How To Remove Mold From Bathroom Tiles

What Is Mould And Why Is It In Your Home

Cleaning Tile : How to Remove Mold From Shower Tile

Mould is a type of fungi and can grow on a range of surfaces both indoors and outdoors. Its a naturally occurring organism. Reproducing by making spores, mould prefers damp and poorly ventilated areas where it has easy access to water, which is its main food source.

Mould in the home can be caused by:

  • Poor ventilation

Why Do I Have Mold In My Shower

Its very common for mold to be found in the shower. There is lots of water and humidity in the bathroom which mold just adores.

Frequently running water in the shower creates wet surfaces and puddles of water. If you dont dry this moisture out quickly it can easily lead to mold growth.

On top of this, when the water in the bathroom does dry out it evaporates into the air and increases the humidity. Steam from the shower or a hot bath also makes the bathroom more humid. Since bathrooms are often not well ventilated the humidity tends to hang around and wet surfaces take a long time to dry out. Enter mold.

Another reason mold grows in theshower is because grime from body oils and soap scum which is washed off andonto the shower or tub create a food source for mold to feed on.

Basically, if mold were to have achoice vacation destination it would be the shower. Soooo inviting.

Is Bathroom Mold Dangerous

Fungus spores quickly enter the air, causing health problems for all residents. The lungs are the first to suffer.

If the foci of mold are small, then at the first stage of contact with its spores, a person may feel:

  • general malaise

If people are forced to live in a building heavily infected with mold, the complications will be very serious.

The fungus can cause allergies, such as persistent rhinitis or dermatitis. Air spores can lead to asthma and even cancer.

How To Prevent Mold In Bathroom

Fighting fungus in the bathroom is much more difficult than preventing it from happening. To keep your bathroom free from mold, follow these tips:

  • Monitor the humidity in the room. Inspect the condition of the pipes and plumbing for leaks. Pipes on which condensation appears should be insulated with an insulating tube or other material designed for this purpose. The air can be made drier by hanging a large heated towel rail in the bathroom or by installing a warm floor.
  • Provide good ventilation. Check how the hood works.
  • Make sure that no cracks appear on the walls and ceiling.
  • Black Mold In The Shower Method And Product : Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Another product you can try is a regular toiler bowl cleaner. I have had great success using that as well. Use it the exact same way as method 2, in conjunction with a paper towel.

But instead of soaking it, just pour the toiler bowl cleaner right on the spot, and then add the paper towel to kind of keep it in place.

There you go, three methods and products that you can try to clean that black mold in the shower or bathroom or even kitchen tile.

    Happy cleaning!

NOTE: For extremely tough moldy spots you may need to use a combination of all three of these methods and products. Start with the cheaper methods first, like bleach and toilet bowl cleaner. Again the gel works amazingly on grout on tiled walls.

    What Didnt Remove Mold

When we first moved to our current house, I did a little research and experimented with a number of methods touted to remove mold from shower caulk. Im sure there are even more techniques than the ones listed below, but heres what did not work for me:

    • Saturating the affected area with straight ammonia. This may be incredibly effective, but personally, I detest the smell too much to even try. And since I often use bleach when cleaning I figured it was better just to stay away from this one completely since combining bleach and ammonia produces toxic gas.
    • Spraying with vinegar. This method proved completely worthless for my situation, although I believe it has some merit as a mold preventative. I do love vinegar for glass cleaning though! Take a look at this DIY cleaner I use.
    • Making a baking soda paste with water. I found this only minimally effective on tough mold. Baking soda is a great natural cleaner, though, and the gentle abrasiveness was good for cleaning the tile and some mildewy spots.
    • Combining baking soda and vinegar. Lets talk about this for a minute because I see this combination recommended all the time online. Baking soda and vinegar cancel each other out. This is just basic chemistry, yall. Combining baking soda and vinegar produces carbon dioxide and salty water .

    Ways To Prevent Shower Mold

How to remove mould from the bathroom tiles using natural products
  • Practice good ventilation. Open the bathroom window when showering. Turn on the exhaust fan when showering and leave it on for 30 minutes afterwards. Keep the bathroom door open when showering if possible.
  • Shower drains contain biofilm and cellulose materials such as soap scum, body hairs, and oils and lots of moisture so they can be a breeding ground for black mold. It is important to keep drains open and clear of cellulose materials. Remove any hair after showering and pour a little vinegar down the drain weekly to keep the drain clean and prevent mold spores from developing.
  • After showering wipe down the entire shower including all your shampoo and soap bottle.
  • Once a week spray the shower with EC3 Mold Solution Spray or Remedy Mold Treatment Spray to kill any new mold spores that may be trying to root.
  • Clean your shower from top to bottom every 14 days at a minimum. Weekly is better but no one has time for that! So shoot for every two weeks.
  • If possible, DO NOT USE one of those suction cup non-slip mats in the shower. Those are a mold magnet.
  • Treat your shower with Superstratum Mold and Mildew Protectant every 6 months to prevent mold growth. You can read how and why Superstratum works here.

What Are The Health Risks Of Black Mould

According to the NHS, mould can cause various health problems, the most likely being breathing problems. These would include infections, allergies or asthma attacks.

Health risks associated with mould include allergic reactions, such as sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes and skin rash. This is especially true if you touch or inhale any spores, which can cause an asthma attack.

Therefore, those most likely to be affected are children, the elderly and anyone with existing skin problems and respiratory issues.

According to Asthma UK, 42% of respondents to their 2019 annual survey said mould can trigger their asthma. They advise that if you experience cold-like symptoms in warm, damp environments, you could be allergic to mould.

Furthermore, the World Health Organisation believes that many of the 300 million cases of asthma cases among children have originated or been worsened by mould exposure.

    Preventing Condensation On The Toilet

In all three cases described above, condensation is the primary cause of mold growth. Thus, prevention must hinge upon preventing or lowering the condensation. If you have a working bathroom fan already installed, the solution is simple. Run the fan. If necessary, a push button timer with 20, 40, 60 minute increments can help ensure proper ventilation occurs. Bathroom fans often lack sufficient power. Youll know this if youre still seeing condensation even when running the fan for 60 minutes after each shower usage. Time for an upgrade.

If your bathroom does not have a fan currently installed, your options are much more limited. Opening the window can help, but this isnt comfortable in January. And realistically, most people wont keep the window open long enough to achieve proper ventilation rates.
