What Is The Scientific Name For Black Mold

Can Black Mold Spores Travel In The Air

What Is Black Mould?

Yes. Mold spores are airborne and can attach themselves to peoples skin, clothing, shoes, shopping bags, furniture, carpets, and even pets. Once spores enter your home, they can settle onto any surface and start to multiply. They can also enter your house through open doorways, open windows, and HVAC systems.

Mold spores are microscopic and are virtually found everywhere. They are naturally found in the air we breathe, both indoors and outdoors. Since spores are tiny and lightweight, they become airborne easily, every time we vacuum or walk on the carpets or even sit on our couch.

Where Does Black Mold Grow

Black mold can grow on pretty much any surface, given that it has a source of water or moisture in that area. This fungus thrives in moist, warm environments that are high in cellulose and low in nitrogen.

Some common household surfaces that can support the growth of black mold include drywall, floorboards, ceiling tiles, insulation materials, furniture, and carpets.

Black mold is most commonly found near sources of water, for example in the bathroom or kitchen. When an area in the household is wet and remains so for any period of time, the moisture weakens the area and creates a prime location for mold growth.

How Does Mold Form On Bread

As molds, and fungi in general, are heterotrophs, they are required to consume nutrients in order to obtain the energy needed to function. In order to grow, mold requires nutrients, moisture, air, and an appropriate temperature. The carbohydrates from wheat found in bread are suitable nutrients on which mold can grow, and bread contains the required levels of moisture to support mold growth. If the bread is in an environment with a temperature of greater than 4 °C and has access to the open air, mold can grow.

If they can make penicillin out of moldy bread, they can sure make something out of you. Muhammad Ali

Mold grows on food items such as bread by first coming into contact with the bread as a spore. Mold spores are ubiquitous in the air and float until they come into contact with an object on which they can grow. Once the spore has landed, it colonizes the food item, such as bread, by germinating into a hypha, which spreads out into the bread like a net. The hypha exude digestive enzymes which catabolize nutrients for the mold to absorb.

Growth Reproduction And Habitat

S. chartarum is a slow-growing mold that does not compete well with other molds. It is only rarely found in nature, and seldom encounters the kind of living environment occasionally produced by human habitation . The spores are only released into the ambient air when the mold is mechanically disturbed, particularly when wet. It is considered an uncommon contaminant of most indoor air.

Not all strains of S. chartarum produce mycotoxins, and under certain conditions some of these lose the ability to produce such toxins over time the presence of high indoor humidity does not imply that mycotoxin-producing S. chartarum is also present even intense exposure in a laboratory setting of rats to vapors from walls entirely covered in S. chartarum resulted in few notable biological effects . In another experiment, mice exposed to concentrations of mycotoxins from S. chartarum much greater than a human could obtain in any living environment showed no ill effects. According to one author, “These studies suggest that the concentrations of airborne spores of S. chartarum realistically obtainable in indoor air are too low to produce clinical effects.”

How Bad Is Black Mold Really

You don’t want mold in your home. Black, green, orange, yellow no matter the color, it’s all undesirable. Yet you don’t necessarily have to panic if you see it growing on your walls or windowsills. Because while mold can negatively affect your health, and sometimes dramatically, you may suffer no ill effects at all from mold exposure.

Mold is a type of fungus, and it’s everywhere indoors, outdoors and even in the air. That’s not too surprising when you consider there are more than 100,000 types of mold in existence, and possibly even millions. Mold gets into homes and buildings through open windows, doors, vents and ductwork. It can also attach itself to your clothes or pets when you’re outside, so you inadvertently bring it indoors with you.

Once indoors, mold grows wherever there’s a lot of a lot of moisture. That’s why you’ll often see mold around leaky windows or pipes, or on drywall after flooding. It also grows easily on paper and on fabric, carpet, upholstery, insulation and even in dust.

How To Prevent Mold

Controlling moisture is the key to preventing mold from growing in your home. The following tips will help stop mold from becoming a problem:

  • Keep the humidity in your house below 50%. Using an air conditioner or dehumidifier can help with this.
  • Make sure your house is clean, dry, and well-ventilated.
  • Fix any water leaks immediately.
  • Use ventilation fans in your kitchen and bathrooms.
  • Don’t put carpet in rooms that are likely to become wet such as the basement, kitchen, or bathrooms.
  • Make sure wet floor mats are dried quickly.

Black Mold: What’s The Big Deal

Black mold, the toxic killer lurking inside your home. Not so much. The terms “black mold” or “toxic mold” have been exaggerated in the media. It has installed feelings of fear and panic in homeowners around the country. At Buffalo, we spend the time to hear from the experts in the field. And our job is to share that information with you, dispel the myths, and share the facts about mold.

There Are Still Some Considerations:

It isn’t attractive to see in your home! Removal isn’t urgent but will most likely be requested during the sale of your home.

Identify the source. If you have mold in a room, it may be the result of poor ventilation which is a problem that should be fixed so that mold doesn’t come back after it is removed. Some spaces are just prone to mold growth because of how they are built.

Or, you may have mold from a previous water damage that was not entirely dried afterward. If you choose to get the mold remediated, it should not come back if done correctly.

Note: Bleach or “Killz” is ineffective at permanently removing mold. The suggested technique is like doing your dishes, the surface needs to be cleaned and dried, not simply covered up.

Be careful, mold spores are easily dispersed through the house through your HVAC system or foot traffic. You could have a bigger problem on your hand if the affected space isn’â’t contained. The CDC recommends full protective gear when cleaning. Buffalo employees wear full PPE gear and contain the affected area during cleaning.

Could Your Symptoms Be From A General Mold Allergy

Regardless of the species of mold in question, symptoms of a mold allergy can appear very similar, especially when looking at many individuals. So if you see black-colored mold and experience allergic symptoms, it could be Stachybotrys, or it could be another species of mold. That said, the same person can react differently to different molds. For example, one person may have severe dry eyes in response to a Cladosporium exposure, while Aspergillus exposure may cause wheezing and asthma-like symptoms.

Having black mold, or Stachybotrys chartarum, in your home is a terrifying thought for many Americans.

Due to somewhat exaggerated reporting about black mold by the media, many people think black mold is more dangerous than it actually is.

Based on the level of current research on S. chartarum, black mold is no more dangerous than other types of indoor mold.

Nevertheless, its still a good idea to familiarize yourself with what black mold looks like in case you ever encounter it in your home after a leak or water damage.

What Is Stachybotrys Chartarum ?

Stachybotrys chartarum is a relatively uncommon, slow-growing, greenish-black species of mold that occasionally invades damp or water-damaged buildings.

For a mycologist looking under a microscope, this species can be identified by its characteristic phialides and conidia. But for the average person, S. chartarum is nearly impossible to differentiate from other species of black-colored mold.

Colloquially, Stachybotrys chartarum is often called black mold or toxic mold. The name black mold refers to its color, which many people believe is unique to S. chartarum. However, this is not the case there are many species of mold that can be black in appearance but are not S. chartarum.

But for simplicity, well refer to S. chartarum as black mold in the rest of this article.

Growth In Buildings And Homes

Mold growth in buildings generally occurs as fungi colonize porous building materials, such as wood. Many building products commonly incorporate paper, wood products, or solid wood members, such as paper-covered drywall, wood cabinets, and insulation. Interior mold colonization can lead to a variety of health problems as microscopic airborne reproductive spores, analogous to tree pollen, are inhaled by building occupants. High quantities of indoor airborne spores as compared to exterior conditions are strongly suggestive of indoor mold growth. Determination of airborne spore counts is accomplished by way of an air sample, in which a specialized pump with a known flow rate is operated for a known period of time. To account for background levels, air samples should be drawn from the affected area, a control area, and the exterior.

Eliminating the moisture source is the first step at fungal remediation. Removal of affected materials may also be necessary for remediation, if materials are easily replaceable and not part of the load-bearing structure. Professional drying of concealed wall cavities and enclosed spaces such as cabinet toekick spaces may be required. Post-remediation verification of moisture content and fungal growth is required for successful remediation. Many contractors perform post-remediation verification themselves, but property owners may benefit from independent verification.

Association Of Stachybotrys Species With Sick Buildings

One of the best studies of building-related illness showed minimal relation to Stachybotrys. Miller et al. examined 50 Canadian homes in which the occupants had complaints of respiratory or allergic symptoms for which there was no explanation, although at the time of the study, occupants of only 6 houses had building-related illnesses. Looking at air exchange rate, moisture levels, and analyzing air and dust for fungus and fungal products in 37 of the homes, they found S. chartarum in only one house analysis of the 6 sick houses did not indicate fungus-related disease. During parts of the year when windows are open, indoor fungi are comparable to outdoor species . However, in this study, outdoor air spores were negligible and Penicillium and other soil fungi were most important. Toxigenic fungi included P. viridicatum, Trichoderma viride, P. decumbens, and A. versicolor. House dust usually contained appreciable amounts of filamentous fungi and yeast, and so it was expected that spores could be found in air, depending on the activity in the room.
