How To Clean Mold Off Books

Make A Gap Between The Bookshelf And The Wall

How to Remove Mold from Books?

Since bookshelves are very heavy when filled with books, we may think attaching them right to the wall is safer. However, it is better to place them a little farther away from the wall to allow better airflow and prevent high humidity. Please ensure to avoid the bookshelf from tipping over, and leave a gap between the unit and the wall.

It is also highly recommended to open the windows as much as possible for ventilation. Finally, do not dry your washings in a room with a bookshelf. The paper absorbs the moisture and becomes a breeding ground for mold.

How To Remove Musty Smell From Books

If you don’t detect signs of mold or mildew but theres still a funky smell, follow these tips:

1. Wear your gear. First of all, wear the appropriate protection. Wear goggles, a mask, and a pair of gloves.

2. Clean up.Clean the covers with a soft cloth.

3. Sheets between pages.Place dryer sheets inside different pages of your book.

4. Magic powder. Magic? Baking soda isnt Harry Potter, but it does wonders. Its super powerful and safe. Place your book and an open box of baking soda inside a plastic container. Close the container.

5. Time for quarantine. Leave your books in there for around a week.

6. Set them free. After this time has passed, its time to set them free.

Can you notice a difference?

We really hope that this is helpful. But, isn’t it also helpful to know how to prevent this from happening in the first place?

Airing Out Books To Remove Odor

  • 1Fan out the pages of your book. Stand the book upright on a table. Fan out the pages gently. If your fingers can’t disentangle pages without ripping them, use a letter opener and tweezers to separate pages. Alternatively, blow toward the top of your book to fan the pages out.
  • 2Use a hairdryer to dry pages. If you would like to speed up the process, you can aim a hairdryer at the pages of your book. Keep it on a warm setting to avoid books becoming affected by heat damage. Continue aiming the hairdryer at your upright book until the pages are dry.Advertisement
  • 3Let books stand to dry in a spot free of moisture. Either choose a warm spot inside your home or place the book in the sun. Only place the book in direct sunlight if your book isn’t valuable. Direct sunlight may fade the book and, especially for older books, this could lead to permanent disintegration, discoloration, and the curling up of the pages. Ensure that every page is dry before returning the book to its shelf.Advertisement

Use Denatured Alcohol To Remove Mold From Books

A reliable mold remover is a denatured alcohol . Some denatured alcohols are diluted with water, which is generally more effective in disinfecting due to its moderate volatility and penetrating power.

However, in the case of paper such as books, there is a risk that the paper will become squishy even if the mold is successfully removed. Therefore, for mold removal, it is best to use a water-diluted product for hardcovers and a highly volatile 100% alcohol product for paperbacks.

Place Plastic File Holders On Top Of The Books

Even if you keep books on a bookshelf, dust will inevitably get in if there are gaps. This is especially true when the books are arranged in a row. To avoid that, you can put file holders, which can be easily purchased, on top of the books to prevent fine dust from sticking to the top and inside of the books.

When cleaning, you dont have to take out the books all the time. Instead, you can just take out the file holders to remove the dust, which is also convenient.

What Do Mold On Ceilings Look Like

Generally, mold on ceilings is black. Avoid mistaking it for soot build-up on your ceiling.

To differentiate, take a closer look. If there are filaments on the structure, then it is most likely mold.

If the mold growth is worse in one part of the room, then the problem may be humidity-related. If there is staining, then the reason for mold is roof leaks. Roof leak-related mold growth also follows a circular pattern, like water stains.

Comic Book Dry Cleaning Is A Must

When comic book collectors approach me regarding the services I offer, they tend to focus primarily on my pressing service. What I want to explore in this post is the dry cleaning service the Comic Doctor offers as well. For comics that have not been stored properly over the years, a dry clean will work wonders. Dry cleaning will remove dirt, grime and minor staining from comic books including led and wax pencil marks. Dry cleaning will not remove foxing , pen/ink stains or water stains.

Books that have been stored in damp areas often have a distinct smell and are grimy/ rough to the touch. This condition can be lessened greatly through dry cleaning. If a book has mold and mildew staining , this sort of defect can only be corrected through restoration.

Although many collectors change their bags and boards regularly, those that do not or have not may notice that dark staining has developed on the white areas of the cover this condition is reversible. Remember that the Comic Doctor includes a quick dry clean on all books that are received for a press at no additional charge. If a comic book is extremely dirty and requires extensive work, however, additional fees may be incurred. See my pricing chart for more details.

For more information about comic book dry cleaning, please look around this website or feel free to drop me an e-mail or give me a call. Thank you!

    Why Do Books Smell Musty

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products. Mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery. So, theres the answer: Paper and fabrics are one of molds favorite foods!

That could be one of the reasons why your books smell musty. That funky smell comes from mold. And why do mold colonies tend to grow more in some libraries than in others?

These are some factors that can increase the chances of mold showing up in yours:

    • Darkness: Mold colonies are afraid of sunlight.
    • Warm temperatures: They love heat and grow better when its warm around.
    • High moisture: They need high indoor relative humidity levels to survive.
    • Food supplies: Mold colonies grow where they find food. Some of their favorite foods are leather, cloth, paper, wallpaper, and wood.
    • Calm still air: Mold loves it when the air is still and calm.
    • Dusty surfaces: Mold finds dusty surfaces very attractive.

My grandpas books met all these conditions so no wonder why they were invaded by mold:

    • The books were hidden in absolute darkness.
    • The house had warm temperatures all year round.
    • It was humid all year round.
    • The shelves were made out of wood.
    • The books were facing the wall and there was no air circulation at all.
    • Dust, dust and more dust. The inside of those shelves wasnt cleaned for ages!

    Limit Your Exposure To Mold

Its important to limit your exposure to mold and mold spores. Keep them out of your eyes and try not to inhale any.

    • Wear a mask or an N-95 respirator to avoid inhaling mold.
    • Wear gloves that extend to the middle of your forearm. If youre just using water and a mild detergent, household rubber gloves work fine.
    • Wear goggles that dont have ventilation holes to avoid getting mold or spores in your eyes.

How Do You Get Rid Of Mold On Paper

Microbes and mold should be eliminated. Mold and debris should be removed using a dry, soft cloth. Place a thin cloth over the end of a vacuum hose attachment and suction the document until it is completely clean. Making use of a soft cloth slightly wet with denatured alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to wipe or spot-clean a paper document or book is a good idea.

How To Remove Mold From Leather Bound Books Vs Paper Bound Books

While many suggest you use a soft cloth with alcohol on it, we recommend you opt for a HEPA filter vacuum hose attachment with a thin cloth on the end.

This will help remove mold growth rather than killing it. It will also prevent damage to both the pages and the ink.

On the other hand, if you have a leather bound book you could use a damp cloth as leather is tanned and therefore does not putrefy when it gets wet.

That being said if you use chemical-based liquids such as alcohol or even too much water, the leather may blacken.

Whichever method you choose to use, always test it on a small and less important part of the book in order to ensure that it works before undertaking the process on the entirety of the book.
