Dealing With Mold Under Caulk
A common issue is when mold forms under caulking, such as in your shower or bathtub. This mold is just as visible but harder to reach, and unfortunately it may require that you remove the caulk to get to the mold and then re-caulk when youre finished.
If this is the case, use needle-nose pliers and a utility knife to cut and scrape away the caulk as needed, and then treat the mold using one or more of the methods noted above. When youre done and the area is fully dry, use a caulking gun to apply a new, clean layer.
Secure The Working Space
Secure the room by hanging heavy plastic sheets over doors, windows, air registers and vents. Leave one window open so that you can blow contaminated air outside. Position a heavy fan to vent out the window, and let it run constantly while you work.
Power Tip: Be careful to angle the fan so that it doesnt blow directly on the moldy subfloor.
How To Prevent Mold In Showers And Bathrooms
The best way to get rid of mold is to prevent it from being able to form. Follow these practices to limit mold from growing in your shower.
- Turn on an exhaust fan or open a window when showering.
- Keep humidifiers at 50% or less.
- Clean your bathroom often with mold-killing products.
- Fix leaks, drips and other sources of moisture.
- Change air filters frequently.
- Dont leave wet towels or laundry on floor.
- Spray vinegar on shower walls regularly to prevent mold growth.

How To Clean Black Mold In The Shower On Silicone
The most environmentally and healthy way to clean black mold in the shower on the silicone is by spraying distilled white vinegar on the mold and then wiping it off. As mentioned earlier, white distilled vinegar is powerful and can be used as a cleaning agent.
Be sure to put gloves on your hands to do this so the mold doesnt get on your skin. If you find the mold is in little crevices, use an old toothbrush, spray vinegar on it, and then scrub the crevice.
If the vinegar is not working, you can use bleach, but make sure you wear gloves and wear a face mask as the chemicals are harmful.
How To Keep Mold From Returning
Make sure youve removed all of the mold. If there is any left under the surface, it will grow back. Additionally, mold can potentially grow on any area that stays wet for more than two days, so you want to also prevent it from returning.
Fix all leaks and ensure that youve eliminated the water source.
Seal any cracks or damage in the grout or caulking.
You ideally want the humidity to be 50% or lower. Increase ventilation by installing a bathroom fan, opening a window, or using a portable fan after your shower.
While a dehumidifier might be overkill for your bathroom, if you do have a persistent problem, it might be worth investing in a small one.

Preventing Condensation On The Toilet
In all three cases described above, condensation is the primary cause of mold growth. Thus, prevention must hinge upon preventing or lowering the condensation. If you have a working bathroom fan already installed, the solution is simple. Run the fan. If necessary, a push button timer with 20, 40, 60 minute increments can help ensure proper ventilation occurs. Bathroom fans often lack sufficient power. Youll know this if youre still seeing condensation even when running the fan for 60 minutes after each shower usage. Time for an upgrade.
If your bathroom does not have a fan currently installed, your options are much more limited. Opening the window can help, but this isnt comfortable in January. And realistically, most people wont keep the window open long enough to achieve proper ventilation rates.

What Didnt Remove Mold
When we first moved to our current house, I did a little research and experimented with a number of methods touted to remove mold from shower caulk. Im sure there are even more techniques than the ones listed below, but heres what did not work for me:
- Saturating the affected area with straight ammonia. This may be incredibly effective, but personally, I detest the smell too much to even try. And since I often use bleach when cleaning I figured it was better just to stay away from this one completely since combining bleach and ammonia produces toxic gas.
- Spraying with vinegar. This method proved completely worthless for my situation, although I believe it has some merit as a mold preventative. I do love vinegar for glass cleaning though! Take a look at this DIY cleaner I use.
- Making a baking soda paste with water. I found this only minimally effective on tough mold. Baking soda is a great natural cleaner, though, and the gentle abrasiveness was good for cleaning the tile and some mildewy spots.
- Combining baking soda and vinegar. Lets talk about this for a minute because I see this combination recommended all the time online. Baking soda and vinegar cancel each other out. This is just basic chemistry, yall. Combining baking soda and vinegar produces carbon dioxide and salty water .
Disinfect The Infested Area Wait And Scrub Again
Spray the freshly cleaned area liberally with the bleach and water solution. Allow the solution to work for 10 to 15 minutes. This length of exposure should kill any lingering bacteria and remove any stains that may remain on the surfaces. Use a clean scrub brush to go over the surfaces one more time.

Black Mold In Shower Health Risks
Thankfully, due to the way bathrooms and showers are constructed today, the black mold you see in your shower is less likely to be the really bad stuff the toxic mold or deadly mold known as Stachybotrys chartarum. This is because your shower areas and surfaces dont have cellulose which is required for the really bad type of mold to grow. Tile, ceramics, and cement-fiber backer board all make Stachybotrys less likely to grow.
But, it doesnt mean the black mold you see in your shower issafe for you either!
You can request some laboratory testing for it, but it isnt really that necessary and it can be very expensive.

How To Clean A Black Mold Shower Curtain
I am going to state the obvious and tell you that a simple way to get rid of black mold on a shower curtain is to just get rid of the shower curtain and buy a new one! They are not very expensive usually and ensure there is no more mold in your shower.But, if you dont like to replace items , cant afford to do so, or like a cleaning challenge, then there are some tutorials for removing black mold from shower curtains. Weve been able to remove some pink and black mold from our shower curtains through the years and it isnt all that difficult.
If you have a plastic or vinyl shower curtain liner, simply use a baking soda and water mixture and gently scrub it off then rinse with water. Then you can spray some vinegar on it to help inhibit more growth and remove any watermarks.
If you have a cloth or fabric shower curtain or shower liner, you will do something similar. I suggest heading to this post or this post for a good tutorial on how to do it indoors and outdoors
Lastly, you can throw your shower curtain into the washing machine with some laundry detergent and 1/2 cup baking soda , run on the gentle cycle . Or Ive done it with just a straight vinegar wash before too.

How To Get Rid Of Pink Bacteria In Shower
Despite “pink shower mold” not being the most hazardous microbe out there, it is still in your best interest to remove it as soon as you see buildup beginning to form.
