How To Clean Mold From An Expensive Mattress Pad

How To Remove Black Mould From The Mattress | Marks Mattress Cleaning

Mold and mildew can build up in your home as a result of excess moisture. If your mattress pad becomes wet and you live in a humid environment, mildew and mold spores can grow. Cotton, rayon and linen are some of the fabrics on which mold is most likely to grow. While a mattress pad exposed to flooding probably needs replacing, you can remove mold from a washable pad that has been wet for less than 48 hours.

1

Take the mattress pad outdoors and lay it flat in direct sunlight. A patio or driveway works best for this part of the project.

2

Brush away the mold spores with a stiff scrub brush and allow the mattress pad to remain in the sun for at least three hours.

3

Fill a top-loading washing machine with hot water and add laundry detergent as the machine fills. If you use a front-loader or high-efficiency machine, place the mattress pad in the machine by itself, add detergent to the dispenser and set the water temperature to hot.

4

Pour 1 cup of pine cleaner or disinfectant into a top-loading machine as it fills. If using a front-loader or HE machine, fill the bleach dispenser with pine cleaner.

5

Remove the mattress pad from the machine as soon as the cycle finishes. If mold stains are still present, run the pad through the cycle again.

6

Dry the mattress pad in the dryer or hang it to dry in the sun.

How To Remove Mold From A Memory Foam Mattress

by Mary Ylisela / in Food

Memory foam mattresses conform to the body shape of the people that sleep on the mattresses. Originally made to help astronauts endure g-forces more comfortably during the lift-off process, a Swedish foam company began to work with the foam in the 1980s in an effort to develop products for consumer use. When mould develops on the surface of your Memory foam mattress, due to prolonged exposure to moisture or humidity, you must promptly and thoroughly remove it to prevent it from spreading further.

Remove linens from the memory foam mattress. Open a window or run an electric fan to help dry the surface of the mattress if there’s any moisture.

Vacuum the surface of the memory foam mattress to remove mould spores. Ensure you vacuum the entire surface to remove tiny mould spores that are not visible to the eye. Throw the vacuum bag away in a trash bag to prevent mould spores from transferring elsewhere.

How To Remove Mold From Mattress Naturally

Mold on a mattress is caused by excessive humidity. This can be due to humid air, or from water seeping into the mattress and remaining there for an extended period of time.

Mold thrives in moist environments, so if your environment has above-average levels of moisture, then it may likely have mold spores present too. In this part of the article, we’ll tell you how to get rid of mold in the mattress using natural, non toxic solutions:

Why Is There Mold In Your Mattress

How to Get Mold Out of a Mattress

Before looking into do it yourself mold removal, chances are you found mold. Unfortunately, finding mold in or under your mattress is not uncommon – it can happen in any type of mattress, whether it’s an organic natural mattress or a memory foam mattress. This can be disconcerting because mold in your mattress can be very hazardous to your health. Sleeping in a mattress with mold can lead to a variety of health issues.

What makes your mattress a natural choice for mold growth is that mold needs darkness, warmth, and moisture to grow … that really describes most sleeping environments. In simple terms, the moisture comes from your sweat. Everyone sweats in their sleep – some up to a pint during the course of an evening. The moisture accumulates in or under the mattress and provides a breeding ground for mold.

California-based bedding manufacturer Nest Bedding recently published an article that explains, “If your mattress is on the floor, on a solid, non-breathable base, or the slats are too plentiful or too wide, or simply too close together, the mattress cannot breathe properly and you accumulate moisture and eventually mold.”

A Few Tips For Future Prevention

To prevent unwanted mold growth from coming back in the future, here are a few more helpful tips:

    • Use a dehumidifier in your bedroom. Mold thrives in damp environments, so using a dehumidifier to keep the humidity levels in the bedroom down will help to prevent future mold growth.
    • Use an air purifier in your bedroom. An air purifier will help to circulate and filter the air in the bedroom. Using the appropriate type, an air purifier can actively remove mold spores that are in the air, preventing them from spreading further.
    • Let the air continue to circulate when you go away. People regularly shut off air conditioning, fans, dehumidifiers, or air purifiers when they are away from their homes. Leaving air circulating devices on with time-controlled settings to ensure safety is a great way to aid in preventing future mold growth.
    • Ensure the underside of the mattress has access to airflow. Investing in a slatted bed base will help air circulate properly on both sides of the mattress, rather than just the top. Unlike standard box springs and flat top bases, slatted bed bases will aid in preventing mold growth from forming on the underside of your mattress.

How To Fix A Moldy Mattress With Lemon

Lemon is very acidic and has a high concentration of citric acid that can help kill off most types of mold. The first thing to do would be to put lemon peels on the affected areas or spray with diluted lemon juice from a bottle.

If you happen to have any lemons laying around, cut them in half and squeeze out as much juice as possible, then apply it directly onto the area where there’s been an accumulation of moisture – this will not only soak up some water but also release more potent citrus oils into the air which may help resolve odors too .
