    Daily Care Keeps Cushions Clean

To keep the detailed cleaning to a minimum, there are few day-to-day things required to keep cushions clean. Use a whisk broom to regularly brush off all your pillows, paying close attention to the crevices.

If your pads are the victim of sudden rainstorms, set them upright in the sun for faster drying time. When liquid or anything else spills on the cushions, clean it up as soon as it happens.

Use a paper towel to soak up liquid or a vacuum or broom to sweep up loose debris. Keep a bottle of cleaning solution on hand to spot-treat stains as they appear. To dry cushions, place them on their edges.

Should I Use Bleach To Clean Up Mold

Part 3 Restoring musty, moldy foam camper cushions

The EPA recommends against using bleach to clean up mold, with the caveat that professional cleanup crews may use their judgment on a case-by-case basis. Sterilizing the affected area with bleach isnt that effective when there are mold spores in the air. If thats all thats done, then the spores will land and start growing again. Fixing the root problem will keep mold from sprouting in the first place.

Bleach also causes another problem for outdoor cushions most materials will fade in color and bleach can destroy foam.

Try the vinegar method first before reaching for bleach. Check the label to see if its bleach safe and dilute it! Use only ½ cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water.

And if the mold problem is so pervasive through cushions that you cant clean it through other methods, then it may be better to replace the items.

How do I get mold out of outdoor patio cushions?

There are different treatment options depending on the type of fabric the cushions are made of and brand. If they are made by Sunbrella®, there is great cleaning information on their website, which you can check out at . Note that for general mildew removal on machine launderable textiles, we recommend a solution of ¼ cup Clorox® Regular Bleach2 per gallon of water. Items should be fully submerged for 5 minutes, and then rinsed before finishing up with a hot water wash using detergent + 3/4 cup Clorox® Regular Bleach2. Sunbrella® recommends a more concentrated bleach solution for mildew removal, which actually matches our recommendation for mildew removal on exterior surfaces like vinyl siding. Since Sunbrella® fabrics are 100% polyester this makes sense.

For non-Sunbrella® fabrics, as long as they are 100% polyester the same solution should still be suitable I would just test a hidden part of the cushion first to be sure the fabric wont be damaged by a bleach solution. To do that, apply add 2 teaspoons Clorox® Regular Bleach2 to ¼ cup water and apply a drop of the solution to a hidden part of the cushion. Make sure the drop soaks into the fabric. Wait 1 minute and then blot dry. No color change means the cushions can be safely bleached.

Best Way To Clean Heavily Soiled Cushions

Before winter, give your cushions a thorough cleaning, as it makes it easier to pull them out in spring. Before cleaning any pillows or cushions, look for cleaning instructions provided by the manufacturer as some covers feature fabric fasteners or zippers for easy removal, while others do not.

    • 1 teaspoon mild dishwashing detergent
    • 4 cups warm water

Mix dishwashing detergent, Borax, and water to create a general cleaning solution. Use a scrub brush to apply the solution to the cushions directly and gently scrub. Leave the cushion alone for 15 minutes, but dont let the pillow completely dry.

If stains are still present, reapply the solution and rub again. Rinse the cushions in cold water to remove all cleaning residue. Use a clean towel to blot up all excess water. Set the cushion on its edge to dry.

If its too cold to allow the cushions to air dry, use a hairdryer to speed up the process. Do not place pillows in a commercial dryer utilizing any heat setting as it causes the cushions to shrink.

How To Clean Mold Off Outdoor Furniture Cushions

Outdoor cushions and fabric accents bring a bit of indoor comfort to outdoor spaces, but these materials can be prone to mold and mildew. Its important to invest in cushions and fabric that are not just easy to clean but engineered to resist water, mold, and mildew from the start, says Sarah Dooley, director of upholstery at Sunbrella.

Check the fabric or cushion manufacturers website for recommendations specific to their product. Bleach will harm the color of some fabrics, but others, like Sunbrella fabrics, are engineered to not discolor. Test the underside of a cushion before cleaning to determine if bleach will not harm the fabric.

Mix bleach and water according to the bleach manufacturers instructions. Spray onto the fabric surface or use a cloth to wipe the mixture onto the fabric. Let the bleach stand on the fabric for five minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. To avoid water rings, clean the entire surface area of the fabric. Some outdoor cushions come with removable covers that can be laundered in your washing machine. Spot-treat as needed before washing according to the furniture manufacturer’s instructions.

    The Pressure Washer Method

If you have a pressure washer, this method is a super-effective way to clear out mold and mildew and restore your outdoor cushions to their original condition.

As long as you use your pressure washer properly, this method works on all types of cushions and fabrics.

For this method, you need a pressure washer and a large, open, and hazard-free space.

If you dont have a pressure washer, you can either buy, rent, borrow one, or skip this method entirely .

    Tools and Materials:

    • Pressure washer cleaner, such as the Simple Green Total Outdoor Cleaner

    Instructions:

  • Attach the pressure washer to an outside water source, and set the PSI to the lowest setting to avoid damaging the cushions.
  • Pour your cleaner into your pressure washer soap reservoir and attach the soap tip. If you can adjust it, put it in the low-pressure mode.
  • Keep your cushions attached to your furniture, or lay them flat on a dry surface such as your driveway.
  • Using water only, soak the cushions.
  • Then apply the cleaner. Move the pressure washer wand in horizontal, sweeping movements. The soap will buildup on the fabric, creating suds.

  • Using the 40° tip, rinse the cushions with water, removing all soap residue.
  • Press and gently wring out the cushions to remove excess water and air dry in a sunny spot.
