How To Remove Moss From A Roof

How to Clean Up Attic Mold | This Old House

If your roof has sprouted a moss infection, you can remove it before it becomes serious enough to impact the performance of your roof. Moss is tough and typically you will not be able to remove it by hand. However, you can use a chemical solution to loosen the moss without damaging the shingles. We dont recommend that you step on the roof for moss removal.

Materials Youll Need

  • A ladder .
  • A moss-specific cleaner that does not use bleach and is rated by the EPA.
  • Or your own cleaner mix of mild bleach or mild detergent mixed with water in a spray bottle. You may mix 2 cups of chlorine bleach with 2 gallons of water. Or you can use 8 ounces of dish soap with 2 gallons of water.

Option #: Do It Yourself

Attics are probably the most dangerous area of your home. They are extremely dangerous even for experienced mold technicians who have done countless attic mold removal jobs. One wrong step and you could fall through the floor joists and cause yourself serious injury.

Besides falling through the ceiling, you can also step on a protruding nail, hit your head on a rafter or nail, run into nesting animals or electrocute yourself, among many other dangers if you are not careful.

Furthermore, respiration and breathing can be very difficult in attics due to their usually being small and hot confined spaces and even doubly so when the small confined attic space is filled with mold spores.

Lastly, even if you avoided all the dangers mentioned above, attic jobs can be complicated and require things like negative air setup, containment, creating temporary flooring, and other variables that take time and experience that can only be accrued from many attic jobs to learn and do properly.

Not All Sheathing Is Equally Mold Resistant

Ironically, despite the many gains weve made in the building codes, weve still managed to install progressively worse and worse attic sheathing materials over the decades. Of course, the problem of mold growth is much more complicated than a simple choice of materials, involving ventilation, insulation, air sealing, etc. But our choices of materials havent made mold prevention any easier.

Black Mold Removal How To Remove Toxic Attic Mold

Mold remediation contractors use a variety of techniques to address attic mold growth, including dry ice blasting, hand sanding and encapsulation. The first two are effective, though often cost prohibitive. As you can imagine, the labor required to hand scrub every square inch of roof sheathing is quite significant. Additionally, encapsulation is still necessary, as the hand sanding and brushing will not remove the underlying stain left by the mold spores.

Dry ice blasting is an attractive, but expensive, choice. The technique uses solidified carbon dioxide beads to blast the surface material from the sheathing. The concept is similar to sand blasting, minus the mess. Unfortunately, dry ice blasting produces a large amount of carbon dioxide gas, which in a confined area, can lead to a drop in oxygen levels. This necessitates several safety measures that can quickly ruin the economic feasibility of the process.

Encapsulation addresses several of these problems in an efficient and cost-effective manner. We have more information on the subject of mold encapsulation on our mold treatment page.

Thankfully There Are Some Killer Alternatives To Bleach

    1) Sodium hydroxide products are NOT recommended!! A chemical alternative to bleach uses theantifungal agent sodium hydroxide also known as lye. Lye-based products appeared on the market a few years ago, but turned out to be even more dangerous to use than bleach! Even at low concentrations, permanent damage could be done to the roofing, possibly even dissolving the roofing nails!

Fortunately, most lye-based products have been removed from the market.

How Do I Remove Roof Mold

Removing roof mold from a house is not only important in the prevention of a number of serious health conditions, but also gives an overall better look to the house. While there are a number of ways to remove roof mold, some of the best include using chlorine bleach solutions and copper sulfate solutions. In addition, preventing the growth of roof mold to begin with will eliminate the need to get rid of it.

One of the best ways to remove roof mold is to use a chlorine bleach solution. To do this, start by mixing a solution that combines one part bleach with three parts water. Pour the mixture into a hand sprayer, similar to that used for spraying starch onto clothing. Be aware that while this application process can be time-consuming, it is essential to ensure complete saturation. Allow the chlorine bleach solution to remain on the roof for between ten to fifteen minutes, and then rinse with warm water from a garden hose. Finally, examine the roof for remaining mold. If any mold still exists, repeat the process, being sure to rinse the roof after each application of chlorine bleach.

    Is Attic Mold Dangerous

How to Get Rid of Mold in Attic

There are many types of mold some toxic and some not. That said, the mold might not be a health risk if it doesnt move into other areas and is contained in the attic. And, because warm air rises, mold spores that are confined to the attic is less likely to spread to other parts of your home.

But, regardless if the type of mold is toxic or not, theres no reason you should leave it there. Even non-toxic mold can cause health problems, most notably allergies and respiratory illnesses. So, while you shouldnt freak out immediately after you notice mold, its best to address this issue promptly.

    Difference Between Moss And Algae

Though they might be grouped as the same thing because they grow in the same area of your home, moss and algae are actually quite different and distinct.

Moss always appears more green and fluffy-looking than algae, though it might appear browner during dryer seasons. Moss will also grow up off the roof, while algae will grow flush to the shingles and fixtures, staying flat and unobtrusive. Algae will appear in many different colors such as gray, blue, green, or brown.

A small amount of moss is relatively harmless, but left unattended, it can grow and eventually damage your asphalt shingles. Moss should be removed. Algae actually fosters the growth of mold, which can lead to very serious issues. Algae, too, should be removed quickly and efficiently.

Why Its Important To Remove Roof Mold

This summer, Greater Atlantas rainy conditions and high humidity created the ideal conditions for roof mold. When allowed to grow unchecked, mold stains and damages roofs.

Mold is usually the result of algae growth. In rainy, humid weather, algae can take hold and grow quickly on your roof. This causes the roof materials to remain damp, which promotes rot. When rot sets in, so can mold. Even with no rain, warm, humid weather creates ideal conditions for quick mold growth.

Roof mold thrives in shady, moist conditions. The problem commonly occurs on the northern section of the roof and in areas that remain shaded throughout the day from surrounding plants or buildings. Throw in excessive moisture from rain and humidity, and you get mold overgrowth.

Here are five good reasons to remove mold and moss from your roof as quickly as possible.

    Roof Mold Is Unsightly

Roofs are the most visible element of the home. Drive down the street, and youre likely to notice a homes roof from a distance. Mold is often black and creates streaky, ugly stains on your roof. These stains can make an otherwise attractive home seem neglected.

    Mold Can Travel

Mold can wash off your roof in the rain and get tracked into your home. Indoors, mold can take hold and create health problems. If theres a great deal of rotting on the roof because of moss, mold can penetrate roofing materials. Mold promotes wood rot and erodes the asphalt in shingles. It can also spread onto adjacent structures.

For Small Removal Projects Use A Wet Vacuum Or Spray

If you have mold on your attic plywood in small areas, you can remove it yourself so long as its collecting in a small area .

    Mold Removal Safety Precautions

If you have to remove mold concentrations or perform any black mold removal covering more than a few square feet, we recommend you take these precautions:

    • Wear old clothes and shoes that you can launder or throw away after the cleanup work.
    • Wear special N-95 or P-100 respirators, in addition to goggles and gloves.
    • Set an old box fan or a cheap new one in a window to ventilate the room while working.
    • Wrap and tape moldy contaminants in 6-mm plastic, and double-bag mold-infested debris in garbage bags for disposal.
    • To control airborne spores, moisten moldy areas with a garden sprayer while you work.

You can get rid of mold-contaminated wooden surfaces using a wet vacuum that can fill its tank partially with water to control mold residue. Wipe the surface with a damp sponge or cloth thats been treated with clean water or wood cleaner.

Once the surfaces have been thoroughly dried, use a HEPA vacuum cleaner on the plywood and safely dispose of all the contents by putting them in well-sealed plastic bags. Any contaminated material, including mold-infested insulation, should be sealed in plastic and disposed of as regular waste.

Will A Dehumidifier Help With Controlling Mold

A dehumidifier will help keep down moisture, which prevents mold growth and spread. Many people, however, dont have electricity run to their shed, and these machines need to be plugged in. There are battery-operated models available, but they wont handle the square footage of larger sheds.

If you do have electricity in your shed, its probably best to work on other ways to cut down on moisture, such as adequate ventilation rather than depending on a dehumidifier. You can still run the dehumidifier occasionally on extra humid days or days when the weather prevents you from opening and airing out the shed for several days.

How to Get Rid of Mold in Attic – Mold Busters

Attics are too dangerous to try to fix on your own and even if you avoid the dangers, attic jobs are complex and there is a good chance someone with little experience will do the job improperly and potentially expose themselves and their family to mold related health symptoms. In addition, fixing the moisture/water problem while leaving the mold behind is like putting the finger in the dam because sooner or later you are going to have to remove the mold too.

If you hire the right professional, you will obtain peace of mind for yourself and family that the job was done right, and you can regain the clean healthy air in your home that you and your family deserve. You can also breathe a sigh of relief that you do not have to worry about nasty mold impacting your health and others living with you.

And of course, you can rest easy knowing that if and when you decide to sell your home, the transaction will not be held up or killed by a previously unknown attic mold problem.

Professional mold remediation companies follow industry guidelines when removing attic mold. The most common type of remediation is chemical based using powerful cleaning agents to kill the mold, and then covering the attic with powerful antifungal sealers that will prevent mold from growing back. Chemical based mold remediation is highly effective and usually costs the least, so its the most popular option.
