Does Kilz Paint Kill Mold

How Does Mold Grow

How To Apply Zinsser Mold Killing Primer

Mold needs three things to grow and reproduce in your home.

First it needs oxygen, which there isnt much we can do about.

Second, it needs organic matter to feed off of such as wood, paint, fabric, foods and other materials.

Last, mold needs moisture. Moisture is the key to mold growth in your home. We cannot cut out oxygen or organic materials in our homes, but we can control the moisture found in our homes.

Mold And Kilz Question

A Kilz type product was used over some wood with black stains which we now realize may have been mold. What should we do now? Can we treat the KIlz painted wood with a mold killer now?

  • 1I ask because latex is mildly porous – you can bleach right through it. If it’s oil based, you may have to scrape or sand a little first, then bleach.

I would be sure and get rid of the source of the mold as the kilz did not stop it. I am not a handy person, but, for mold I would consider a thorough job is essential to the existing mold not just painting with kilz as there are future unforseen health concerns.

If it was oil-based Kilz, you’ll need to remove it. Rather than the previously suggested sanding, I’d recommend applying turpentine or mineral spirits and scrubbing with a disposable scotchbrite pad. Sanding has a greater risk of spreading mold spores, not to mention being more effort.

Bleach is ineffective at killing mold on porous surfaces such as unfinished wood. Ditto most “mold killers” you’ll find down the cleaning aisle at most stores – most specify this in the instructions, some you have to check the website to find out. Products for porous surfaces exist, but can be hard to find and identify. Foster’s 40-80 is the only one I know of that advertises that it kills mold on porous surfaces, but I’ve read that plain old white vinegar does the job, too .

Safety For Working With Mold

If you have found mold in your home and you plan on remedying the issue yourself, you need to make sure to take the appropriate precautions.

Make sure to wear gloves, a protective suit, a respirator and use a HEPA filter vacuum to make sure mold spores dont escape into your home.

Disturbing mold without a plan for protecting yourself and keeping the spores contained can cause health problems and even help the spread of new mold.

Does Kilz Paint Kill Mold (Mold Removal and Prevention Guide)

You wouldnt paint a dirty wall, would you? In the same way, you want to remove the now-dead mold.

It is recommended to continue wearing your mask for this part. Once the mold killer has time to dry, it is time to scrape, sand, and remove the mold. Some people try to use vacuums to remove the sanded dust, but this risks further disseminating the fungus spores into the air.

A rag that has been dampened with bleach water or Windex seems to work well for removing small dust particles and cleaning the area once you have fully sanded and scraped the area.

Once the area has been cleaned, it is time to prime the surface. This is where I like to use Kilz or another mold inhibiting product. These primers are not mold-killers, but they do discourage the recurrence of the mold.

If you are painting a deck, use a mold-resistant primer to help provide an added barrier against future mold problems.

Keeping Further Mold Outbreaks At Bay

Once the paint is applied to the wall and is properly dried off there isnt much more you are supposed to do. However, if preventing the future development of mold is a concern, then there are a lot of different actions you can and should consider.

Generally speaking, you need to make sure that the conditions in the room are as unfriendly towards mold as possible. They need to be dry and properly ventilated and you need to remove any form of condensation. If the room is used regularly, then keeping a warm and dry temperature is a good thing to do against the future development of mold, but there are situations when even that isnt enough.

If the mold is extra stubborn and / or the wall it is spreading on is just too susceptive to mold, you might need the extra help of a dehumidifier. Some walls and buildings just cant not develop mold because of their structure and the outside weather. A good dehumidifier can help immensely in situations such as these. A lot of people get put off by the idea of a dehumidifier because they imagine a huge, industrial grade, whole home machine that connects to the HVAC. And while there are, of course, such dehumidifiers, if the problem is localized in one room or your place isnt that big, a small portable dehumidifier can work wonders as well.

Aside from that, you should just keep the levels of moisture and humidity in the room within an acceptable region and routinely check for even the smallest signs of a new mold infestation.

    The Best Mold Killing Primer

When it comes to mold killing primers, there arent many products on the market that claim to actually kill mold. As far as wide spread availability, there is only one.

Zinsser Mold Killing Primer is the only product on the market that claims it not only prevents future mold growth but actively kills existing mold.

However there are a few notes to consider before slapping it all over active mold.

First, Zinsser does say that their mold killing primer is meant to be applied on smooth surfaces. If the surface is porous, the primer may not reach the mold in the pores and thus not kill it and allow for future growth.

Other products on the market that claim to kill mold are not available at your local hardware store, and thus dont need to be mentioned here.

Mold Is Not Dirt Or A Stain

This is something else that a lot of people forget. Mold is an actual microorganism that grows on your walls and other surfaces. It is a fungus and it doesnt really mind paint. In fact, mold eats through painted surfaces without a problem. Thats why mold causes discoloration its the result of the chemical reactions between the mold and the painted surface.

Which Is Better Kilz Or Zinsser

    Does KILZ Kill Mold

Zinsser offers more consistent quality across its range of mold and mildew-resistant paint primers than KILZ. There are some excellent products from the KILZ ranges of paint primers, but when compared side by side with Zinsser products, they are not as effective.

The Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 paint primer offers excellent coverage and doesnt allow colors of mold underneath the paint to bleed through. It can also be used on a wide variety of surfaces including wood, drywall, and even masonry and dries within 30 minutes of applying it.

    What Makes It So Dangerous

What makes mold so dangerous is the mold spores it releases in order to reproduce. The spores become airborne, especially when disturbed by rubbing or cleaning, and they can be breathed into the lungs. When these spores are inhaled, serious lung infections may occur. Black mold spores are especially dangerous and they can cause lasting health conditions.

Furthermore, mold can cause skin and eye irritations. It can worsen or even cause the symptoms of asthma and allergies. It is therefore important that mold is eradicated from the home before it could take a hold on your health. It is also imperative that a mask is worn when working with mold.

    The Best Mold Resistant Paints

For mold resistant paints, you have a much larger selection than with mold killing primers!

This is because they are high quality, readily available and not only state a great warranty, but my experience with their warranty is better than any other paint brand. So once again, Behr tops my list.

Kilz is a company that makes paint primers designed to prevent black mold and other types of mold, mildew, stains or odor in your property. This is a problem best suited to the professionals, but if you must do it yourself the number one priority is the safety of you and those around you. This can be a very hazardous task, if you do not take every precaution to contain and remove the spores properly.

The first thing you’ll have to think about is containment, you don’t want to spread the mold spores while you clean the area. You’ll want to seal off the area with plastic sheeting, making sure all seams are properly sealed.

Once the area is sealed off, you’ll need the appropriate clothing.

    Does Borax Kill Mold

Most, but not all types of mold preferan environment where the pH is somewhere between 3 and 7, which is more on theacidic side . Some molds even like tolive in pH environments below 3.

Remember how I said that borax isquite alkaline with a pH of 9.3? Applying borax to mold creates anenvironment that is not suitable to additional mold growth. In many cases boraxkills mold spores by turning up the pH levels and making their environmentalinhospitable.

Borax wont always kill mold but inmany cases it will.

    Kill And Clean The Mold

The first step is to kill the mold and clean the surface.

This is most commonly done by washing the area with bleach and water mixture.

Mix 3 parts water to 1 part bleach. The bleach mixture will kill the surface mold and help remove the stain color from your walls.

Make sure to wear a respirator and rubber gloves when using bleach as the fumes are toxic and bad for your skin.

Rinse the area with a wet rag to remove the bleach and allow the area to dry 100%. A fan and/or dehumidifier will help significantly.
