How Are Mold Allergies And Exposure Diagnosed
There are no proven tests that show when or where you may have been exposed to mold.
But your doctor may check for mold allergies by reviewing your symptoms and performing one of the following tests:
- Blood test. Your doctor takes a blood sample and then sends it to a laboratory to measure the number of certain antibodies, which can indicate your immune systems sensitivity to different mold species.
- Skin prick test. Your doctor takes a small amount of mold and applies it to your skin using a tiny needle. Your skin will break out in bumps, a rash, or hives if youre allergic to that type of mold.
What Is Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome

Could you just briefly define CIRS for people, if theyve never heard that term before?
DrKM: Sure. We call this Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, or CIRS. The idea is that there are many systems that can be manifesting an inflammatory response because of a certain environmental exposure, or infection that somebody might have. For example, the biggest CIRS trigger for most people is mold and mycotoxin exposure from water-damaged buildings. And in a certain group of genetically-susceptible people, this will trigger an inflammatory response that affects many different systems in the body, from the GI tract, brain, and nervous system, to pulmonary and respiratory tracts, and inflammation in the musculoskeletal system. We call this CIRS.
DrMR: Okay. Now, Im curious to get a little bit about your background, how you got into this field, and what your current practice looks like. Can you give us the short story there?
DrMR: Great. Pretty broad offering there. So there are a number of things I want to try to dig into more.

How Can I Be Exposed To Mold
People are exposed to molds every day, usually by touching or breathingthem. Because molds naturally exist outdoors and indoors, living in a totallymold-free environment is practically impossible. As molds grow, spores can bereleased into the air where they can be easily inhaled. People who inhale largenumbers of spores may get sick. Possible health concerns are an importantreason to prevent mold growth and to clean up molds in indoor environments.
The Basics: Good Nutrition Sleep And Exercise
I cant forget about the basics! Obviously in order to detox properly you need to be eating the foods that your body reacts to least.
Keep a journal to help figure this out. While I believe everyone should be eating 100% whole foods, its best to listen to your body to figure out how much protein, fat, and carbs you can tolerate as I dont believe one diet fits all.
Also, if youre not sleeping well, work to balance your circadian rhythm or your bodys 24 hour clock. Your body and especially your brain detox a ton at night, so getting 7-9 hours of deep sleep is crucial to recovery.
And the last basic is exercise! And by this I just mean getting out to move your body. I dont recommend over-exercising as that can stress your body.
But things like walking and stretching are safe at first. As you heal you may be able to tolerate exercises such as jogging and weight lifting. Getting your heart rate up, increasing circulation, and sweating all work to detoxify your body.
So those are my favorite natural detoxification methods. If you are interested in working with me, apply here or join my free mold illness and CIRS Facebook group here. Thanks for reading and have a blessed day!

Approaches To Mold Exposure Testing
When mold exposure was first identified as a health issue, the main tests used looked purely for general inflammation markers and antibodies. The test in and of itself did not actually identify true toxicity, nor was it specific. And, if your immune system is not functioning normally there was a risk of a false negative. The tests now are much more specific and well review them in detail later in the article.
Interestingly enough, mold can cause systemic effects in the body from acute or chronic exposure. Someone who understands that well and is also a pioneer in understanding how low-dose biotoxin exposure, including toxic mold and algae, impacts our health and contributes to disease-states is Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker. His website SurvivingMold.com, is a website that is coveted in the biotoxin-effected community. In 2010, a group of people working in the mold field published this consensus report based on the expert experiences of those in the biotoxin-field and dubbed mold toxicity a Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome . Its referred to as that throughout PubMed and since the report was published.

The use of these peptides is essential in the early stages of treatment, as they support the clearing of brain inflammation, improve energy levels, and help the immune system re-regulate.

The Different Black Mold Tests

The first thing to do is verify that you have black mold. Symptoms of mold exposure are almost identical to other fatigue issues, like Lyme disease and chronic fatigue syndrome. And because mold can grow behind walls as a result of burst pipes or water damage, its often hard to pinpoint where mold is in your home.
If you can see black mold in the caulking around your bathtub or below your kitchen sink, for example and you have no reason to suspect its elsewhere in your house, you may be okay skipping a formal test. Otherwise, you have a few different options when it comes to testing for mold in your home:
- Mold culture test. This test includes a petri dish with a swab. You expose the petri dish to either the air or, through the swab, a specific area in your home, and then you cover it and let it sit for 48 hours. If you get lots of growth in the petri dish , you have a mold problem. If you get little to no growth, youre okay. Mold culture tests are fast and cheap . A mold culture test is a good option if you suspect mold in your workplace or school. The downside is that the test wont tell you where mold is only if mold is present. Heres a good mold culture test.
- ERMI test. Environmental relative moldiness index testing will tell you with much more specificity what mold is in your home and how big of a problem it is. ERMI tests will run you $200-$300.

Take Natural Detox Supplements
Natural detox supplements will prove to be just as useful in getting rid of your symptoms as man made medicines, but when you feel better- you can be sure that its because your body is actually healing.
My top three recommendations to heal from mold toxicity are:
- CGEL: increases the cells natural ability to undergo the natural mechanism of detox
- BIND: is a powerful binder that sweeps the body and effectively eliminates toxins from the blood
- CytoDetox: enters the cell membrane and act as a vehicle to getting rid of the toxins as we up-regulate cell function, and prevents reabsorption.

The 3 Key Steps To Treat Mold Illness And Cirs
Step 1: Differential diagnosis
This step is the most important step in treatment. Exposure to a water-damaged building combined with a symptom cluster that is unique to mold illness is the initial screening tool. Genetic tests will determine whether or not you have specific types of something called the HLA . 23- 25% of the population has specific HLA genes known to trigger mold illness.
It is not uncommon to have mold illness combined with another illness. Before jumping on the diagnosis of CIRS/mold illness, be sure your practitioner has also done basic blood tests to rule in/out other conditions.
Other conditions that share similar symptoms with mold illness and CIRS include:
-
Thyroid issues
- Fatigue is one of the more common symptoms found in mold illness. Unfortunately, fatigue is a non-specific symptom. Meaning there are many possible causes of fatigue fatigue doesnt point to any particular illness.
- One of the main symptoms of an under-functioning thyroid is fatigue. It is important to do proper thyroid testing to accurately rule in/out thyroid illness.
Autoimmunity
Asthma
Abnormal kidney function
Cortisol abnormalities
Hyperflexibility
Von Willebrand disease

Take the Moisture Out
Make your home less mold-friendly. The key is to control the amount of moisture in the air. Dehumidifiers and air conditioners will help. The humidity needs to be below 60%. Between 35% and 50% is even better.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is a mild, white mineral powder, that can be used to kill mold in your home, plus it is safe for your family and pets. In addition to killing mold, it will absorb moisture to help keep molds away.
Hydrogen Peroxide Mixture
Mix one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide with one cup of water, put in a spray bottle or wet cloth with it and wipe on mold. Keep it for ten minutes or so. Wipe off with more hydrogen peroxide then use baking soda mixture to kill any remaining molds and help prevent more from returning.
Foods
Yogurt containing live cultures fights off yeast in the body, which the mold feeds on. Oranges and tomatoes, as well as other foods containing large quantities of vitamin C, also help the body to fight off mold, as well as limit the symptoms.
