This cleaner should only be administered to light-colored carpets, however, as the peroxide will bleach darker carpets.
Homemade Hydrogen Peroxide Black Mold Killer
- ¾ cup of hydrogen peroxide
- 1 ½ cups of water
- 5 drops of lemon essential oil
Before starting, test a small area of the carpet first. Once you are satisfied with your test, spray the combined ingredients over the carpet using a medium-sized spray bottle.
Blot the affected area using a dry cloth, removing as much of the cleaner with the fabric as you can. After the carpet has had plenty of time to dry, double-check the area for other mold spots. Repeat the process as necessary.
This recipe will also work to clean black mold off vinyl siding if you have that problem outside in a shady corner of the house. Mold likes the dark and tends to accumulate in these types of areas. Spray the solution on the mold, let it sit, and rinse clean with the garden hose. For stubborn mold, you may need to do a little scrubbing.

So if youve incidentally left a garment a little too long in a wet, dark, damp place, here is how you can try to remove the mildew stain. Keep in mind I am not advocating this for garments or towels that smell like mildew but those items on which you can visibly see mold or mildew.

Why Mold Grows On Clothes
If you have clothes that are wet for more than 24 hours then mold can easily start to grow on them.
The most common reason mold grows on clothes is if you wash them and then leave them wet for a long time. After you wash your clothes you should dry them immediately. Drying clothes on the line in the sun is the best. And only put your clothes away once they are completely dry.
The same is true for clothes that are damp after you wear them. These need to be washed quickly or hung somewhere to air out. Make sure not to leave damp clothes in a wet pile or the hamper for days on end.
The other main reason that clothes grow mold on them is if the air in your home is too humid. Rooms where you store clothes need to be properly ventilated. Hanging clothes with some space between them in the closet or not packing them in too tightly together in drawers help the clothes air out when they are stored away.

While I have not yet found the ideal recipe that I can recommend, there are thousands of recipes for DIY Laundry Detergents. As I continue my quest for the ideal recipe for a DIY laundry detergent to remove mold, I have gained significant amounts of knowledge about the ingredients, their limitations, and the washing machine conditions where they may be most effective.
There are many ingredient options, each with some limitations. I have narrowed my ingredient list to a short list that I continue to experiment with. At this point, I see no harm in sharing my discoveries. Therefore, I would like to share some key observations on some of the tradeoffs when choosing ingredients.
Soap or Detergent: There are many articles regarding the use of natural soaps. These include Dr. Bronners, Kirks Castile Soap, Ivory, Zote, and Fels Naptha. They can come in bars that must be grated or cut into pieces and ground into small particles by a food processor.
My preference is baking soda in moderate amounts for its cleaning contribution, odor removing, and moderate alkalinity. When it comes to mold, the acidity of the laundry soap becomes very important as it helps break the cell walls of mold spores.
The citrus seed extracts also act as a preservative for the DIY laundry detergent.

Removing Mold From Your Home
If you notice a small amount of mold growing somewhere in your home, vinegar is the best option to remove it. The vinegar will penetrate the porous surface and remove the underlying membrane as well as the mold growth on the surface. However, you should only use this method if there is a small amount of mold in your home. Attempting to remove significant mold growth yourself is ineffective and dangerous.
If the mold growth is too severe or widespread, you must call a mold remediation professional immediately. Removing small amounts of mold with vinegar is safe and effective but any substantial amount requires specialized equipment and training. Mold removal professionals will ensure all mold in your home is removed safely and effectively.

Cleaning Mold With Vinegar
White distilled vinegar is effective for killing small amounts of mold. It can kill over 80 percent of mold species commonly found in your home and as a mild acid, it can help prevent mold as well as remove it. Make sure you follow these steps when cleaning mold with vinegar:
- Protect yourself from exposure to the mold by wearing protective gear such as gloves and a mask.
- Pour the vinegar into a spray bottle but do not dilute it. Diluting the vinegar will reduce its effectiveness.
- Spray the moldy areas and let the vinegar sit for an hour so that the mold can absorb it completely.
- If you need to scrub the mold, do so with a baking soda solution. Pour 2 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of baking soda into a spray bottle and shake well.
- Spray the moldy area with the baking soda mixture and use a scrubbing brush or scouring pad to scrub the mold. Wearing protective gloves will protect you from direct contact.
- Use clean, warm water to rinse the area.
- Spray the vinegar again over the area and let it dry naturally to make sure all the mold has been killed.
How To Identify Black Mold
So youve found an area of your tiles or carpet you suspect is mold. But how do you know for sure? There are several indicators and signs to look out for when determining whether an area has, in fact, a mold infestation and not a water spot or build-up of dirt. The first thing you want to look for is any discoloration.
If there are white or grey splotches along the carpet, these are signs of mildew rather than mold. While these are generally discussed interchangeably and can even be treated using most of the same methods, mildew often requires less invasive techniques when cleaning. If black or blackish-green growth covers the area, however, this is mold.
Another standard indicator of mold is the presence of damp areas on a carpet. A wet spot on your carpet will dry after soaking up the excess liquid with a dry towel or even air dry on its own over time.
If the moisture doesnt dry over time, this is another clue of mold growing beneath the carpet. Not all mold will appear on the surface of the rug, and you may have to pull back a small corner of your carpet to verify.
