Having wiped the roof with a mild detergent I was left with black stains on the plywood. I would like to know if it would be ok to put a wood preservative on it despite the stains – don’t want it to come back.

But if you do not find and fix the cause of condensation I’d still expect future trouble. You may find stains or mold appearing on other wood or mold-friendly surfaces in the same area if indoor moisture levels are high, or if there is building insulation present that may become mold contaminated.
