Castor Oil Concrete Release Agent

The mix ratio of castor oil and denatured alcohol is 8 parts denatured alcohol to 1 part castor oil.

Spray or brush it on the inside of the latex rubber before pouring cement in. Make sure there are no puddles inside the mold after the mold release is applied.

The concrete wont set where the puddles are and it will be sandy when you take the ornament out of the mold. Never, ever, use any motor or petroleum-based oil on latex rubber.

That will ruin the rubber. Also keep the latex mold out of direct sunlight or the rubber will weaken and eventually, tear.

How To Make Concrete Statuary

How To Make Concrete Statues? Well, making concrete lawn ornaments is fun and can be very rewarding if done right. The 3 main things in making concrete lawn ornaments are cement, sand, and water. Making and painting concrete lawn ornaments is fairly easy and straightforward process. Shouldnt be a big learning curve for someone who really wants to do this.

CEMENT: There are a bunch of different types of cement on the market today. The kind you want to get is normal Portland cement. They make white Portland cement, but its more expensive.

SAND: I use Jersey sand. You dont want to use a fine sand, like a beach sand, it will make your concrete statues weak and wont last over time. It is also important to dampen your sand. What I do is fill a tub with sand and drench the sand with water and let it sit overnight. The water takes the air out of the sand. That helps big time with minimizing pinholes in the finished product.

WATER: Good clean water is what Id recommend. Never really want to use stagnant or dirty water.

You could use a cement mixer, but to start Id recommend using a mixing tub. That way you get a better idea of the kind of consistency you need. You want a soupy or liquidy type of mix to pour into your molds. That way theirs less chance or trapping air and it fills in the mold better as opposed to a stiffer mix.

How To Make Concrete Molds From Liquid Rubber

Liquid rubber is a great way to make durable perfectly smooth molds. There are two main suppliers of urethane rubber for concrete molds: Smooth-On and Polytek. Both make polyurethane rubbers that come as two-part liquids . Polytek recommends using a 74-45 or a 75-60 material for concrete countertops. The second number indicates the Shore A hardnessa 60 is about the hardness of a car tire and the 45 is a bit softer.

The great advantage of rubber molds is their flexibility. Rubber molds can easily release from intricate details, even undercuts. Rubber molds are used for sinks, drainboards, soap dishes, edges, and many other details. They are typically attached to the countertop mold with silicone caulk and then caulk is applied around them to seal the joint and create a smooth transition.

Smooth-On

To make a complete sink mold, Salisbury still recommends pouring the rubber. But rather than making a big block of rubber that would be heavy and expensive , you would create the model for the sink basin then create a plug of foam or wood that would sit inside the mold. The rubber is then poured into the annular area between the model and the plug, which makes it lighter and provides a central core that can be easily fastened to the countertop mold. If youre using fiberglass or aluminum molds, you will have to prepare your molds to ensure you can take them apart after there poured and have cured. Not maintaining or prepping your molds before use will shorten their lifespan and new molds are not cheap.

Use either a brush or spray bottle to apply the mold release prior to pouring. There are 2 different oils I use. Castor oil mixed with denatured alcohol or 91% rubbing alcohol for latex rubber molds and non-detergent motor oil for aluminum molds.

You can find these things on Amazon here, Castor Oil and Denatured Alcohol and for aluminum molds, youll want this, Non Detergent Motor Oil.

Pouring Concrete Statue Molds

Pouring your concrete statue molds can be tricky. The best way I found to do it is by slowly pouring the cement down the sides of the latex rubber till the bottom is covered and then slowly dump in the center of the mold and after the mold is full, tap around the bottom of the mother mold with a rubber mallet to release the trapped air in the concrete.

If its a small mold you can shake it to. Once filled, let it sit for about a day and then carefully take the mold apart. Green concrete isnt that strong, so take your time doing it.

Here is a video showing how to shake your molds when your pouring. This is a better way than using a rubber mallet.

Patching Up Air Pockets In Your Statue

After you take your statue out of its mold there are going to be a few blemishes here and there. Thats normal. Its from air being trapped in the concrete mold when it was poured.

To fix this is super easy! Just take some portland cement, the same stuff you used to mix with the sand and put some in a bowl an add water till its like a paste and then cover up your pinholes and any other blemishes that you might have.

Remember, just use the cement, dont add sand.

Built pavers over top of a badly cracked and decrepit sidewalk. Different sakrete concrete bags yielded slightly different color hues so enabled me to rearrange a random color assortment. Overall the mold held up very well and is going to storage in the event any of these paver stones break.

    Have A Question Before Buying

Can you use the molds to make circles, gentle curves, etc. ?

Yes you can.if you do some pre-work first and lay out the borders with bricks this will give you a visual to work within.

You could also dig small trenches where the border bricks were and fill in the space with small landscape pebble to keep the border.

How much concrete does it take to fill one mold?

    About 6.25 kg concrete .

How long does the concrete have to set before removing the mold to do another?

That would depend on the type of concrete you purchase and how you mix it. Generally speaking you can move the mold after about 2 3 minutes to the next stamp area.

Can you do a driveway with this? Wondering if the weight of vehicles could easily shift or crack the concrete after awhile?

    Yes you could.

With that said these molds are more for landscaping or stepping stones.

What do you use for the fill in the gaps with?

You can fill the gaps with soil and then put some grass on it. Sand and small gravel is another alternative.

Can the molds be rotated so that the pattern is less uniform?

Yes, you can rotate this mould to create your own unique patterns.

If you like the random style, you can make the pattern not uniform.

If you like the uniform style, you can also create a uniformed pattern with it.

What do you mean by irregular shape?

The irregular shape mold simply means the pattern of this mold is random, and the shape of it is not square
