Replacing your shower grout every 6 months is the most important step you can take to keep mold out of your bathroom. Typically a Borax / water solution works well. Youre not relying on the killing power of solution, but rather the detergent/cleaning action. Youll need to lightly scrub the surface to dislodge the mold growth. In many instances, some staining will remain in the wood. This is simply residual pigment and is not a health issues. As always, wear a tight fitting respirator/mask to prevent inhalation of the spores youll dislodge when cleaning. All cleaning should be performed outside of the home. Immediately launder all clothing worn during the cleaning process.

Thanks for the question Linda.
If the mold is ONLY the cosmetic black mold that we describe
at BLACK COSMETIC MOLD then it really is only cosmetic and could be left in place.
There are two difficulties with this:
- First you may have trouble recognizing the cosmetic mold I describe in that article, though sometimes the growth patterns make it clear. To address this you could spend roughly $50. to send a representative tape sample of the mold to a mold test lab for confirmation.
- Second, while the black mold I describe is indeed harmless on framing lumber and virtually always came in on the lumber from the lumber yard, also one wants toWatch out: in some cases, particularly on lumber that has been wet, or on treated lumber, my own field and lab tests have found Aspergillus sp. and Penicillium sp. growing among the harmless black mold.
So we might want to clean the lumber.
I tend to stay away from labor intensive approaches and from incomplete approaches . Keep us posted and send along some photos if you can as what you learn may help others.

Mold can be found growing on virtually any surface, that is, if it has a food source, enough moisture, and the ideal conditions
Cellulose-based materials like wood provide the perfect source of nutrients to promote mold growth.
How does this happen?
1. Moisture Content of Wood
First, lets look at the moisture content of wood. The Moisture Content of wood is the total amount of water present in the material.
In general, the moisture content of wood depending on the species generally falls between 8% to 19% by weight.
When a contractor uses wood to build your home, the ideal moisture content should be around 14%.
When the moisture content of wood gets to the 20% range and higher, significant mold growth will begin to occur in several days.
No matter where you are or where you live, youre exposed to mold spores.
When mold spores are floating around in the air land on a wet piece of wood, lumber or any material that it can break down and digest, guess what?
The spores will begin to germinate and grow on the surface of that material.
So, a piece of wood, furniture or other cellulose-based material that gets wet and is not dried within 24-48 hours provides the ideal habitat for mold to grow a rapid pace.
To illustrate this, take for example a recent natural disaster, Hurricane Michael, that occurred in Florida.
This storm caused storm surges which flooded many homes along the FL panhandle.

White Mold On Basement Wood
White mold on basement wood is another common occurrence since basements tend to be quite damp and warm, allowing mold to thrive. The ease of tackling white mold in a basement depends on the size of the area affected and the severity of the growth.
White mold will eat away at the wood itself, making it much weaker and more susceptible to breaking.
This may eventually lead to the wood collapsing, potentially injuring a person or damaging any items stored in the basement.
So, how should you tackle it?
- Assuming its a small to moderately sized infestation, you will be able to get rid of the white mold using either vinegar or baking soda and water. We would recommend using vinegar as it can soak through to the lower layers of the wood, ensuring the entire colony of mold is killed off.
- Make sure to wear some protective gloves while using vinegar, and to get as many windows open as possible to keep the basement aired out.
- You should contact a professional if the mold growth spans more than just a meter or two in your basement to ensure your safety.
How can you prevent the White mold from returning?
- As with furniture, simply using vinegar on the affected area should be a great way of preventing the white mold from returning, especially if you let it seep into the deepest parts of the wood.

Guide To Cleaning Mold From Smooth Wood Surfaces
Perfectly adequate moldy-wood-surface cleaning may be accomplished by wiping or power-washing or media blasting.
