How To Clean Mold Off Outdoor Wood Furniture

Is Mold On Wood Dangerous

Cleaning Tips : Cleaning Outdoor Wood Furniture

Yes, it is. While the research on the severity of the health risks associated with wood mold has not been conclusive, there is a unanimous agreement among experts that its presence poses a health risk for humans. Exposure to large quantities of mold spores can potentially cause respiratory issues and allergic reactions in some people. These allergic reactions are not seasonal, and they can happen at any time of the year.

Such exposure can cause symptoms such as:

  • Skin irritation
  • Constant fatigue
  • Difficulty in breathing

Some mold types produce toxic chemicals known as mycotoxins, which can be present on the mold spores or the small mold fragments in the air. Exposure to some mycotoxins can cause neurological problems in humans, severe health conditions such as cancer, and may cause death in some cases. Large quantities and more prolonged exposure can make these mycotoxins particularly harmful.

Black mold is among the common toxigenic molds found indoors. Different types of toxigenic mold produce certain mycotoxins that will cause specific symptoms.

What Is Black Mold

Several types of mold are black. But when people refer to black mold, they most commonly mean Stachybotrys chartarum. This is a greenish-black mold that grows on wood, paper products, and cotton. Moisture is necessary for it to grow. This black mold can produce toxins that cause adverse health effects, including coughing, wheezing, and eye irritation. Some people are more sensitive to it than others.

Stickers Or Glue Residue

Use the edge of a credit card or plastic scraper to loosen as much of the sticky residue as possible. Place a dab of olive oil or mineral oil on a soft cloth and rub it across the stained area. Move to a clean area of the cloth as the residue is transferred and reapply more oil if needed.

Finish by using some wood polish to even out the shine on the entire wood surface.

Tips To Prevent Mold And Mildew On Patio Furniture

Eliminate Moisture: Make sure that there is a positive flow of air. If your patio furniture is placed inside a sunroom or enclosed space, you may want to get a dehumidifier or have a fan blow air out of the room to reduce the amount of moisture in the room.

Sunlight: Dark, damp, and humid conditions are the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew. Move your furniture outside of the shade or lower your patio umbrella to allow more sunlight to reach your cushions. Nows the time to trim up that old tree that youve been meaning to get to!

Furniture Covers: If the furniture is placed under a cover, make sure your patio covers have vents and are made of breathable materials like these.

Teak: I wrote a guide on teak furniture here. You should look at this if you want to learn more specifics on mold and mildew as they relate to outdoor teak furniture.

Regular Care and Maintenance: The more often you clean your outdoor furniture, the more likely youll be able to prevent it from popping up again. I recommend light cleaning 3-4 times a year just to keep the cobwebs out.More Tips to Clean Outdoor Furniture:

Removing Mildew From Cushions

Pin on Cleaning

To remove mildew from your outdoor cushions, first, determine whether you have fabric or acrylic cushions.

Fabric Cushions: To clean fabric cushions, dilute a 12 cup of bleach into 1 gallon of water. Use a spray bottle to apply the mixture, then clean the mildew off of the cushion with a scrub brush. Once you have removed the mildew, rinse the cushion with water, and leave the cushions out in the sun to dry for the afternoon. For deeper mildew, youll want to repeat the process several times.

We do have one word of warning. Not all outdoor cushions can tolerate cleaning with bleach. All Summer Classics cushions are designed to resist fading in the sun, and they can be cleaned with bleach. For cushions from other manufacturers, it is very important to do a spot test before using bleach on your outdoor fabric. To do a spot test, use the mixture on a small, inconspicuous spot to make sure that the color doesnt fade with the bleach.

If your fabric fails the spot test, never fear. There is a less harsh mixture that you can use. Pour a 12 cup of Lysol into a gallon of hot water and use this solution to scrub your cushion. You can then rinse it off with a mixture of 1 cup lemon juice and 1 cup salt dissolved into a gallon of hot water.

Acrylic Cushions: For acrylic cushions, mix 1 cup bleach and 2 cups of detergent into a gallon of water. It is easiest to apply with a spray bottle. Let is set for about 30 minutes before rinsing with water.

Mildew On Fabric And Cushions

Depending on the type of fabrics you have as part of your patio furniture, mold and mildew can be more or less of a problem. Sunbrella fabrics, olefin fabrics, and other acrylics, are not particularly prone to mildew and mold growth, but other fabrics can be troublesome. See our guide to outdoor fabrics for more information.

Often, outdoor fabrics such as cushions can be unzipped and washed in a washing machine. This will frequently remove troublesome stains, mold, and mildew.

Its never wise to machine-dry cushions, especially zipper cushions, as the heat of a dryer can shrink the fabric, and you wont be able to get it over the cushion.

How Can You Prevent The Appearance Of Mold

The best solution against mold is its prevention. The mold is not neglected and you must do everything possible to prevent its occurrence in the home.

There are a few simple methods by which you can keep your mold away from your home:

  • ventilate the rooms: it is advisable to ventilate the rooms at least twice a day to eliminate the moisture accumulated inside the house. The bath is one of the places predisposed to the appearance of mold due to the increased humidity, so after each shower it is advisable to leave the window open or, as the case may be, to start the ventilation for a few minutes.
  • controls humidity: humidity can be controlled using a room hygrometer that indicates the humidity level. The recommended humidity value should be between 30% and 50%, lower in summer and higher in winter. You can keep humidity under control and at the same time to surround your home with plants that absorb moisture: fern, ivy or chamaedorea .
  • waterproofing: if waterproofing is done correctly, it can prevent mold from appearing inside the home. There are many types of materials that are used for waterproofing and it is recommended that this be done by a specialist so as to remove the problem of water infiltration through the walls.
  • do not dry the laundry inside: evaporation of water inside the house will increase the humidity level. It is advisable to dry the laundry in an open or well-ventilated space
  • frozen sticks: a modern solution against mold is the use of these frozen sticks.

How Do We Detect Mold In Places Where It Is Not Visible

Mold is hard to detect because it can also be formed in places out of sight: after large furniture objects, for example.

It is possible to have mold under the parquet, in case you do not see it, but it can affect your health, as well as the one from visible places.

You can realize that there is mold in your house if you feel a specific smell of moisture.

However, if you return home after spending some time away, you smell this smell, but do not find the place where it formed, you should investigate its source. If you do not see it behind the furniture items, you should also check the floor.
