How To Get Rid Of White Mold Under House

White Mold On Walls/drywall

Killing Mold in a Crawl Space, Basement or Attic

White mold grows on your walls or drywall in the presence of moisture and low lights that breed its food. It can develop anywhere on your building walls, including the basement, bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, and other poorly ventilated rooms. Surprisingly, you can also find white mold growing on your tiled walls.

You can see visible growth of this mold on your damp painted or wallpapered walls that are peeling. Accompany signs include stale smells, moist cracked paints, and dusty or swollen walls.

White mold growth on your drywall can be dangerous to the health of those with allergy symptoms. Its spores can spread from the walls to humans and cause health risks. So, before it strikes, act fast to strike it first.

S To Prevent Mold In Crawlspaces

Here are some handy tips for preventing mold problems in your crawlspace:

  • Check the foundation walls and make sure there are no cracks where water can enter.
  • Make sure gutters and downspouts channel at least 6 feet away from the house, especiallyduring the rainy season. Otherwise, water can accumulate near the house and eventually find its way inside your crawlspace.
  • Check for adequate ventilation. At a minimum, there should be 1 square foot of ventilation for every 150 square feet of crawl space area. We are big fans of well-ventilated crawl spaces.

Note: Many building professionals advocate closing vents and controlling moisture through other means, arguing that open vents make it difficult to keep crawl spaces warm in winter, and can lead to increase in moisture build up in the summer when hot humid air is brought into the crawl space. These are good points, but it can be challenging to control moisture through other means without the use of vents. In addition, once mold starts to grow, it is going to spread much easier in closed spaces without vents relative to closed areas with vents. The outside fresh air coming from the vents can also help dry out a structure and reduce the concentrations of mold in the air once the outbreak occurs.

What Causes White Mold On Wood

Just like other types of mold, the most important factors are high temperatures, high levels of moisture, and an organic, carbon-rich material to act as a food source for the mold.

This means that places like basements are at a greater risk of white mold growth since they can often be quite damp and warm, especially during the summer months.

Removing Mold From Fabric

If your home has been flooded and mold and bacteria have been left to grow for many days, it may be impossible to salvage fabric items. However, if mildew has developed due to dampness and is caught early, it can easily be removed from most fabrics.

Begin by taking the items outside to brush away as much surface mold as possible and to prevent spreading the mold spores inside your home. If the fabric is washable, use the hottest water recommended on the care label and add a disinfectant. If stains remain, create a solution of oxygen bleach and water and allow the clothes to soak for at least eight hours. Oxygen bleach can be used safely on any washable fabric.

For fabrics that are dry clean only, brush away the mildew outside and then head to a professional cleaner. Identify and point out the stains most fabrics can be successfully restored.

Of Hard Deposits On Inside Of Concrete Blocks It’s Only On The Lower 1

This is a tricky one. If its hard to the touch, its not mold. Its either mortar or efflorescence. The latter will dissolve in water. Typically its powdery, but Ive seen it form hard, crystal like deposits in some cases. The fact you found mold on the backside of the sheet rock points to an ongoing moisture intrusion. This would explain the efflorescence, which occur when moisture moves through masonry. I recommend testing the deposits by submersing them in water. Do not reinstall the sheet rock until youve dealt with the underlying moisture issue.

Tips For Treating Mildew With White Vinegar And Baking Soda

Luckily, treating mildew with some common household items is normally a pretty quick and easy task. If youve noticed mildew in your bathroom, you can typically get rid of it using some white vinegar and baking soda. To do this, fill a spray bottle with white vinegar, spray the areas that are covered with mildew and let the white vinegar sit for a few hours.

Once the vinegar has sat for a couple of hours, use a moist cloth to scrub the mildew off of broad areas and a toothbrush to remove it from hard-to-reach spaces like corners. When youre done, rinse the entire area with water.

If any mildew still remains, make a paste that consists of three-parts baking soda and one-part water. Apply the paste to any remaining mildew and spray the affected areas with more white vinegar. Use a bristled brush to scour the area, and then rinse off any residual paste. If mildew is still present, use more paste and vinegar to treat the affected area again until the mildew is gone.

My House Was Flooded From A Broken Water Pipe Resulting From A Freeze Is The White Snow Like Substance On Concrete Mold Or The Beginning Of Mold And I’ve Been Putting Rubber Mats On The Floor So That I Don’t Have To Walk On The Huge Amounts Of Dust From Replacing Drywall Please Tell Me How I Should Be Handling This Situation Ive Also Been Rnning Fans Thinking I Was Drying Out The Surface Of Concrete But I Turned Off The Fans After Reading The Fema Pamphlet

White growth on concrete is nearly always efflorescence, not mold growth. You can verify this by spraying a bit of water on the suspected growth. If its efflorescence, it will disappear as the crystals are dissolved by the water. If its mold, it will flatten, but remain visible.

I recommend removing the rubber mats for now. The impervious nature of the mats will prevent the concrete from releasing the moisture. After a week or so, put a couple of mats back down. Peel them back a few days later and look for signs of moisture on the underside of the rubber. If you see moisture, pull them off and allow the concrete more time to dry.

Unfortunately, this is fairly common in new construction. There are a couple of possible causes. The subfloor and joists often become saturated by rain before the roof is installed. Over the subsequent weeks, mold growth forms before the building materials can dry out. Another common cause is exposed soil in the crawl space. Most builders wait until the very end to install the vapor barrier. If the soil beneath the home is damp, this can create high humidity conditions in the crawl space. Over time this will cause mold growth on the joists.

Previous incomplete removal of white mold may also cause some growth to re-emerge on your wood paneling.

While the mold probably wont cause too much physical damage since its just paneling, it can cause unsightly cosmetic damage that would require covering or replacing.

It can also cause a very unpleasant, musty smell to permeate your whole home.

So, how should you tackle it?

    • Either vinegar or baking soda should work just fine, though we would recommend baking soda over vinegar since its a bit milder some wood paneling can be a bit too delicate to use strong chemicals on it.
    • After spraying down and scrubbing the affected area, make sure to thoroughly dry it, as any remaining moisture may seep underneath the paneling and cause further damage or detach the paneling from the surface underneath it.
    • You may want to contact a professional if the affected area is quite large, or if youre worried about potentially damaging your wood paneling in the process of removing the white mold.

How can you prevent the white mold from returning?

    • Make sure the room where the infestation happened doesnt get too hot or humid invest in some dehumidifiers and keep the windows open as often as possible.
