How To Get Better From Mold Exposure

What To Tell Your Doctor

Mold sickness – 3 steps to get better

If you have symptoms, and youve been exposed to mold at work, on a trip or at home, you should consult your doctor immediately, Dr. Ibrahim says. Tell your provider all that you can about the mold and the location.

Be sure to mention all symptoms you may have, no matter how trivial they may seem. There are no insignificant symptoms when youre being evaluated for a new problem, Dr. Ibrahim says. Pay close attention to symptoms that are only present or worsen at home or other public areas where mold is common.

How To Detox From Mold

Hello to a verrrrry long over-due post.

Ive missed blogging and writing, but, to say the least, its been a little busy over here.

Two words: Mold illness.

It happened. To me.

Not once. But twice. Which is why things have been quiet lately on the blog and social mediaMy body: fighting for its life to just feel normal and breathe again.

Asthma. Vomiting. Nausea. Shortness of breath. Chest pains. Full body tingling. Migraines. Insulin resistance. Candida and SIBO. IBS. General fatigue.

How To Detox Your Body From The Mold

Actually, your body can handle occasional mold exposure itself initially. But if the condition goes worse and you can notice any of the symptoms above, your respiratory and immune systems are at risk and you have to detox the mold from your body as soon as possible.

Dont panic. Treating mold-related issues are not complicated. There are numerous ways which can detox your body from mold exposure quickly, safely, and even naturally.

Bad Gut=perfect Storm For Mold Illness

As a kid, I was your classic case of a gut problem kiddo:

  • IBS
  • Strep throat
  • Anxiety

However, like many folks, I was told most of these symptoms were normal and in order to be healthy all I needed to do was take antibiotics, eat more Fiber One cereal and strawberries. Nevertheless, the symptoms continued and gut problems defined my entire childhood, teens and young adult life.

Fast forward to age 10, when anorexia took root , and the brain-gut connection totally dictated my disease, along with an all-out spiritual warfare for my life .

Couple this with the fact that I am also an under-methylator , and my body was brewing the perfect storm for immune upheaval! Since 80% of our immune system is housed in our gut and our liver is responsible for filtering out every single toxin, food and substance we come into contact with, if our gut is unhealthy, our brain is unhealthy , andour detox pathways and mechanisms are backed up and slow, then.mold exposure, toxin exposure and other environmental burdens can wreak havoc on our system.

My own history with anorexia and orthorexia is no different than many other women I have worked with in my practice over the past several years who ALSO have histories of anorexia, bulimia or other eating disorders AND end up getting diagnosed with autoimmune disease, MCAS , mold illness, chronic fatigue and/or Lyme disease in their later years during recovery.

The gut-immune-brain axis is intertwined!

Take Natural Detox Supplements

How to Recover from Toxic Mold Exposure (How Long Does it ...

Natural detox supplements will prove to be just as useful in getting rid of your symptoms as man made medicines, but when you feel better- you can be sure that its because your body is actually healing.

My top three recommendations to heal from mold toxicity are:

  • CGEL: increases the cells natural ability to undergo the natural mechanism of detox
  • BIND: is a powerful binder that sweeps the body and effectively eliminates toxins from the blood
  • CytoDetox: enters the cell membrane and act as a vehicle to getting rid of the toxins as we up-regulate cell function, and prevents reabsorption.

Tell Me The Truth: Is It Bad For My Health To Have Mold In My Home

So, no mold is really good or pleasant to have aroundbut, it may not be as dangerous as you think to have it in your home. Theres not enough scientific proof that mold is toxic for the average person, and you may not even know its in your house, says Dr. Parikh.

Household mold, which may make its home in an old house with water damage, for example, is more problematic for people who have mold allergies, asthma , or are severely immune-compromised.

Theres no reason at all to live in constant fear of mold if you’re an average healthy adult, Dr. Parikh says.

The most common types of fungus that will cause these allergy or asthma attacks or respiratory infections if the immune system has a severe enough reaction are Aspergillus, Alternaria, Penicillium, and Cladosporium, says Dr. Parikh. When people refer to black mold as especially dangerous, its actually a misnomer, because all of the above molds are blackish or dark in color, and one isnt necessarily worse to have in your home than another.

Its possible to develop a mold allergy over time from frequent exposure to mold in your home, Dr. Parikh says, especially if youre predisposed to environmental allergies. In the case of immune-compromised people , the body can develop an infection if the mold enters the lungs or bloodstream.

So its important to pay attention to whats potentially growing in your home, and monitor any symptoms, but theres no reason at all to live in constant fear of mold, Dr. Parikh says.

What Are The Symptoms Of Mold Sickness

If your Total Body Burden is high, or you are genetically predisposed to recycling toxins, regular exposure to mold can cause allergy symptoms, such as:

  • Wheezing/shortness of breath
  • Long standing or frequent sinusitis

And, serious pain and neurological symptoms, such as:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Muscle cramping, aches and pains
  • Persistent nerve pain
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Poor memory, brain fog, difficulty with focus

In some cases, the spores from mold take root and grow in specific parts of the body, such as the lungs and sinuses. This can cause serious respiratory illnesses and infections.

A Single Exposure To Mold Only Causes A Single Reaction

The reality isfor genetically-susceptible people, a single exposure can cause a life-long problem. If you have the wrong HLA gene type, your body simply cannot target and remove biotoxins. A single exposure could cause an indefinite recirculation of these toxins, provoking chronic inflammation from a continuously triggered immune system.

If this is you, even after avoiding exposure for days, weeks, months, years, or even decades, you could suffer from CIRS. Thankfully, recovery is not only possible, its probable. Dr. Shoemaker had developed and applied a systematic protocol, The Shoemaker Protocol, to remove biotoxins from the body and re-regulate the immune response to stop inflammation and reverse chronic symptoms.

It begins with removal from exposure. Exposure must be carefully monitored throughout the entire protocol. If there is a new biotoxin exposure from a water damaged building or other source, you must begin the entire protocol from the start. In many cases, re-exposure causes CIRS patients to get sick more quickly. The sicker quicker phenomenon is backed by evidence showing an increase in certain biomarkers in as little as four hours after re-exposure.

Many CIRS patients are highly sensitive to mold and other biotoxins. The smallest exposure can trigger inflammation and feelings of anxiety, agitation, and danger. Its best to trust your bodys reaction and leave a potentially contaminated building immediately.

How To Detox From Mold: Fast Track

What do mold exposure symptoms look like?

In order to recover from mold illness and stabilize the immune system, there is no getting around detox.

Detox is a buzz word that gets thrown around in the wellness world, and intermittent fasting, celery juice and colonics have become as common in health circles as fried chicken joints, 7-11s and PAWN shops are in sketchier parts of town.

However, not all detox methods or programs are created the same. Nor are all detox methods beneficial .

My own detox protocol from mycotoxin illness includes a compilation of nutrition, supplements, lifestyle hacks and therapies/modalities to assist the body in pulling mold and fungus out of my body, like:

HEALING TAKES TIME

People often ask me: What does mold illness feel like?

In the thick of the illness, it literally felt like I had mold throughout my entire body. In my lungs. In my chest. In my gut. In my brain. In my nasal cavities. Clogged up. And thats exactly what my test results showed: elevated mycotoxins in my body yeast and candida bacterial dysbiosis. Icky.

However, I so believe that, when given the right tools, the body innately wants to heal itself.

Ive found that, as I have begun giving my body the right toolshealing and strength is coming back rather quickly.

I also believe that, everything we go through in life happens for a reason. The Lord allowed this tough, long health journey to happen in my life to teach me lessons that no medical textbook could have taught me.

Inflammation And Cognitive Symptoms

Along with the toxicity element of the exposure, there is also an inflammatory response in the cells. Tissues become swollen, and function is impaired. This ties in with the immune response as well. The immune system becomes activated to mount a defense against a foreign substance and in trying to protect, actually adds to the problem by adding to inflammation. If the mycotoxins continue to barrage the immune system, like if a person is living in a moldy home, the inflammation continues to mount and to cause more and more problems. And, when the body is inflamed, the brain is also inflamed, because it is in constant vigilance mode or fight or flight. It is a turned-on, wired brain, that does not rest and repair, but that is anxious, sleepless, and chronically fatigued. It is no wonder that thinking gets foggy!

You can see how the problem becomes quite complex. In addition to all of this discussion, hormonal systems become secondarily impacted, which we will discuss in future articles.

So now that we know more about WHY brain fog is part of mold illness, what do we do about it?

So What Is Toxic Mold Exposure

Mycotoxicosis /my·co·tox·i·co·sis/ : poisoning caused by exposure to mycotoxins.

Toxic mold exposure is in essence, mycotoxicosis. For reference, a mycotoxin is a toxic secondary metabolite produced by mold. Mycotoxicosis, is used synonymously with mold toxicity, or mold illness and it occurs when a person does not have antibodies to mycotoxins and mycotoxins have accumulated to high levels in their brain and body. While, not all species of mold produce pathogens , several species of fungi are known as pathogenic and produce toxic substances mycotoxins being one of them.

Many of us are exposed to mold daily, however 75% of us are genetically able to fight off the toxicity. So what does that mean for the other 25%? Lets find out.

Mold and Your Genes

So if you have a gene mutations such as MTHFR and HLA which one in four people do your immune system is not able to produce some of the vital antibodies to mycotoxins. This means that at least a quarter of the population has a difficult time fighting off the mycotoxins that are so prevalent in our environment.

Focus On Natural Remedies Vs Man Made Medicines

When healing from mold toxicity, its important to opt for natural remedies instead of man made medicines, because only natural remedies are geared to address the root cause of the problem, without any added side effects. Man made medicines can be great at suppressing symptoms, but these symptoms are your bodys way of communicating with you if you fail to hear the message, you gear up for larger troubles in the long run.

B Types Of Mold In Lungs Diseases

How To Detoxify Your Body From Mold Exposure ...

Mildest health problem causedby mold growing in your lungs is breathing problem. When the mold enters yourrespiratory system, it can cause inflammation to the internal organ evenswollen lungs that can block airways. This condition is a high prevalence forpeople with immune system disorder and trigger asthma, chest pain, persistentcoughing, etc.

When mold in lungs treatment is not treated properly, it can cause asthma, a chronic lung illness that produces extra mucus in your airways. The swelling may block the air passage in your lungs, making it hard to breathe. Mold-related asthma is characterized by symptoms including chest pain and tightness, wheezing, and coughing.

The mold spores ofpneumocystis can easily enter your lung and cause pneumonia, a lunginflammation that comes along with other illness like the flu. When someonecatches pneumonia, it will be hard to breathe, trigger chest pain, headache, fever, chills, excessive sweating and loss of appetite. This disease mostly affectsolder people, but people with a compromised immune system or whore undergoingchemotherapy drugs are also vulnerable.

The most severe case of mold in your lungs infection is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Now, the illness wont build up in one night, but it is highly linked to and particularly persistent in people with asthma or other allergies. When the spores enter the respiratory system, it will block the airways, and more thick mucus is produced.

Indoor Air Sampling Is The Best Method To Test For Mold

The bottom line here is that air sampling gives a very limited picture of indoor air quality and the actual presence of mold. Most often, indoor air samples are taken using a petri dish culture or a machine that collects air for a short period of time in a small space. The problem with these methods is that they do not take into account the varying nature of molds.

While some mold spores are light and remain airborne for long periods of time, others, such as Stachybotrys chartarum are heavy, dense, or sticky and fall more quickly to floors and surfaces. This makes collection from air samples unreliable. While air samples may reveal the presence of one or mold molds, the identified volume of a particular mold may be inaccurate, suggesting safety when levels are actually outside an acceptable range.

The best test, as discussed above, is one of the variations of the Environmental Relative Moldiness Index . An ERMI test uses samples of dust collected from surfaces as well as vacuumed samples. Whats most important with the ERMI test is to send your samples to a certified and well-reviewed lab. I recommend either Mycometrics or Envirobiomics for testing. They cost a bit more than some other well-known labs, but they use high-quality diagnostic tools that increase accuracy, eliminating the need for repeat testing.

Identifying Mold In Your Home

  • Appearance or dark spots or clusters. Look for spots or clustered growths, especially in warm, moist rooms.
  • Musty smell. You may be able to identify mold by a musty smell.
  • Allergies or asthma. If you experience asthma attacks or allergy symptoms in your home, that may also indicate theres mold.
  • Potential causes. Look for causes of mold growth, like a leak, water damage, lack of ventilation, or old food, papers, or wood.

Mold Exposure: The Long And The Short Of It

Most fungal allergy sufferers can withstand small doses of mold. But prolonged exposure increases sensitivity thereby slowing the recovery time. This is why it is so imperative to make sure during your recovery that you are living and working in clean environmental air.

So assuming that your mold exposure is relatively short, the recovery can be fairly quick. People often see results in just days, by following our protocol. Now, if you have had a relatively short exposure to mycotoxins it will likely take several weeks to get relief from your symptoms. As we stated earlier, if the exposure to mold has been prolonged your recovery could take up to a year and involve environmental steps, sinus washes, as well as diet and nutritional supplements. The good news is that our system is scalable so if you are having severe symptoms due to longer term exposure you can add product to speed up the healing process.

The Consequences Of Improper Diagnosis And Treatment

Unfortunately, traditional psychiatry remains the only medical field that rarely looks at the organ it treats, so no one will look at your brain to see if there are signs of toxicity. And most likely no one will even consider that your symptoms might be due to exposure to mold or other toxins. If you visit a healthcare professional with symptoms of depression or memory loss, chances are they will never ask you if you had a water leak at home, if you are a house painter, or if you are a hairdresser.

Because of this, mold toxicity and other types of brain toxicity remain underdiagnosed. The medical community has been slow to acknowledge the association between exposure to mold and other toxins as a cause for psychiatric symptoms. Sadly, when people with undetected exposure to mold or other toxins are misdiagnosed, treatments often dont work. And in some cases, they can make symptoms worse. Without the appropriate treatment and with continued exposure to the toxin, your brain can be subjected to further injury.

This can eventually lead to a worsening of your symptoms and can impact other areas of your life, including your career and relationships. Without the appropriate treatment, brain toxicity can steal your mind and steal your life.

If you are experiencing psychiatric symptoms and you arent responding to treatment, its worth investigating if exposure to mold or other toxins may be the root cause.
