Cleaning Mold: How to Remove Mold From Shower Wall Grout

Here is the area below the shower bar. I used the chemist paste, scrubbed it, then did a second treatment. After that, I just followed up with the DIY Lysol spray. If there is a little baking soda residue left, that is okay! It will rinse off when someone takes a shower.

Im sorry the angles arent the exact same . It can be challenging to do blog post experiments and take pictures with my cute little assistant helping me :). But she makes everything more fun, so I am thankful for her help.

Tips For Preventing Mold Growth

Reduce the risk of future mold growth with a few simple steps. First, use a bathroom fan when showering or taking a bath.

If the bathroom does not have a ventilation fan, consider installing one. The fan helps draw warm, humid air out of the bathroom, lowering the humidity. As mold spores thrive in dank, humid conditions, a lower humidity level helps prevent future growth.

Installing a fan may not be an option for everyone. Alternatives include opening the bathroom window or placing a box fan outside the bathroom door.

Besides higher humidity levels, bathrooms are also more prone to mold infestations due to the moisture. While you cannot get rid of water in the bathroom, you can clean up puddles andsplashes from the shower or sink.

After taking a shower or bath, dry up wet spots with a towel or cleaning cloth. You do not need to wipe everything down.

Spending just a minute or two eliminating moisture helps protect the bathroom from the mold.

Mold also likes to grow around shower drains and sink drains. The drains contain cellulose, the substance that encourages mold growth.

Make sure that you keep the drains clear at all times. Clean out the hair to keep the water draining properly, reducing the buildup of soap scum around the drain.

How To Prevent Mold Growth In The Future

For concrete, the best way to prevent future mold growth is to seal the concrete. After the concrete has dried for several days, apply an acrylic sealer specifically designed for exterior use. Choose a low-solids solvent-based sealer to allow for better breathability.

For tile and grout, youll want to remove as much of the moisture as possible and keep the area sanitized:

  • Use a squeegee to quickly remove standing water in the floor of your shower.
  • Keep a separate towel and quickly wipe down the shower walls after each shower, or to wipe down grout and tiles around the sink in your kitchen and bathroom after theyve gotten wet.
  • Run a properly ventilated bathroom fan during and for one hour after each shower or bath.
  • After thoroughly cleaning your grout, using the above instructions, apply a proper grout sealer. This will make the grout much less porous and less likely to hold moisture.
  • Keep a spray bottle with either white vinegar and water or tea tree oil and water in your bathroom. After each shower, and after youve wiped down the tiles, spray the area to sanitize and prevent mold growth.

Best Products For Cleaning Mold On Shower & Bathroom Grout

There are countless ways to clean the grout in your shower and bathroom. The method you use will depend largely on personal preference as well as the severity of the mold growing on your grout. In some cases, you may not need anything other than an old toothbrush and soap. There are, however, several other products that you can use to clean your grout.

Most of these methods work best when applied with an old toothbrush or a small cleaning tool with stiff bristles. This will allow you to truly scrub the mold from the surface of the grout.

    Vinegar And Baking Soda

Many of you probably consider vinegar and baking soda an indefatigable team. That may be true for other cleaning jobs. However, you may want to use it as a back-up or finishing touch for this project.

Despite its reputation as a natural fungicide, vinegar came up short against two typical strains of household molds. It had little to no effect at inhibiting or stopping growth .

    How to Use It:

    • Add half a cup of baking soda into one cup of vinegar.

How To Remove Mold From Grout Naturally

Many sources advise using baking soda and vinegar as a natural agent to remove mold from the shower grout. I have decided to test this advice out, and the results were unexpected.

    Optimum pH

The primary reason why baking soda and vinegar works well in combating mold lies in their pH. The mold usually grows in pH 3 7 . If you have black mold in shower grout, the chances are that you are dealing with the Stachybotrys Chartarum. Its optimal pH for growth is 5.6-6.0 . Because of that, to get rid of the mold and keep it away, it helps to use ingredients that change the pH of the infested area, creating a hostile environment for the mold.

    Ingredient
    6.0

I know that using baking soda and vinegar is a widely spread tip however, I have seen various alternatives of how to use those ingredients, e.g.:

Baking Soda + Water Baking Soda + 3% Hydrogen Peroxide Baking Soda + White Vinegar Baking Soda + White Vinegar + 3% Hydrogen Peroxide Vinegar

But what is the best option? I have tested all the combinations mentioned above, leaving them to sit in the grout for about 20-30 minutes. First, I have started with 30 minutes, but then I have shortened it to 20 minutes, and the results seemed similar. The findings were quite surprising.

Also, vinegar shouldnt be used on, e.g., natural stone, so if you choose to use it, make sure that your tiles are suitable for acid cleaning agents.

Spring cleaning starts with a deep clean your shower and bathtub.

Next time youre deep cleaning your bathroom tiles, pull this recipe from your memory bank:

Start by creating a paste-like mixture using one part hydrogen peroxide and two parts of an oxygenated powder product, such as OxiClean or generic washing soda. The thick combination of these powerful ingredients will adhere to the grout lines in your shower without dripping away and spot-treat areas affected by mildew and mold. Its not too harsh to use as a defense against spores, either, so even if the grout doesnt look dirty, consider applying it as an effective cleanser that will aid in preventing mold from blossoming. If you look at ingredients in many of the heavy-duty mold abatement products, youll spot that hydrogen peroxide is a common ingredient, so its no surprise that this at-home solution works really, really well.

Black Mold In Shower Health Risks

Thankfully, due to the way bathrooms and showers are constructed today, the black mold you see in your shower is less likely to be the really bad stuff the toxic mold or deadly mold known as Stachybotrys chartarum. This is because your shower areas and surfaces dont have cellulose which is required for the really bad type of mold to grow. Tile, ceramics, and cement-fiber backer board all make Stachybotrys less likely to grow.

But, it doesnt mean the black mold you see in your shower issafe for you either!

You can request some laboratory testing for it, but it isnt really that necessary and it can be very expensive.

Many people experience no physical symptoms from being exposed to black mold in showers, but those who have asthma, weakened immune systems, or sensitivities or allergies to mold can experience some physical symptoms from the exposure. These include things like:

Even if you dont show symptoms now, repeated and prolonged exposure can lead to a mold sensitivity over time and affect your health.

For many people though, simply the sight of mold in their shower makes them annoyed! It isnt pretty to see and it isnt healthy.

Anytime you encounter a mold growing in your home, it is best practice to just get rid of it as soon as possible.

Just be aware that mold damages what it grows on, so the sooner you attack the mold the better!

So lets get rid of it!

How To Remove Black Mold In Shower Drain

Shower drains contain cellulose materials via soap scum, body hairs, and oils and lots of moisture so they can be a breeding ground for black mold growth!

Its important to keep drains open and clear of cellulose materials. Treat the drain with vinegar and/or baking soda and water solution periodically to keep it clean and prevent mold spores from developing.

You can then follow the tutorial found on this page for a good method of removing black mold from a shower drain, or you can try this simpler method.

    What Causes Mold In Showers

If youre the type who prides yourself on a meticulously maintained home, you might blame yourself for the organic invader. You shouldnt. The fact is, most bathrooms are hospitable environments for mold growth .

You see, mold isnt a type of bacteria its a type of fungus. Specific fungi produce mold spores that travel in air. These spores settle and grow in areas that have everything they need to thrive.

All mold spores need to survive is a food source, moisture and appropriate temperatures. Unfortunately, the ideal temperature range for mold is pretty broad. This means you cant freeze or heat it to death easily .

As for food, were not talking about the same things we eat. Some species can consume wood, paper, soap residue and even oil residue from your skin to grow .

Now that you know the fundamentals of mold, you can probably hazard a guess at why your shower is playing host. Here are the possible reasons:

What Causes Mold In The Shower

How To Clean Black Mold Out Of Tile Grout ...

Moisture and humidity are the two main causes of mold growth. Unfortunately, bathrooms are constantly moist. The water from the sink, toilet, and shower increases the risk of mold growth.

Taking a hot shower raises the humidity in the room. The increased humidity also encourages the development of mold spores.

Mold tends to grow in the areas that remain moist, such as:

    • Shower curtains
    • Corners and crevasses
    • Areas around fixtures and drains

Caulk and grout are also prone to mold growth. Caulk has a rubbery texture that is difficult to wipe clean while grout is porous, allowing mold spores to grow below the surface.

Natural Remedies For Dealing With Mold In The Shower

For decades, homeowners used bleach for cleaning the bathroom and disinfecting surfaces.

Using bleach may remove mold stains from non-porous materials such as porcelain tubs, showers, and toilets but does not help remove mold on grout or wood.

Bleach is also ineffective for killing mold, bacteria, and fungus. It neutralizes some harmful particles and helps remove stains but does not truly kill the mold.

Luckily, there are alternative solutions. You can make powerful cleaning agents that work on almost any surface, including:

    • Tubs and shower surrounds
    • Metal fixtures
    • Walls and ceilings

While the cleaning solution that you mix should work on everything, the way that you apply the mixture depends on the type of surface. You can wipe non-porous surfaces clean but may need a brush for scrubbing mold from grout and wood.

First, you need to create a cleaning mixture. These options require ingredients that you already likely have in the bathroom or kitchen, including vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, tea tree oil, and baking soda.

These are just a few of the home remedies for getting rid of mold but they are among the most effective.

    Baking Soda Plus Hydrogen Peroxide

Apply a thick baking soda paste to the area affected by mold. Spray or carefully pour hydrogen peroxide over the baking soda paste so it begins to fizz, which will help loosen the mold further. Scrub the fizzing paste using a stiff bristle brush, then rinse the paste and mold away with water. Repeat as needed.

Tip: If there’s mold on the caulk that seals around your tub, faucet, sink or toilet, the safest thing to do is remove the caulking. Sterilize the area with bleach or distilled white vinegar and dry it thoroughly before replacing the caulk. Opt for a mildew-resistant caulk to inhibit the growth of future mold. Some mold problems can’t be tackled with home remedies or commercial cleaners found at your local store. If you’re facing stubborn grout mold or too much mold to handle alone, call the pros at ServiceMaster Clean for complete mold removal from any area.

Where Does Mold Grow In My Shower

    • Mold can grow in the grout. That is one of its favorite places.
    • It can grow inside the window frame if your window is IN the shower like mine is.
    • It can grow around the drain and on the drain plug.
    • Mold can grow on the shower caulking.
    • It can grow in the door tracks if you have doors.
    • Mold can grow under shampoo bottles, bars of soap, shaving cream bottles, etc
    • While not technically a part of the shower, mold can grow on a shower curtain.

Mold can also grow behind shower tiles and on the wall but this is due to a leak behind the shower and not from water in the shower typically. The exception is if your grout is old and cracking. Then water can seep behind the shower tiles allowing mold to grow.
