The Three Typical Types Of Kitchen Cabinet Moldings That Our Clients Consider Are Crown Light Rail And Toe
They usually come in pieces 96 long and in a large variety of designs, shapes and widths.
1. CrownBy far the most complex of the three general types of moldings, crown moldings are optionally mounted on the tops of the wall cabinets and are most often a total height of between 2 and 6. The taller crown moldings are custom designed with multiple pieces and are installed to suit your kitchen. One nice classic design incorporates 36 high wall cabinets and 6 of crown molding that reaches an 8 high ceiling. If you have 8 high ceilings and choose to go with 30 high wall cabinets, you can still add crown moldings to the wall cabinets. In that case you leave space above the cabinet/crown combination.
2. Light RailThis molding is installed on the bottom of the wall cabinets. It adds a more finished customized look to your kitchen and helps hide the under-cabinet lights that we suggest you install when you remodel your kitchen.
3. Toe-KickWe HIGHLY recommend toe kick molding for all kitchen cabinet installations. It is mounted on the front and bottom of the base cabinets. Toe-kick moldings hide the shims usually placed under the base cabinets that provide a level countertop surface as well as the separation joints between adjacent base cabinets.
Before You Get Started
First, select a crown molding with a vertical height about the same as the narrowest gap between ceiling and cabinet.
Then glue a 34 -inch-thick strip of clear poplar to the moldings top edge. Make sure the strips front edge and the top of the molding are flush, as shown at right.
When the glue sets, sand or plane the joint so that it wont be visible after painting. Now you can scribe this section to fit tight against the sloping ceiling.
Crown Mouldings On Varying Cabinet Heights
Cabinet crown mouldings are the finishing touch for a kitchen renovation but you need to plan for them early in the project. Once the cabinets are bought and installed your options are limited to the situation you have in front of you.
Using cabinets of varying heights or “landscaping” as we call it, is a common way to add visual interest to a kitchen. This requires a bit more up-front planning and thought in order to be successful especially when it comes down to the crown mouldings.

Measure And Cut The Front Section Of The Crown Molding
Measure and mark the front section of crown molding to the cabinet width. Set the miter saw to a 45-degree angle cut. Place the crown molding so that it rests upside-down and at a 45-degree angle against the saw fence. Cut at one mark, then move the molding along to the next mark. Position the saw to the opposite 45-degree angle cut and make the second cut.

Are The Bottoms And Sides Of The Cabinets Finished
While both the left and right sides of the cabinets are finished, we only warrant the finish on the exposed side. Any finish issues on sides hidden during installation will not be entitled to repair or replacement.
The bottom and top of the cabinets are not fully finished because the bottom and top are typically not visible when the cabinets are mounted at normal heights.
Designing A Kitchen With An 8′ Ceiling

There are two choices when designing cabinets for a kitchen that has a lower ceiling. You can either use 36″ tall upper cabinets, which allows for crown molding to be used along the top or you can use 42″ tall upper cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling without any molding. Below is a breakdown of the pros and cons of each choice.

What Are The Rules
Is there a design rule that states you should install molding on the tops of your wall and tall cabinets? The truth is, there are no hard and fast rules that force you to add a piece of molding to the tops of your cabinets. Although many full overlay wall and tall cabinets are designed with a wider reveal at the top specifically for the installation of some type of molding. Traditional and Transitional styles lend themselves well to the use of Crown Molding. Contemporary or Modern designs, which are more clean-lined, often do not require a Crown Molding.
A Contemporary Kitchen Without Crown Molding
Measure And Cut The Crown Molding
This step is important. You should measure and mark the front section of the crown molding. Use a miter saw for this step. Set it to a 45-degree angle cut, and place the crown molding so that it rests upside-down and at a 45-degree angle against the saw fence. Cut by one mark at a time.
While attaching the front section, make sure that it is precisely positioned. Then, with the nailing gun, drill a couple of nails through the lower edge of the crown molding and into the nailing strip. The crown molding may hang at this point, but this is only before adding the side sections.
On the other side, the two side sections of crown molding only need angle cuts on one side. The other side can be a 90-degree cut. Make a 45-degree cut on the left section of crown molding to complement the front crown moldings 45-degree left side. Repeat this for the right side.
When attaching side sections, find someone to assist you. You should place the left section of crown molding against the left nailing strip. Make sure that the two sections of crown molding perfectly meet. Again, nail the side crown molding section in place.
The next step of this process is to match the corners. To do this, drive one screw through one board to help them stay together. Its the same process for both sides.

Measure And Cut The Side Sections Of The Crown Molding
The two side sections of crown molding only need angle cuts on one side the other side can be a straight 90-degree cut. For the left section of crown molding, make a 45-degree cut on one side to complement the front crown molding’s 45-degree left side. Repeat this for the right side.
Just as you left an expansion gap between the side nailing strips and the wall, do the same for the side crown molding sections. Make sure that you leave about a 1/8-inch gap rather than having the crown molding touch the wall.
How To Duplicate Crown
When you can’t find a matching profile at a lumberyard or home center, the easiest way to get a copy of your existing crown is to send a cutoff to a wood millwork shop or a maker of foam or plaster moldings, such as Fypon or Hyde Park. But if a scrap isn’t handy and your crown doesn’t have details like dentils and leaves, make a template using a profile gauge . Press the comb-like device against the crown, then trace the shape onto cardboard, noting which edge is the crown’s face.

Nail Size For Crown Molding On Cabinets
I have 15 ga and 18 ga , Would 18 be too thin for cherry crown modling on wall cabinets? I can get a16 ga if its perferable.

I have done 2 kitchens now with my porter Cable 23G pinner for crown and other small moldings for the cabinets.Works great. And yes on the gluing of joints and miters.I also use an 18G for the under cabinet molding but typically use the pinner for the crown. you can barley even see the nail holes when you done.
if the crown is of good size I may be more inclined to use the 18G because they have a small head where as the 23G pinner nails have no heads . But if you gve good support to the back of the crown the 23G pinner can’t be beat.

Make Your Test Pieces
Small-test molding pieces serve as templates. Make adjustments on these first before transferring to the final piece of molding. Place one test piece in the upper corner of the wall and draw a roughly 45-degree angle across the molding. Lay a second piece on the opposite wall, and draw another roughly 45-degree angle. Use the compound miter saw to cut the two test pieces and ensure the two test pieces form a tight fit on the wall.

One way to give your wall cabinets a finished, polished touch is by installing crown molding along the top edge. Crown molding helps eliminate the dark appearance of open soffits on wall cabinets and gives them a fine carpentry look, even if you have only beginner carpenter skills.
The crown molding is not nailed directly to the wall cabinets. The trick that makes this project so simple is the addition of wooden nailing strips at the top of the wall cabinets. These strips help you accurately position the crown molding and provide a place to nail onto other than the cabinet face. Because the strips are stepped back, the crown molding will cover them, rendering them invisible.
Should You Caulk Cabinets
Its not necessary to caulk the seam between your kitchen cabinets and wall. But because drywall isnt perfectly smooth, you can get gaps between the cabinets and the wall, so some contractors and kitchen installers might apply a bead of caulking to close up those gaps and make it look clean and even.

How Deep Should Upper Cabinets Be
Standard wall cabinet depth is 12 inches, and 24 inches deep over the refrigerator to allow easier access. When designing a kitchen with a staggered height cabinet look, it is important that you make taller cabinets 3 to 15 inches deeper. This allows room for crown moldings of the shorter height cabinets to finish nicely into the side of the cabinet, and not block the door opening of the taller cabinet.

What Is The Best Way To Keep The Cabinets Clean
Kitchen cabinets should be dusted or cleaned periodically like any wood furniture. Clean all spills or water immediately wood cabinets should be kept dry. Dust cabinets with a pre-moistened or damp cloth. Follow the grain of the wood when dusting wiping across the grain can cause scratches. Use only clean soft cloths do not use dish towels as they can contain grease. Mild detergents and warm water or wood polishes can be used for cleaning cabinets. Crown moulding is more commonly found on the top of traditional kitchen cabinets but is not limited to just that. What Do I Need To Do Regarding Delivery

For curbside delivery, you will need to move the cabinets into a protected area. We recommend using 2 or 3 persons to move the heavy drawer base cabinets, large corner cabinets, oven cabinets and pantry cabinets.
If inside delivery is available to you, you are responsible for the protection of the floors during delivery.
Cabinets are delivered wrapped in protective cardboard and/or plastic. Delivery personnel will not be able to wait for you to unwrap the cabinets. DO NOT USE A BLADE against the front or sides of the cabinet when removing the wrapping.
Wood products react to extreme temperatures and to changes in temperature and/or humidity by expanding and contracting. Cabinets must be stored indoors to prevent damage.
Large corner sink base cabinets can require up to 36 of clearance from outside into the kitchen.. Lazy Susan corner base cabinets require at least 32 of clearance. Tall pantries and oven cabinets will require additional ceiling height to tip into place and will may not be able to make tight turns into your kitchen. Please advise in advance if you require the cabinets to be delivered unassembled.
