If mildew is still present, use more paste and vinegar to treat the affected area again until the mildew is gone.
