How Do I Remove Mildew From A Tent

Similar to this question, but mildew tends to be very resistant to removal. I sadly failed to keep my tent dry enough, and now it has a couple of mildew spots. They’re not bad, but I would rather not replace my entire tent.

What’s the best way to remove mildew from a tent?

The best I’ve found for this sort of thing is normal household bleach – you can dilute it to start with and try it on a small area if you’re scared of wrecking the tent. In many cases, working diluted bleach into the fabric is enough and I’ve personally never had any issues with it removing the waterproof coating.

Kill it: Spray it with distilled white vinegar. Let dry.

Clean it: Scrub it lightly with a soft brush using a mixture of salt, lemon, and hot water. Avoid using detergent soaps or bleach which is harsh on canvas and tough to rinse out. Let dry.

Retreat it: Spray the clean, dry, canvas with a canvas treatment .

Something else people recommend is things like there dishwasher detergent or clothes detergent. Again these are bad and can cause damage to the waterproofing and fabric as well.

There are two more things that I dont recommend using, which is hot water and a high-power washer. Both of these can ruin your canvas tent and end up costing you money in the long run. As you can see canvas tents do have a few weaknesses when it comes to cleaning them. But if you treat them right, youll have an amazing tent for years to come.

Now that your tent has dried, you need to gather a few household items such as warm water, lemon, and some salt. Some people say hot water, but hot water can also ruin your tents waterproofing as well. You should give this a very light wiping as scrubbing leads to wrecking your waterproofing as well. How To Clean The Tent

If there are still mold spores on the tent, make sure to brush them off so they cant continue to grow. You should do this outdoors, so the mold spores dont get into the air in your house or cause an indoor mold problem.

If only a small portion of the tent is moldy, you should be able to spot treat it without washing the entire tent. Then, dip the portion of the tent into hot water and scrub it with a wash rag or sponge in the affected area.

For tents that have been infested with mold, you may need to soak the entire tent for a longer period of time. In that case, you can fill your bathtub with hot water and whatever cleaning solution you are using.

If you are using a spray-on solution such as Concrobium, read the directions first. You may be required to spray the affected area first and let the solution dry first to kill the mold spores before you wash the tent.

Then let the tent soak for some time. However, dont think that soaking longer is always better. Leaving it overnight or longer could actually cause more damage to the materials.
