We had a white sectional cleaned by Sears about 2yrs ago. It’s in a room that we don’t really use so we didn’t notice what was happening until a few weeks ago. I think the couch was very wet after they cleaned it, but they never told us what to do. The couch has what looks like black mold in spots all over it. It’s worse on the parts that are not exposed. Can we get rid of the mold or do we need to get rid of the couch? And is it toxic? Please help.

The amount of mold growth in the photo is quite severe. This type of mold is typically only found in rooms with highly elevated humidity. I recommend installing a relative humidity gauge. Your goal is to keep the RH below 55%. The lower the temperature, the higher the RH. We have a detailed explanation on our humidity page. Keeping the temperature at 65 degrees will lead to higher humidity. This temperature may require the use of a dehumidifier. I would also contact an HVAC company to evaluate your system. An air conditioning unit should lower the humidity in the home. Something is not working correctly.

Until the humidity problem is addressed, any cleaning procedures will only yield temporary results.

Many molds are dark or black in color. When they use the term, however, most people refer only to one particular strain of mold, Stachybotrys Chartarum. Although it can come in many colors, most people refer to it as black. This mold is often described as being gelatinous. It often appears to have a thin layer of slime coating due to its high moisture content. Black mold can appear pale or powdery when it dries. There are numerous reports that S. Chartarum is not known to cause serious health problems. However, there are a few scientific studies that support this claim. This doesnt mean that you should allow chartarum to grow in your home or office. You should instead take steps to prevent mold growth from indoor and outdoor surfaces. Black mold cannot survive in high humidity or condensation. However, it can be revived when sufficient water is available.
