Best Way To Remove Mold And Mildew From Tile Grout
As a bathtub re-finisher, I am constantly asked how to remove mold and mildew from around the tub and within the grout lines on the tile surround or inside a shower. It is actually black mildew that we are fighting and its not an easy fight.
Mildew binds itself to porous areas and areas that give it a surface to cling to such as silicone caulk. When you have mildew on the caulk between a bathtub and the surround it is best to remove it and just start over with a non-silicone caulk with a mildew resistant micro-ban additive.
Take a utility knife and score the old caulk length-wise from the top and from the side repeatedly until you have the majority removed. Then take your window scraper razor blade and go after the rest. Before you caulk it back in get all the nearby mildew removed as well.
Mildew thrives in a higher PH environment. Soap and minerals have higher PH levels and thus encourage mildew to grow. Staying on top of soap and minerals is the way to keep mildew at bay and this is done with a more acidic, lower PH cleaner such as Barkeepers Friend, which I highly recommend.
The key to removing mildew is by keeping a strong bleach solution on top of the affected area for a good amount of time. Having a strong grout brush is also important to impregnate the solution into the grout and work the mildew loose.
Stay at it and you will get rid of that mold and mildew in your grout!
How To Remove Mold From Grout Naturally
Many sources advise using baking soda and vinegar as a natural agent to remove mold from the shower grout. I have decided to test this advice out, and the results were unexpected.
Optimum pH
The primary reason why baking soda and vinegar works well in combating mold lies in their pH. The mold usually grows in pH 3 7 . If you have black mold in shower grout, the chances are that you are dealing with the Stachybotrys Chartarum. Its optimal pH for growth is 5.6-6.0 . Because of that, to get rid of the mold and keep it away, it helps to use ingredients that change the pH of the infested area, creating a hostile environment for the mold.

I know that using baking soda and vinegar is a widely spread tip however, I have seen various alternatives of how to use those ingredients, e.g.:
Baking Soda + Water Baking Soda + 3% Hydrogen Peroxide Baking Soda + White Vinegar Baking Soda + White Vinegar + 3% Hydrogen Peroxide Vinegar
But what is the best option? I have tested all the combinations mentioned above, leaving them to sit in the grout for about 20-30 minutes. First, I have started with 30 minutes, but then I have shortened it to 20 minutes, and the results seemed similar. The findings were quite surprising.

There are three ways to do it:
- Make a borax or baking soda paste with a bit of water and apply it to the moldy grout. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, then scrub the area with a brush and rinse it with water.
- Apply some borax or baking soda powder directly to a damp cloth and use that for cleaning the grout.
- Mix 1/2 cup of borax or baking soda with a gallon of water. Use a spray bottle to apply the solution over the mold and mildew. Let the mixture sit for about 30 minutes. Then, use the scrub brush and rinse it with water.
Remember, baking soda is abrasive. You should avoid scrubbing your tiles directly with a baking soda mixture. If youre going to use this cleaning agent, use a thin brush or toothbrush.
