I went through Moldageddon in 2014 and since then have learned more than I ever thought I would ever need to know about mold. I know how to prevent mold, how to test for mold, how to clean mold, how to detox from mold exposure, and gobs more.

Hydrogen Peroxide And Borax

Remove the curtain, folding it inward. Bring it outside and lay it flat, mold-side up. In a spray bottle, mix 2 cups of hydrogen peroxide with 1 cup of water. Spray generously and let the curtain sit for 30 minutes.

Scrub the fabric with a soft brush to remove the mold. Work gently to prevent damage to the fabric. Rinse in warm water and check for remaining mold.

Make a paste of equal parts borax and water if the stain persists. Apply it to the mold and rub gently with the brush. Rinse and let dry. Wash the brush in hot water to kill the mold spores.

How To Eliminate Mold On Household Appliances

Just like you need to keep an eye on bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms for mold growth, so should you make sure that you’re regularly cleaning the appliances in them to keep mold in check. Refrigerators can be wiped down with distilled white vinegar for coffee makers, fill the reservoir with half water and half vinegar and let stand for a half-hour. Run the mixture through a brewing cycle, toss it, and then run plain water through several more cycles.

Washing machines should be cleaned every month. Run them empty, with bleach, on the hot water cycle. Check both washers and refrigerators for mold on door seals.

If stain persists, test in an inconspicuous place, then apply a commercial mildew stain remover, and use according to package directions.

Mold has to have the right conditions to grow on upholstery. First, there must be an organic food source mold cannot grow on synthetic materials but it can grow on the soil embedded in synthetic materials. There must also be moisture. The organic material has to stay wet for a certain period of time for mold to begin to grow.

Given this knowledge, here are Whites recommendations for dealing with mold on upholstery:

If your upholstered furniture has water damage and a substantial amount of mold growth, it should be replaced.

If there’s only a small mold stain, you can try using a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Blot it on the mold and allow it to work for a minute or so. Rinse solution from the area by alternately dabbing it with a damp cloth or sponge and a dry cotton cloth. This probably will not remove the mold, but it may help lessen the stain.

Consult a professional upholstery cleaner if the stain persists or reappears.

White also adds that silk, wool, antique or vintage upholstery should be cleaned by a professional.

Treatment Of Mold Exposure:

First, you should try to avoid any further exposure. If mold spores are inhaled, seek medical attention immediately.

If the skin has been exposed, wash the area with soap and water then rinse it off thoroughly with clean water. You can also use some hydrogen peroxide for added sterilization if needed.

After washing yourself or your clothing, you will need to treat the affected area with anti-fungal medication. Specifically for mold exposure, you should consult your doctor to see if it is necessary to use this medication. Don’t self-medicate since some medications can be toxic, take too much time to show results, or are not effective in treating mold exposure.

How To Get Mildew Smell Out Of Clothes

The best way to get a mildew smell out of clothes is to use a vinegar and baking soda treatment that will kill the mold and neutralize the odor. You can do this quite simply by adding vinegar and baking soda to your washing machine!

This method works great on musty-smelling towels, too.

Other effective methods include hanging up the clothes in bright, hot sunlight. Let them rest for a couple of hours. The sunlight may kill the mildew and the fresh air will make your clothes smell good again!

If you can safely bleach your clothing, chlorine or oxygen bleach will kill the spores and remove the cause of the bad smell.

Finally, you can also use commercial products like a laundry enhancer to kill odors.

Is A Little Mold On Fruit Ok

The USDA explains a little mold on hard fruits and vegetables, like apples, cabbage and carrots, is OK. You can cut off at least one inch around and below the mold, wash and then eat the fruit or vegetable. If they show no signs of mold and are not overly mushy, it should be safe to wash and eat them.

Removing Mold From Interior Walls Flooring And Carpet

If the mold is fuzzy and black, it may be much worse than just unsightly. The area should be opened to check for structural damage. Wear safety glasses and respiratory protection. All building materials should be bagged in heavy-duty plastic bags and disposed of properly. Allow the area to dry out thoroughly and make any needed repairs.

To clean off mold from porous surfaces like wood and drywall, a detergent should be added to the bleach and water solution to help it adhere. Mix one part dishwashing detergent, 10 parts bleach, and 20 parts water. Apply with a sponge or mop, trying not to over-saturate the surfaces. Do not rinse away, and allow the solution to air dry.

Carpet with mold or a musty smell should be removed completely. Wearing a respirator, cut the carpet and pad into small sections. Mist the materials and under-flooring with water to help prevent the spread of airborne mold spores. Wrap the carpet in heavy plastic for disposal. Use a wet/dry vacuum to thoroughly clean the area and allow to air dry for several days before replacing flooring.

Remove loose mold spores from outer coverings of upholstered articles by brushing with a soft-bristled broom. Do this outdoors, if possible, to prevent scattering spores in the house. Wash broom before re-using. Run a vacuum cleaner attachment over the surface of the article to draw out more of the mold. If the article is moist or damp, dry by using an electric fan and electric heater to heat and carry away the moist air. If possible, place the article in direct sunlight and air to stop mold growth. .

Sponge with a commercial dry-cleaning solvent.* Blot. Allow to dry. Sponge with water. Mix a Dry Spotter . Apply with an absorbent pad. Sponge with water.

Another method that can be used is to wipe the stain using a cloth moistened with a diluted alcohol solution made by combining 1 cup denatured or rubbing alcohol and 1 cup water. Blot thoroughly and allow to dry .

* Look for products containing petroleum distillates or hydrocarbon such as trichloroethane, xylene methylenechloride, methane, benzene and/or naphtha. These chemicals may be found in such spot removers and cleaners as Guardsmans Afta, Dap Cleaner and Thinner, GOOF OFF, M-l Remover, Goo Gone, K2r, etc.

CAUTIONS:

Baking Soda And Vinegar

Wash your fabric shower curtain in a washing machine. Add two terry-cloth towels to the load to help the cleansing action. Set the dial to gentle, the water temperature to warm and pour in your detergent as the tub fills.

Measure ½ cup of baking soda and add it during the wash cycle. Pay attention to the cycles and when it reaches the rinse action, measure ½ cup of plain white vinegar and pour it into the tub.

Shake out the curtain when the cycle ends and check the back for leftover mold. Make a paste of baking soda and water, rub it into any remaining mold and repeat the first two steps. Hang the fabric curtain in your shower to dry or in the sun, if possible. Iron it, if necessary, when the fabric is completely dry.

Durable White Or Light

Product: Liquid Chlorine Bleach

Liquid chlorine bleach what most people think of when they think bleach is an excellent mold eliminator, but it has some drawbacks. It can be quite harsh, and isnt recommended for delicate fabrics. Bleach should not be used on wool, spandex or silk, either.

Because it also may dull color in fabrics, test any non-white garment for colorfastness before using liquid chlorine bleach. How? Clorox recommends what it calls the Bleachability Test. Mix two teaspoons bleach in 1/4 cup water, apply a drop of the solution on an inconspicuous spot, wait one minute, blot with a towel, and see if color loss has occurred.

Remove The Mold With Brush Broom & Vacuum

Use a brush to remove any obvious mold from the couch or fabric upholstery. For larger pieces of upholstery, you could also try using a small broom. Once the brush has cleaned the obvious areas, it is time to vacuum. Use the upholstery attachment of your vacuum and clean the fabric as thoroughly as possible.

Once finished, get rid of the vacuum bag used for cleaning the upholstery. If you use a bagless vacuum, spray the inside with a mold-killing cleaner, like alcohol or vinegar, and wipe it down with a soft cloth. Let the vacuum container dry well before using again.

Cleaning With Baking Soda

If you still see any black, pink, green or brown coloring after following the above steps using an anti mold solution, you could try using baking soda. Simply make a paste using equal parts of baking soda and water. Using gloves, rub this paste onto any remaining moldy areas to remove them. Scrub clean and rinse. Repeat if necessary.

Keep in mind that in order to keep the black substance from returning, it is crucial to find the source of the moisture. Only by cutting down on the moisture, will you be able to control it. Otherwise, it will continue to return time and time again.
