Here Is A Real Example Of What Happens When You Use Bleach To Clean Mold From Drywall
In this instance, we wanted to see what would happen if we sprayed bleach on some mold growth in a bathroom ceiling.
So, we identified an area with mold growth that was caused by high humidity and a bad exhaust fan.
We began by spraying bleach on the growth then used a sponge to scrub the area.
This was done until the growth was removed and the area was visibly clean. Then, we let the area sit for about a week without fixing the moisture problem.

Bleach is great for removing mold, but to be honest it isnt the greatest stuff to expose yourself too. So for those of you that prefer more natural options for removing mold then you can try substituting bleach for any of the following.
White Vinegar: Vinegar is a great natural cleaner and is known to kill most varieties of mold. It can be applied as straight vinegar or diluted slightly if the smell is too strong for you.
Baking Soda: Mix baking soda with small amounts of water to form a paste and let it sit on the mold affected area for 10 20 minutes. Then use a bit of elbow grease and a nylon brush to scrub that mold out of existence! If you want to make a stronger paste, then use vinegar instead of water just dont use too much vinegar as this is also the method to make the famous model volcano.

Does Bleach Kill Mold No It Doesnt
Mold, a resilient and tough organism that is not only unsightly but also brings a lot of havoc in the form of structural damage and potential health effects.
Mold spores are ubiquitous, but moisture can be a limiting factor for active mold growth.
A musty odor and multi-colored patches on surfaces can be its hallmark characteristics that indicate its presence.
Many different products have been marketed to help homeowners say goodbye to mold infestations.
Your over-the-counter bleach is one of them.
It can produce the intended results but only on non-porous surfaces such as metal and glass. Bleach is less effective on any porous materials such as wallboard, wood, and most furniture commonly found in your home.
Porous materials have open pores and air gaps that provide a perfect breeding ground for mold spores. This characteristic of porous materials renders the use of bleach ineffective in most cases.
Porous items such as sponges, drywall, and furniture would provide a habitat for molds to grow deep beneath the surface.
No matter how often you clean the surface of the material, molds will continue to regrow unless the moisture source is eliminated.
The EPA often discourages individuals from using bleach to remove mold growth. Especially on porous surfaces. However, bleach can be used to disinfect non-porous surfaces when professional judgment is used.
Thoroughly Remove Excessive Mold From The Bathroom
Before you start applying one of these solutions, try to remove as much of the mold as you can using a scrubby brush and wash rags.
If the mold infestation is severe, it helps to get rid of large chunks first.

Where Does Mold Grow In My Shower
- Mold can grow in the grout. That is one of its favorite places.
- It can grow inside the window frame if your window is IN the shower like mine is.
- It can grow around the drain and on the drain plug.
- Mold can grow on the shower caulking.
- It can grow in the door tracks if you have doors.
- Mold can grow under shampoo bottles, bars of soap, shaving cream bottles, etc
- While not technically a part of the shower, mold can grow on a shower curtain.
Mold can also grow behind shower tiles and on the wall but this is due to a leak behind the shower and not from water in the shower typically. The exception is if your grout is old and cracking. Then water can seep behind the shower tiles allowing mold to grow.
How To Remove Mould From Shower Silicone
When trying to remove mould from shower silicone, the process can be a little difficult because of the way the silicone dries and its positioning. So, we have a quick list of things you are going to need before you start our tried and tested method:
- A basin or bowl to mix the solution in
- Bleach
- Clingfilm
- Paintbrush
#1 Spoon some baking soda into the bowl and slowly pour in the bleach, mixing it until you get a paste-like consistency.
#2 Take the paintbrush and use it to apply the paste to the mould on the silicone. You can also use rubber gloves if you dont have a brush to hand.
#3 Do your best to cover the paste on the silicone with clingfilm, although this can be a bit tricky so dont worry if it isnt perfect. Once this is done, leave it for between one and two hours.
#4 Remove the clingfilm and clean the paste away with warm water. If the mould is gone, the job is done, but if it still remains, you will have the start the process again.

How To Get Rid Of Black Mold In Shower Grout
I also previously wrote a post about the best way to clean grout by using and comparing Magic Eraser on grout, baking soda to clean grout, and a steam cleaner for grout. They all worked fairly well!
I didnt at the time have black mold growing in my shower grout though.
One of the best things you can do when battling black mold in shower grout is to replace the grout completely and re-grout. Mold often seems to grow on grout as it starts to age and crack as it is porous.
No, this is likely not an easy or cheap process, but this will ensure the grout is indeed mold-free. Just be sure to use top-quality grout!
Plus, you may also discover a water issue behind the tile or grout that you can better address so as to prevent it from growing again.

If you see pools of water or are starting to have plumbing issues, tending to these will be very important. You cant see what is going on behind the wall so calling a professional will be important.
A professional can come out with a thermal imaging camera and see what is going on inside the walls. If you dont take care of it, structural damage will occur and you will have higher costs to remove the mold and fix areas in your home.

Clean And Disinfect The Area
After the mould has been removed, the rest of the surfaces of the shower must be purged of mildew spores to prevent re-growth of mold on shower caulking. One of the most effective ways to remove the invisible mold spores is to spray the entire shower stall with the bleach mixture and then rinse and dry the shower walls and fixtures. Perform this task just prior to leaving the house for at least 48 hours. When the shower is allowed to dry completely, the spores that are present will die. Then the mold prevention tips can be implemented with a completely clean shower stall.
Best Cleaning Products For Bathroom Mold
With any cleaning product for bathroom mold, you should use gloves and work in a well-ventilated area. Wearing a mask is recommended as cleaning mold can cause the release of mold spores into the air.
There are plenty of products that claim to kill mold, but good old soap and water are usually enough to do the trick. You can also make a bathroom mold cleaning solution with items from around the house.
Borax, a white mineral powder, is a natural way to clean mold in the bathroom. Mix 1 cup borax with 1 gallon of warm water. Pour some of the solution into a spray bottle. Spray directly onto the surface you want to clean. Use a scrub brush, sponge, or clean rag to remove mold stains. Use the remaining borax mold cleaner to mop tile or vinyl floors.
Bleach is another good option for removing mold stains in the bathroom, but it should only be used in a well-ventilated area. Always open a window or turn on your bathroom exhaust fan when working with bleach. A 1:10 bleach to water solution is effective on nonporous surfaces like sinks, tubs, toilets, and showers, but it should not be used to clean mold from the ceiling or walls.

Due to the way bathrooms and showers are constructed today, the black mold you see in your shower is less likely to be the really hazardous type of mold. This is because your shower areas and surfaces dont have cellulose which is required for most of the really hazardous types of mold to grow.

Dont Want To Use Chemicals Heres How To Get Rid Of Black Mold In Your Bathroom Naturally
If synthetic chemicals arent an option for your family or pets, you can use effective natural methods to get rid of bathroom mold. Hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar, and baking soda are three nontoxic products that can remove mold in shower areas effectively. Hydrogen peroxide is naturally antifungal and antibacterial, which makes it perfect for treating mold. Baking soda also kills mold and absorbs moisture that facilitates mold growth.
Mix one part hydrogen peroxide and another part water into a water bottle and spray the solution onto the mold. Or, mix one tablespoon of baking soda into a spray bottle of water. Mold Cleaning Trick #: Keep Mold Away With Preventative Measures
Once mold is removed you can keep it away by:
-Always remove moisture from shower walls .
-Regularly spray vinegar to prevent the formation of mold and kill existing mold spores.
-Wash rugs, shower curtains and other bathroom accessories on a weekly basis.
-Control humidity in rooms prone to moisture and try to promote better airflow, for instance add a fan to small rooms without windows or natural airflow.
-Add ventilation
-Limit the number of products in your bathtub/shower, the more cluttered the area the more chance mold can hide and thrive.

How To Clean Black Mold In The Shower On Silicone
The most environmentally and healthy way to clean black mold in the shower on the silicone is by spraying distilled white vinegar on the mold and then wiping it off. As mentioned earlier, white distilled vinegar is powerful and can be used as a cleaning agent.
Be sure to put gloves on your hands to do this so the mold doesnt get on your skin. If you find the mold is in little crevices, use an old toothbrush, spray vinegar on it, and then scrub the crevice.
If the vinegar is not working, you can use bleach, but make sure you wear gloves and wear a face mask as the chemicals are harmful.

How To Remove Mould From Shower Grout
This is the first place you will find mould growing because it is porous and holds water for much longer. This method of mould removal uses bleach, so if you have coloured grout, it would be best to use one of the natural methods that we go through later on.
#1 Mix up another batch of the bleach solution and pour it into the spray bottle.
#2 Spray the mixture onto the affected grout all over the shower.
#3 Using a brush, preferably nylon, scrub the grout and get the mould off.
#4 Rinse the grout, and watch the mould and dirty water wash away, leaving everything looking clean and new.
How To Treat Mold In Hot Tub Jets And Pipes
Once you have signs of any type of mold in your spa, it’s always a good idea to change out the contaminated water and give your spa a fresh start.
Before you start the drain-and-refill process though, you’ll want to use a jet and pipe cleaner. This is the only way to dislodge and kill any mold growing inside the plumbing lines.
