I am no stranger to an inbox full of questions about mold. They run the gamut but lately I have had an onslaught of questions such as how do you clean moldy dishes, will dish soap kill mold, how do you remove mold from pots and pans, can I keep dishes exposed to mold, and tons more! Blenders, Instant Pots, Tupperware, Teflon, glassware, rice cookers, and crock pots that has been exposed to mold were also all big concerns.
In 2014 I went through a toxic mold nightmare. Through thatexperience I learned exactly what to do with everyitem that could possibly be found in a house. This includes dishes, glassware,silverware, and other kitchen items that have been exposed to mold.
When walking away from toxic mold isnt an option, most people seem to want to keep their kitchen items. Slightly baffling since these are easy to replace but like I said, I get a lot of emails asking how someone can clean dishes that have been exposed to mold.
Would I clean and keep kitchen items that have been exposedto mold? Yes. I didnt keep anything from my original moldy house but that wasbecause it was beyond highly contaminated and I was basically dying. It wasntworth it to keep anything.
Since then, I have been able to successfully clean and keepcertain non-porous items after minor mold events.
What Do Professionals Use To Kill Mold
Scrub moldy surfaces with mold cleaner
water and 1/2 cup bleach mold cleaner to kill the mold. Use a soft brush and work until signs of the mold disappear. After scrubbing the surfaces, simply allow the bleach solution to continue to penetrate the surfaces and dry. Wipe off, but DO NOT RINSE these surfaces.
Does Vinegar Kill Mold
Vinegar is a fantastic, natural cleaning product that can be used almost anywhere in the home. It can help fight bacteria and germs, and it certainly works on most molds. Indeed, white vinegar can kill up to 82% of known molds.
Because it is naturally acidic, white vinegar does a great job of ridding mold on its own. That said, it can also be combined with other, chemical products to help make those products even more effective than the chemical product might be, on its own.

How Do You Prevent Mold Inside Your Dishwasher
The best way to prevent mold from growing inside your dishwasher is to keep it clean and dry after each use. When you unload the machine of your dishes, look around inside to see if there is any build-up of food anywhere. If there is, remove it and wipe down the areas where it was. Also, take a paper towel and wipe around the doors seal to dry it and clean it of any food particles that may have been lodged in there. The final step is to open the door a little to let the moisture escape and the unit to dry out inside. These measures will go a long way to keep your dishwasher clean and healthy.

Use Borax To Clean Moldy Dishes
Borax is a well know and strong cleaning product that you can use to clean a lot of things. You can use it to clean your bathroom, clean your wall and remove stains from your toilet as well. To use it on moldy dishes, add a cup of the borax to some warm water and use a sponge to scrub the dishes off.
Basic Steps For Getting Rid Of Mold
First assess the situation…how much mold do you have? What kind of surface is it covering? Can you identify the type of mold?
The type of surface will make a huge difference. For instance, a porous surface, like drywall, wood or acoustical ceiling tile may need to be carefully cut out and replaced. Why? Because surface cleaning won’t penetrate into a porous surface because the mold has set down roots.
Mold can be easily wiped away from a non-porous surface like glass.
Some professionals recommend that any contaminated area larger than 10 square feet shouldn’t be undertaken by a non-professional.
A mold removal company will not only remove the mold, they will take care of any moisture problems by fixing drainage and ventilation problems, as well.
People with compromised immune systems should NOT be cleaning up mold! Even cleaning one square foot may be dangerous for their health. When in doubt, contact a professional mold remediator.

Use Bleach To Clean Moldy Dishes
We all have bleach in our house somewhere underneath the bathroom sink or underneath the kitchen counter skin. Using bleach to clean moldy pots and pans will kill 99.9% of the bacteria on them. So your pots and pans will be safe to use, however, make sure to wash off the bleach entirely so the dishes do not smell like bleach.

How To Get Rid Of Mold Smell In A Saucepan
Wipe with a sponge dipped in vinegar, let dry, then rinse with hot water.

How Long Does It Take For Mold To Grow On A Plate
It doesnt take as long as most people would think. Even if you are fairly up-to-date with dishes, the truth is that your time frame is going to be fairly short.
If you have mold and water near your plates, it can take as little as 24 to 48 hours for the mold to germinate. With that said, it can take a little longer depending on the conditions around your plates.
Cleaning A Dish Drying Mat With Bleach
If youve tried the vinegar and hot water solution to clean your dish mat and youre still seeing mold, its time to break out the heavy duty cleaner bleach.
Here are some tips for how to clean mold from a dish drying rack with bleach:
- Mix half a cup of bleach with two gallons of water in a bucket or other container that can be used for mixing chemicals.
- Soak the entire mat in this solution for at least 30 minutes before scrubbing off any visible dirt or grime with soap and water if necessary.
