Step 1: Get Outside
When dealing with mold and mildew, it is best to do it in an open, well-ventilated environment. Once you start cleaning the piece, the mold and mildew will release spores into the air. As none of us want that floating around in our house, we recommend cleaning the pieces outside whenever possible.
Be Prepared
Also, be sure to clean the floor beneath the furniture. These spores can spread easily, and to fully remove them, you need to clean both the furniture and the surrounding area.

Take the sofa out and leave it in the sunlight for 2-4 hours.
Create a mold-removing solution by mixing bleach and detergent in water. Keep the ratio of the components 1:10:20, respectively.
Apply the solution to the affected area and leave it on for 15 minutes.
Next, scrub it off with a sponge or a soft-bristled brush.
Air-dry the sofa bed and repeat the process, if necessary.

How To Get Rid Of Black Mold
Some places to find black mold are bathrooms, basements, and crawl spaces. The best way to identify black mold is how it grows in a circular pattern, its black color, and it grows in patches that resemble dots. On dry surfaces, it looks very similar to soot, while on a wet surface, such as shower grout, it looks like slime.
If you notice mold of any kind, you need to ask yourself what gets rid of mold. There are numerous homemade cleaning solutions you can use to kill the black mold some may work better than others. The key to cleaning black mold is to pick one cleaner and stick with it.
Mixing cleaners, such as bleach and ammonia, can cause adverse chemical reactions. Never use bleach or hydrogen peroxide when removing mold from upholstery.
- 1 cup bleach mixed with one gallon of water
- 1 teaspoon tea tree oil and 1 cup of water
- 2 parts water mixed with 1 part hydrogen peroxide
- 1 cup Borax mixed in one gallon of water
- Pure distilled vinegar
Select your homemade cleaner and apply it to the black mold. Allow the soap to soak for about 15 minutes. This allows the cleaner to reach and kill the roots and takes care of removing black mold to prevent it from coming back.
Scrub porous surfaces with a bristled scrub brush to work the detergent in. Rinse the area with clean water and check to see if all mold is gone.
If mold is still present, repeat the cleaning process. If mold is gone, dry area with a towel or squeegee to remove all excess moisture.
White Vinegar & Baking Soda
White vinegar and baking soda are antifungal and suit best for couch mould removal and couch sanitization. Sprinkle some amount of white vinegar on the black mould and let it saturate it. How To Clean Mould With Vinegar
To clean mould and mildew and kill their spores you will need white distilled vinegar the cheapest brand from the supermarket will do just fine.
- Mix 1 part of vinegar with 1 part water and pour into a spray bottle.

If the mold is fuzzy and black, it may be much worse than just unsightly. The area should be opened to check for structural damage. Wear safety glasses and respiratory protection. All building materials should be bagged in heavy-duty plastic bags and disposed of properly. Allow the area to dry out thoroughly and make any needed repairs.

The amount of mold growth in the photo is quite severe. This type of mold is typically only found in rooms with highly elevated humidity. I recommend installing a relative humidity gauge. Your goal is to keep the RH below 55%. The lower the temperature, the higher the RH. We have a detailed explanation on our humidity page. Keeping the temperature at 65 degrees will lead to higher humidity. This temperature may require the use of a dehumidifier. I would also contact an HVAC company to evaluate your system. An air conditioning unit should lower the humidity in the home. Something is not working correctly.
Until the humidity problem is addressed, any cleaning procedures will only yield temporary results.
