If the mold is ONLY the cosmetic black mold that we describe
at BLACK COSMETIC MOLD then it really is only cosmetic and could be left in place.
There are two difficulties with this:
- First you may have trouble recognizing the cosmetic mold I describe in that article, though sometimes the growth patterns make it clear. To address this you could spend roughly $50. to send a representative tape sample of the mold to a mold test lab for confirmation.
- Second, while the black mold I describe is indeed harmless on framing lumber and virtually always came in on the lumber from the lumber yard, also one wants toWatch out: in some cases, particularly on lumber that has been wet, or on treated lumber, my own field and lab tests have found Aspergillus sp. and Penicillium sp. growing among the harmless black mold.
So we might want to clean the lumber.

If you notice mold of any kind, you need to ask yourself what gets rid of mold. There are numerous homemade cleaning solutions you can use to kill the black mold some may work better than others. The key to cleaning black mold is to pick one cleaner and stick with it.
Mixing cleaners, such as bleach and ammonia, can cause adverse chemical reactions. Never use bleach or hydrogen peroxide when removing mold from upholstery.
- 1 cup bleach mixed with one gallon of water
- 1 teaspoon tea tree oil and 1 cup of water
- 2 parts water mixed with 1 part hydrogen peroxide
- 1 cup Borax mixed in one gallon of water
- Pure distilled vinegar
Select your homemade cleaner and apply it to the black mold. Allow the soap to soak for about 15 minutes. This allows the cleaner to reach and kill the roots and takes care of removing black mold to prevent it from coming back.
Scrub porous surfaces with a bristled scrub brush to work the detergent in. Rinse the area with clean water and check to see if all mold is gone.
If mold is still present, repeat the cleaning process. If mold is gone, dry area with a towel or squeegee to remove all excess moisture.

The Difference Between Mildew And Mold
The most common type of mold found in homes is mildew. Mildew is a surface mold that grows in warm, damp places like basements, laundry rooms, and shady porches. Mildew begins as a gray or white powdery colony and eventually turns black or brown. To test whether the wood is covered with mildew or just dirt, dab the stain with a cotton swab dipped in household chlorine bleach. If the stain lightens or disappears after two or three minutes, it’s mildew. If not, it’s probably just dirt.
Mildew can discolor and slowly harm wood surfaces. But there are much more dangerous molds that can damage the structure of your home. If a fuzzy or slimy black or green mold is visible and the drywall or wood underneath is soft or crumbles, there is irreversible rot. The damaged surfaces must be removed immediately.
