Essential oils have mcade aromatherapy a household word, but these natural compounds can do so much more. Tea tree oil is an insect repellant, antiseptic, and deodorizer and its one of the safest methods for getting rid of black mold. Tea tree oil is a natural fungicide that cleans up mold quickly and it helps prevent mold spores from coming back.

How To Clean Mold From Bathroom Ceiling

If you see mold spreading across your bathroom ceiling, you need to do two things. First, identify the source. Is there a leak above the bathroom? If so, eliminate the leak before cleaning mold from the bathroom ceiling. If the mold is caused by moisture in the bathroom, consider adding an exhaust fan or running a dehumidifier to reduce heat and dampness.

The next step is to clean the mold from the bathroom ceiling. Start by spraying the area with a vinegar solution. If the ceiling is coated with paint or another finish that allows for scrubbing, spray the vinegar directly on the ceiling and wipe with a clean rag. If not, you will need to scrape off and replace the affected ceiling area. Removing a textured ceiling covered in mold is a job better left to mold removal specialists, as it requires special ventilation masks and protective clothing.

Why Does Mold And Mildew Grow On Caulk

The bathroom is the perfect environment for mold and mildew to grow. Its important to take steps to prevent mold and mildew growth before it starts. Even when your customer cleans their bathroom regularly, these pesky fungi can cause health problems. If your customer struggles with asthma or allergies, mold and mildew can irritate those conditions and make them worse.

Mildew and mold form in warm, humid environments. All the moisture in the bathroom makes the perfect breeding ground for mildew and mold. Between taking showers and washing your hands, the bathroom can become a very humid environment very quickly. Mold and mildew can form from the residue of soap, shampoo, body oil, and other common hygiene products. This causes major problems and is hard to avoid.

If you dont use a mold-resistant caulk, homeowners will have to clean the bathroom daily to keep it from building up. Not only is this inconvenient, but it also increases their exposure to mold and mildew. This can hurt the air quality in their bathroom and be irritating for those who struggle with respiratory problems.

Mold can also grow underneath the caulk, which means you wont be able to see it or clean it. When mold and mildew grow underneath your caulking, it can cause long-term damage to the bathroom. However, you can keep your customer safe by upgrading to a high-performance caulk.

Mold is all around us and can grow anywhere theres moisture, so if youre not vigilant about removing it, the mold will eventually start to form. It might take months for this kind of growth, but sooner or later, itll be an issue unless someone intervenes.

How To Get Rid Of Black Mold In Shower Caulking

I wrote a whole post about removing black mold from shower caulking, though my bleach method has been critiqued for not actually doing more than removing the stain and color of the mold. And the mold did come back 6-9 months later.

You can see my video tutorial about how I did it though:

This is because bleach is no longer considered to be the best way to remove mold. It is only effective if the mold is on a non-porous material like tile, bathtubs, glass, and countertops. It doesnt reach the mold growing underneath the surface. Also, bleach can damage the materials it is used on as its a harsh, corrosive chemical. The fumes are strong and harsh and it must be handled with gloves.

But, it does do a great job at removing the mold stains, but the mold isnt truly killed.

You can instead use vinegar, baking soda, ammonia, oxygen bleach, borax or hydrogen peroxide.

I, however, have not been able to find many tutorials on how to use these products specifically for cleaning moldy caulking in bathrooms, so if anyone has tried using them, with success, Id love to know! I tried making a paste of water and OxiClean and slathered it onto the moldy caulking, but it did absolutely nothing. It dried out shortly after application and didnt remove the mold or the stains at all.

Thoroughly Remove Excessive Mold From The Bathroom

Before you start applying one of these solutions, try to remove as much of the mold as you can using a scrubby brush and wash rags.

If the mold infestation is severe, it helps to get rid of large chunks first.

Fill a bucket with soapy water and put rubber gloves on your hands. In fact, use rubber gloves when following any of the remaining tips.

You should also keep the bathroom door open to help ventilate the space. If the bathroom has a ceiling fan with a vent, use it to keep air circulating and reduce the risk of breathing in mold spores.

Do not worry about completely getting rid of the mold. The goal is to get rid of large patches of mold and any other debris.

Mold Removal From Fabric

Its easier than you might think for clothes to attract mold and mildew. A forgotten load of laundry in the washing machine, the pile of clothes at the bottom of a closet, or even the armchair in a humid room can all quickly become overrun with mold. However as long as you catch the problem early, your fabrics can still be saved.

Bleachable fabrics

If you can apply bleach to a fabric without worrying about discoloration, do it. Thats the fastest and most effective way of getting rid of mold. Many laundry bleaches can be used on white and colorfast fabrics, although you should always check the instructions, and never use bleach on wool or silk. Simply apply a solution of one part bleach to three parts water and let it absorb into the fabric for a few minutes before laundering as usual.

Non-bleachable fabrics

For fabrics that cant be bleached, use white vinegar instead. Either apply white vinegar to a cotton pad and place it on top of the stain for five minutes before laundering, or briefly soak in a solution of ¼ cup vinegar to one gallon water. Rinse through to remove the vinegar and launder as normal.

Natural Options For Removing Mold

Preventing Bathroom Mold

Bleach is great for removing mold, but to be honest it isnt the greatest stuff to expose yourself too. So for those of you that prefer more natural options for removing mold then you can try substituting bleach for any of the following.

White Vinegar: Vinegar is a great natural cleaner and is known to kill most varieties of mold. It can be applied as straight vinegar or diluted slightly if the smell is too strong for you.

Baking Soda: Mix baking soda with small amounts of water to form a paste and let it sit on the mold affected area for 10 20 minutes. Then use a bit of elbow grease and a nylon brush to scrub that mold out of existence! If you want to make a stronger paste, then use vinegar instead of water just dont use too much vinegar as this is also the method to make the famous model volcano.

If you are trying to remove mould yourself, there are certain safety precautions you should take.

Protect yourself from spores with eyewear, long rubber gloves and a mask that covers your nose and mouth. Remember to open the windows for ventilation and keep doors closed to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home.

As previously mentioned, do not try to remove any mould that’s been caused by sewage or contaminated water.

Put any clothing youve worn while cleaning straight into a bucket with warm water and some mild detergent to hand-wash them.

Any rags, cloths or sponges youve used should be put into a plastic bag and thrown away.

And Product : Mold Mildew Cleaner Gel

Here is a very common thing to see. My old mid-80s white tile in my guest shower and bathroom has accumulated black mold over the years. And of course, I have been lazy at cleaning it, and my roommates I had didnt clean it either.

Normal shower and bathroom cleaning mold and mildew removable sprays would not work. All the scrubbing in the world wouldnt work.

Then I found this Mold MildewCleaner Gel from Gelivable. It was a bit expensive but worth it. I liked the idea of the cleaning gel staying put on the grout instead of running down and not staying on the actual black moldy grout lines.

To use the gel, remove the cap, and then squeeze a bead of gel over the moldy areas. The gel will stay put. Then all you do is allow it to work its magic. Allow it to stay on the black mold for at least 5 hours, you may need to let it stay even longer.

This black mold spot on my shower tile had been there for many years. So I left the gel on for about 8 hours.

The results were absolutely remarkable. Years of caked-on hard-to-clean, stubborn black mold, gone. Next, all you do is wipe it off with a damp paper towel or washcloth and then rinse it really well.

There you have it, method 1 is a super success for this particular type of black mold situation.
