Get Rid Of Shower Curtain Mold And Mildew In The Washing Machine

Want to know how to get rid of shower curtain mold and mildew with the help of your washing machine? Most shower curtains are machine washable, even plastic ones. Depending on the material, different temperatures and cycle settings might be required, so you must check the laundry symbols on the care label beforehand. Add one or two bath towels to the load these will help to scrub off the dirt and prevent the shower curtain from wrinkling and tearing.

As well as adding the usual amount of laundry detergent, include one cup of baking soda to remove tough stains and wash on a warm, gentle setting, says Kerry Hale. When the washing machine switches to the rinse cycle, pour in half to one cup of distilled white vinegar to ensure all the baking soda is removed.

Skip the fabric softener as it can add a layer of film to your shower curtain that attracts dirt and grime.

Dry the shower curtain thoroughly afterwards. As a rule experts advise against putting a shower curtain in the dryer as it can melt or distort the fabric. However, some fabric curtains can tolerate machine drying again, check the care label. If theres no temperature specified, opt for a low heat setting and hang immediately after the drying cycle ends to avoid creasing.

Vinyl and plastic liners always require hang drying. Hang them back up on the shower rod and stretch out to their full length.

    Install A Humidity Meter

Another idea is to install a humidity meter in your bathroom to monitor the humidity levels. This way, you will know how high the humidity is and whether you need to take further steps to reduce it. Aim to keep it as far below 60% as you can.

You can pick up an inexpensive humidity meter from your local hardware store.

Alternative Ways For Shower Caulk Removal

    • Hydrogen Peroxide hydrogen peroxide is an anti-fungal, anti viral and antibacterial solution. Putting some hydrogen peroxide on a sponge or scrub brush and scrubbing the black mold would remove the it from the caulk.
    • Vinegar Vinegar can kill 82% of mold species. Vinegar is a mild acid that can be used to kill the fungus. Spray the vinegar onto the caulk sealant and let it sit for about an hour. After the hour has passed, come back and scrub the vinegar from the caulk. This will remove and kill the black mold.
    • Baking Soda Baking soda will not only kill the black fungus, but it will absorb some of the moisture to help keep it from coming back. Simply put a quarter teaspoon of baking soda into a spray bottle with water. Shake the bottle until it has dissolved. Spray onto the sealant and scrub with a scrub brush until it is removed, then rinse with water. Then spray the area again and let it dry to help prevent it in the future.

HOW TO CLEAN A MOLDY SHOWER (super satisfying clean with me!)
  • Practice good ventilation. Open the bathroom window when showering. Turn on the exhaust fan when showering and leave it on for 30 minutes afterwards. Keep the bathroom door open when showering if possible.
  • Shower drains contain biofilm and cellulose materials such as soap scum, body hairs, and oils and lots of moisture so they can be a breeding ground for black mold. It is important to keep drains open and clear of cellulose materials. Remove any hair after showering and pour a little vinegar down the drain weekly to keep the drain clean and prevent mold spores from developing.
  • After showering wipe down the entire shower including all your shampoo and soap bottle.
  • Once a week spray the shower with EC3 Mold Solution Spray or Remedy Mold Treatment Spray to kill any new mold spores that may be trying to root.
  • Clean your shower from top to bottom every 14 days at a minimum. Weekly is better but no one has time for that! So shoot for every two weeks.
  • If possible, DO NOT USE one of those suction cup non-slip mats in the shower. Those are a mold magnet.
  • Treat your shower with Superstratum Mold and Mildew Protectant every 6 months to prevent mold growth. You can read how and why Superstratum works here.

Causes Of Mold Growth On Grout

Mildew will grow anywhere damp or wet, making an area like the shower a perfect home. Unfortunately, because the shower area is constantly exposed to moisture, keeping mould at bay requires prevention and staying on top of the problem. In addition to the moisture from the shower head, shower grout can also begin growing mold if the bathroom itself has a high humidity. Improper ventilation is a leading cause of mold growth. To prevent problems from occurring in the bathroom, try ventilating the room after your morning shower by opening the window. This should reduce the humidity in the room, allow the shower to dry quickly and keep mold at bay.

I also previously wrote a post about the best way to clean grout by using and comparing Magic Eraser on grout, baking soda to clean grout, and a steam cleaner for grout. They all worked fairly well!

I didnt at the time have black mold growing in my shower grout though.

One of the best things you can do when battling black mold in shower grout is to replace the grout completely and re-grout. Mold often seems to grow on grout as it starts to age and crack as it is porous.

No, this is likely not an easy or cheap process, but this will ensure the grout is indeed mold-free. Just be sure to use top-quality grout!

Plus, you may also discover a water issue behind the tile or grout that you can better address so as to prevent it from growing again.

But, if your grout still looks like its in good shape, then try one of the following methods:

Once you remove black from shower grout, be sure to use a squeegee to remove excess moisture and water from your tiles and grout after showering to prevent it from coming back.
