Mold in your household is something every homeowner fears, especially when it comes to the highly toxic black mold. If you have mold problems, it usually means you have water coming in somewhere, so the first thing you need to do is address the source of the problem, whether it’s a leaky basement or a hole in the roof. As you’re fixing the root of the issue you’re also going to want to get the mold off of any of the surfaces that it has managed to grow on. This probably means your walls, furniture, and unfortunately, even your clothing.
One of the main ways your clothes might show mold is if they’ve been kept in storage. Maybe you’ve put your winter sweaters in boxes in a room of your house where you have an unknown moisture problem. Or perhaps you’ve accidentally zipped some hanging clothes into a plastic storage bag before they’ve had a chance to fully dry.
No matter how it happens, once mold has gotten into your clothes, you officially have a problem. The good is news is that you’re not necessarily going to have to throw everything away. With some persistence and quick action, you can rid those clothes of mold so they’re safe to wear again.

Removing Mold From Exterior Home Surfaces
Chlorine bleach is quite effective in cleaning all types of house siding, concrete, brick, and stone, but it is harmful to plants and lawns. Be sure to cover any vulnerable plants with heavy plastic sheeting.
Mix one cup of chlorine bleach to one gallon of water. The solution can be used with a garden sprayer, power washer, or for hand-scrubbing. Always wear safety glasses, gloves, protective clothing, and a respirator. The bleach solution will cause color-loss on any type of fabric.
Wet the moldy areas with plain water, then the bleach and water solution, and allow it to work for several minutes. If the mold lightens, move to another area. If stains remain, scrub the area and then reapply more bleach and water solution. Allow to air dry completely.
Rinse down nearby planted areas with plain water.
How To Remove Mold Stains From Non
Here is a simple way to remove ammonia mildew or mold stains from bleachable clothing.
Remember that some clothes or items cannot be bleached. You should use lemon juice or white vinegar in such a case. Find a cotton pad and soak it in either vinegar or lemon juice. Now, place the mixture on the mold stain in the non-bleachable cloth. Now, leave it undisturbed for a few minutes.
Slowly remove the pad from the clothing item. Now, sprinkle a small amount of salt into the area. This will speed up the work of the acid. Make sure to place the cloth on a sunny spot and wait until it dries.
If the mold stains are still present, repeat the same procedure. Launder the cloth, as usual, to completely remove the mold stains. You can also use borax to remove mildew from clothes and fiber.

What Kind Of Mold Can Grow On Clothes
There are two major types of mold black mold and white mold. Black mold on clothes is not as commonly seen as white mold on clothes, but there are chances of both occurring under the right circumstances.
Black mold, also known as Stachybotrys chartarum, is an extremely toxic mold that grows in homes and produces mycotoxins that are capable of causing health hazards in humans, especially once its spores become airborne. By the time black mold is detected, it is often already a major problem in the home.
Though not as frequently perceived as a threat, white mold is fairly common in homes. It is harder to detect on lighter surfaces and has a propensity for changing colour. White mold also feels flaky, and has a powdery appearance, very similar to mildew, which is an earlier stage of mold.
White mold can be injurious to your health, though not to the same extent as black mold. Both black mold and white mold on clothes are dangerous, causing lasting damage to the surfaces they come in contact with, and must be treated as soon as they are recognised.

Removing Mold From Carpet
Are mold stains dangerous? Yes, they can be if not treated properly.
Wool and silk carpets should always be cleaned by professionals. However, if only a small area of the carpet is infested, you can try this on your own. Find a chlorine bleach solution and gently apply it on the affected areas. Make sure to test the carpet by applying a bleach solution to a small area. If it seems fine and safe, continue with the cleaning process.
Use a steam cleaner to gently clean the affected areas of the carpet. If you do not have a steam cleaner at your home, use a sponge to scrub the affected areas. Dip the sponge in a solution of water and liquid detergent for better results.
Prepare a solution for a household beach with water. Use only a small amount of bleach, but add a large quantity of water. Sponge the solution directly into the affected area. Let it sit undisturbed for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove the existing moisture from the area with the help of a steam cleaner.
You should wait for the carpet to completely dry. This will prevent the chances of mold growth again. If there is any residual moisture present, use a folded towel over the affected area and stand on top of it. Wait for it to dry and wash the towel thoroughly before using it again.

- NEVER mix chlorine bleach with ammonia. The oxygen bleach listed above is different from household chlorine bleach. It is a natural cleaning product that does not contain sodium hypochlorite . Check the labels to ensure you have the appropriate product. If you are unsure, do not add the ammonia, simply clean without it.
- Some cotton curtains and other pieces will be labeled as dry clean only. While most cotton pieces can be safely washed, sometimes they are treated with chemicals to preserve their look or feel and regular washing will remove these chemicals. Dry cleaning will provide the optimum results.
- Avoid drying curtains in the dryer as they may shrink. It is best to allow them to air dry.
- Press curtains with a hot iron and steam. Professional pressing will help to smooth them more as the professional machines provide a higher heat and more steam.
- Oxygen bleach is safe to use on most colored fabrics and will not remove the coloring like chlorine bleach . Still, it is wise to always test a small area first.
