What Cleans Black Mold In Shower

I Can Recommend 3 Products:

How to clean that black mold in your shower.

Tilex disintegrates and removes mold and mildew with just one spray. It kills 99.9% of household mold & mildew and eliminates stains before your eyes. It contains Clorox bleach so don’t use it on fabric or materials that will be damaged by chlorine bleach.

The other is called Mold Armor. It’s a mold and mildew stain remover plus a mold growth blocker that removes mildew stains and provides effective long term mold and mildew stain prevention.

We all know that prevention is best.

If you have and area that is prone to the growth of mold and mildew, but you are unable to correct the cause of the growth completely, such as in the basement which frequently has a lack of sunlight, stagnant air, damp air and possibly high environmental moisture levels- there’s a product called DampRid that absorbs water out of the air, making the environment less prone to mold and mildew.

What Didnt Remove Mold

When we first moved to our current house, I did a little research and experimented with a number of methods touted to remove mold from shower caulk. Im sure there are even more techniques than the ones listed below, but heres what did not work for me:

  • Saturating the affected area with straight ammonia. This may be incredibly effective, but personally, I detest the smell too much to even try. And since I often use bleach when cleaning I figured it was better just to stay away from this one completely since combining bleach and ammonia produces toxic gas.
  • Spraying with vinegar. This method proved completely worthless for my situation, although I believe it has some merit as a mold preventative. I do love vinegar for glass cleaning though! Take a look at this DIY cleaner I use.
  • Making a baking soda paste with water. I found this only minimally effective on tough mold. Baking soda is a great natural cleaner, though, and the gentle abrasiveness was good for cleaning the tile and some mildewy spots.
  • Combining baking soda and vinegar. Lets talk about this for a minute because I see this combination recommended all the time online. Baking soda and vinegar cancel each other out. This is just basic chemistry, yall. Combining baking soda and vinegar produces carbon dioxide and salty water .

How To Prevent Mold In Showers And Bathrooms

The best way to get rid of mold is to prevent it from being able to form. Follow these practices to limit mold from growing in your shower.

  • Turn on an exhaust fan or open a window when showering.
  • Keep humidifiers at 50% or less.
  • Clean your bathroom often with mold-killing products.
  • Fix leaks, drips and other sources of moisture.
  • Change air filters frequently.
  • Dont leave wet towels or laundry on floor.
  • Spray vinegar on shower walls regularly to prevent mold growth.

How To Get Rid Of Black Mold In Shower Grout

I also previously wrote a post about the best way to clean grout by using and comparing Magic Eraser on grout, baking soda to clean grout, and a steam cleaner for grout. They all worked fairly well!

I didnt at the time have black mold growing in my shower grout though.

One of the best things you can do when battling black mold in shower grout is to replace the grout completely and re-grout. Mold often seems to grow on grout as it starts to age and crack as it is porous.

No, this is likely not an easy or cheap process, but this will ensure the grout is indeed mold-free. Just be sure to use top-quality grout!

Plus, you may also discover a water issue behind the tile or grout that you can better address so as to prevent it from growing again.

But, if your grout still looks like its in good shape, then try one of the following methods:

Once you remove black from shower grout, be sure to use a squeegee to remove excess moisture and water from your tiles and grout after showering to prevent it from coming back.

Clean Mold Off Silicone Caulking

Our Home from Scratch

A second option is to clean the mold off of the caulking. This is only recommended if the mold is very limited in size and growth. I would say anything that is less than five or six inches in length can be cleaned, then monitored to see if the mold comes back. If it does come back I would remove the silicone caulking and replace it with fresh caulking.

When you replace the caulking you should investigate the type of caulking you use. There are some new brands of caulking that are mold resistant or are treated with a chemical that kills mold. As always if you are not comfortable doing the job yourself that has experience in removal and or working with mold. They will often know how to control the issue, remediate it and fix the ongoing issue that caused the mold.

  • What Is Black Mould And Why Does It Form

Mould is a fungus that grows in damp, warm conditions, such as a bathroom, where there is very little airflow. It can start as mildew, a white form of fungus found on a flat surface.

The growth of black mould on bathroom walls and ceilings is due to excess moisture, which may start with condensation building up over time following a shower or bath. The warm, moist air meets a cold surface and clings to it, like windows.

Mould can build-up for many reasons, apart from a lack of ventilation in your bathroom these include leaking pipes, poor insulation or if condensation has not been removed following a shower.

Using White Vinegar To Clean Black Mold On Showerhead

Just like getting rid of limescale on your showerhead, you can use white vinegar to eliminate black molds on your showerheads. With its acidic nature, has antifungal properties and is therefore very effective in treating molds.

    What Youll Need:

    • White vinegar with at least 5 percent acetic acid
    • Old toothbrush

    Procedure

    Step 1
    • Unscrew the showerhead from its hose. It is easier to clean showerheads if you unscrew the stalk from the hose. Dismantle it as much as you can, making sure not to misplace any part.
    Step 2

    Step 3
    • Submerge the showerhead into the vinegar filled bowl and allow it to sit for one hour. Doing this will make it possible for the vinegar to enter the nozzles.
    • If the showerhead is fixed, you can spray the vinegar directly onto the moldy surface and allow it to sit for an hour.
    Step 4
    • Gently scrub the surface and nozzles with a toothbrush and rinse very well with clean water.
    • Using a cotton rag, wipe off any excess water and allow it to dry very well. Dont worry if there is a vinegar smell. It will disappear.
    Step 5
    • Assemble the showerhead and fix it to its hose.
