How To Remove Black Mold In Shower Drain

Bathroom Cleaning : How Do I Remove Mold and Mildew From Shower Caulking?

Shower drains contain cellulose materials via soap scum, body hairs, and oils and lots of moisture so they can be a breeding ground for black mold growth!

Its important to keep drains open and clear of cellulose materials. Treat the drain with vinegar and/or baking soda and water solution periodically to keep it clean and prevent mold spores from developing.

You can then follow the tutorial found on this page for a good method of removing black mold from a shower drain, or you can try this simpler method.

The important thing is to NOT pour bleach down your drain, and to take your time with the process.

Is Shower Mold Toxic

Due to the way bathrooms and showers are constructed today, the black mold you see in your shower is less likely to be the really hazardous type of mold. This is because your shower areas and surfaces dont have cellulose which is required for most of the really hazardous types of mold to grow.

That isnot to say that one of the more toxic molds cant ever grow in your shower. Theycan. If you have a bigger issue in your bathroom or home and THOSE spores haveinfiltrated your shower then your shower can become a breeding ground for somereally bad mold. But regular ol mold in the shower usually more allergenicthan anything.

Clean Around The Toilet

Don’t forget to clean carefully around the toilet as well. Water and other particles easily splash out of the toilet when you flush and scrub with a toilet brush, so keep floors and walls clean around. Here you can use the same all-purpose cleaner or bathroom cleaner as for the outside of the toilet, provided that the surfaces are not made of natural stone which don’t tolerate the acid in those products. Natural stones such as granite and marble require milder agents such as oil soap.

The slightly acidic nature of hydrogen peroxide also acts as an anti-microbial agent that eradicates some pathogens, including but not limited to fungi, mildew, algae, bacteria, and others.

Since some molds can be an allergen, this is a plus.

Also, peroxide does not release harmful chemicals like other biocides such as bleach.

This oxidization is also helpful in removing stains caused by mold or mildew. Simply treat the area with hydrogen peroxide and scrub gently to remove the stain.

You can even use it on fabrics just apply directly to the material and let it sit a couple minutes before laundering. For bathtubs and other surfaces, make sure to rinse and dry the area thoroughly.

Why Do I Have Mold In My Shower

Its very common for mold to be found in the shower. There is lots of water and humidity in the bathroom which mold just adores.

Frequently running water in the shower creates wet surfaces and puddles of water. If you dont dry this moisture out quickly it can easily lead to mold growth.

On top of this, when the water in the bathroom does dry out it evaporates into the air and increases the humidity. Steam from the shower or a hot bath also makes the bathroom more humid. Since bathrooms are often not well ventilated the humidity tends to hang around and wet surfaces take a long time to dry out. Enter mold.

Another reason mold grows in theshower is because grime from body oils and soap scum which is washed off andonto the shower or tub create a food source for mold to feed on.

Basically, if mold were to have achoice vacation destination it would be the shower. Soooo inviting.

Option : Use Commercial Mold Removal Products

Store-bought cleaners can really come in handy when youre looking to get rid of mold in a bathroom.

Youll need:

  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Bleach spray

Ventilation is important. For your own safety, you may want to wear a mask and rubber gloves, run the bathroom fan, and/or open a window during this process.

Start by applying a liberal coating of antifungal spray to the affected area. Make sure its a designated antifungal spray and not just a standard shower or bathroom spray, since the former has specific properties that are intended to address mold spores.

Follow the directions on the bottle, which may require that you leave the spray on for a set period of time prior to removal. When its time to remove, use a toothbrush or sponge to scrub the mold away.

Next youll want to clean the area with a bleach spray to remove lingering stains and help prevent future spores from proliferating. Let the bleach sit for 5-10 minutes and then once again take a toothbrush or sponge and scrub the area.

The last step is to apply distilled white vinegar to the area, which has additional antifungal properties. Fully ventilate your bathroom after youre done, and be sure to dry up any lingering moisture.

Thats why it is important to use a moisture meter to see if there really is water and mold building up behind shower tiler.

If you see mold, it is recommended to do a 50/50 water and bleach wash first. Spray it really well and let it completely dry.

Then spray the area with Lysol or a vinegar, baking soda, or borax mix and let dry.

It is best then to apply something like Kilz, an oil-based primer to prevent mold from growing there again.

Dealing With Mold Under Caulk

A common issue is when mold forms under caulking, such as in your shower or bathtub. This mold is just as visible but harder to reach, and unfortunately it may require that you remove the caulk to get to the mold and then re-caulk when youre finished.

If this is the case, use needle-nose pliers and a utility knife to cut and scrape away the caulk as needed, and then treat the mold using one or more of the methods noted above. When youre done and the area is fully dry, use a caulking gun to apply a new, clean layer.

What Causes Black Mold On Shower Caulk

Mold grows where moisture is present for long periods of time. When the relative humidity level in the bathroom remains above 60 percent due to poor ventilation, the spores that are present in any home will attach to the shower caulking and begin to multiply. Mould will feed on wood, soil, cloth or paper. Most of these substances are present in the bathroom all the time. Take a look at the EPAs brief guide for mold and moisture in your home.

Can Bathroom Mold Cause Illness

For the most part, mold just looks bad. For some, it can irritate allergies and asthma.

Mold is relatively harmless, but given the right circumstances it can definitely cause some irritation, Tolliver said. If you have pre-existing allergies or COPD or some sort of respiratory condition, the spores can actually irritate the lining of your lungs and can increase your risk of asthma attacks or COPD exacerbation.

People who are affected by bathroom mold will most likely experience runny noses, coughing and scratchy throats.

Ogden noted that people with allergies should be tested for which specific allergens bother them so they can best protect themselves. Mold is one of the irritants that can be identified through allergy tests.

Doctors can and should identify what the culprit is, she said.

Over-the-counter treatments can frequently ease the feeling associated with an allergy attack, but more severe cases could require a doctors intervention.

Minor adjustments can keep mildew and mold in check to prevent potential allergies.

Cleansers with bleach, or even white vinegar, can often keep the slimy, hairy growths from taking root in the bathroom. Wearing gloves and a mask can protect people from inhaling any mold spores as they scour the bathroom surfaces.
