How To Remove Mold Smell From Clothes

Add A Laundry Booster Like Borax To Erase Musty Smell

How to Easily Remove Mildew Smells From a Shirt : Removing Smells From Clothes

Borax is another popular cleaning product that offers a simple alternative for how to remove musty smell from clothes. Like vinegar and baking soda, Borax kills mold without emitting harsh chemicals or fumes. Use laundry detergent with Borax already in it or add it to your clothes separately. Either option will work.

  • 1 cup of hot water

Mix the Borax with hot water, completely dissolving the solution before adding it to the laundry. Like previous options, add the solution to your clothes during the rinse cycle. If you use a laundry detergent with Borax already in it, wash the clothes the same way you would regularly clean them.

Spray With White Vinegar

First, test the vinegar on an inconspicuous area to make sure the garment will not be stained or damaged. As with most of the options on this list, vinegar is a liquid, so keep away from fabric easily damaged by moisture.

Once you know its safe, spray a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water onto the clothing and allow it to air dry. Allow at least a day between spraying and wearing to make sure the apparel is completely dry.

Use The Right Amount Of Detergent

Believe it or not, using more detergent than recommended does NOT help get odor out of clothes.

In fact, excess detergent can leave behind dulling residue because it doesnt all get washed off your clothing.

Prevent and Remove Mildew Smell from Clothes

Your clothes go through a lot. Whatever activity you do, your clothes are right there with you, soaking up the sweat and absorbing muddy water on a country hike. Or taking in the traffic fumes from a day in the city.

The dirt and grime can cause problems. If you dont wash the garments as soon as possible, bacteria can start to build up. Its the bacteria that can create the pungent aroma, particularly in your washing basket. A pile of dirty washing is an ideal environment for bacteria and germs. Theyll multiply in no time.

Add a few damp towels from your shower or some soggy swimwear from your last trip to the pool, and you have the perfect petri dish for mold. Another lover of all things dirty and wet, mold can permeate the fibers in clothing and create an odor of lingering mustiness that seems to be impervious to washing.

Todays washing detergents are designed to care for modern fabrics, whether they are natural or synthetic. But why do they seem to be ineffective at removing the smell of must? Lets take a look at some of the reasons musty smells survive the wash.

How Can You Prevent Mildew Smells In Clothes

The most obvious way to prevent musty smells from attacking your clothes is to stay on top of your laundry. Don’t allow piles of dirty, sweaty clothes and damp towels to accumulate in the hamper. Also, be sure to remove your clothes from the washing machine as soon as it’s finished running.

Zinna advises leaving the door of your washing machine open a tiny crack to allow it a chance to dry out. She also recommends wiping down the gasket after each use to make sure standing water doesn’t accumulate.

It’s also a good idea to clean your stinky washing machine once a month. Check the manufacturer’s directions for your washing machine since many units have cleaning cycles. If your machine doesn’t have such a cycle, she says to manually wipe the inner rubber seal by hand with soapy water. She also recommends removing the dispenser tray and rinsing it clean with hot water. Lastly, she adds that products like Tide Washing Machine Cleaner can be used periodically to make sure the interior of your washing machine is squeaky clean.

Dont Let It Happen Again

How to remove mildew from clothes

To prevent mold from growing on your clothing, do not leave them in damp piles for any length of time. This means you should wash all towels and wet items immediately to prevent mold from growing. Additionally, you should not leave your clothes in the washing machine. Instead, place them in the dryer immediately, or hang them up to dry as soon as they are done washing. If you dont have time to wash your wet laundry immediately, hang all wet or sweaty items up somewhere that will allow them to thoroughly dry as soon as possible to prevent mold growth. Lastly, wet clothing adds humidity to the air, which can cause mold growth not only on the clothes, but other places in your home as well.

Mold on clothes is a common problem that the Moldbusters team members see in NYC homes. Its direcltly related to the level of humidity in an appartment, which is why they always advise their clients to dry or wash the wet clothes immediately, and to pay attention to the humidity levels and to the ventilation in their closets.

Mildew, moldy smelling towels are the WORST! If you are anything like me, youve thrown a load of laundry in and got busy and forgot all about tossing it in the dryer. If you have hard water to deal with, it can make it even worse. Even when Ive been really good about not letting wet laundry sit in the washer, I still end up with stinky washcloths in the kitchen. Find The Source Of The Musty Smell:

As we have seen, the most common reason for a musty smell in your home is the presence of mold or mildew. And because the microbial volatile organic compounds emitted from mold and mildew have a low odor threshold, a musty smell does not necessarily mean that there is a lot of it. Before you try to cover up the odor, take some time to look around for patches of mildew or mold. Some places you may want to check for mold around your home include:

Your bathrooms Moist and warm, bathrooms are like heaven to mold spores. You will want to check the most obvious places like the tiles in the shower but do not forget to check under the sink, around the toilet, and in the walls. The kitchen There are a lot of places in the kitchen for mold to hide out, so you will want to check thoroughly. Look inside of, underneath, and around your refrigerator, underneath your sink, and inside your microwave and stove. Oh, and do not forget to check your trash can that is another dark place mold cannot resist.

In the bedrooms True, your bedroom may not seem like a great place for mold to grow but its very possible. To keep your room smelling fresh, you will want to check for mold on your mattress, your bedroom windows and windowsills, and in any potted plants you have.
