Bleach removes the ugly mold color from surfaces but doesnt penetrate to the root of the problem like vinegar. I have found since routinely cleaning the shower with vinegar, I no longer see mold growing on my shower caulk.

To make this easy shower cleaner, mix 1 part vinegar with three parts warm water. Alternatively, you can use dawn combined with vinegar too by mixing 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup dawn dish detergent.

Dont go too long in between cleanings, and aim to clean your shower 3-4 times per month.

How To Clean Mold From Bathroom Tiles

Scrubbing with vinegar or a borax solution is a great way to clean mold from bathroom tile. For small applications, mix 2 tablespoons borax into 2 cups warm water and funnel into a spray bottle. Spray the solution on tiles and let it sit for a few minutes. As noted earlier, you can also make a large-batch tile cleaning solution with 1 cup borax and 1 gallon of warm water. Use a mop or sponge to scrub away the mold. Whether you use vinegar or borax, there is no need to rinse the solution. However, you will want to dry the floor so the moisture doesnt encourage the mold to return.

To clean mold from bathroom tile grout, use the same borax or vinegar solution as before. Apply it directly to grout lines and let it sit. Use a toothbrush or another small bristle brush to clean mold from bathroom tile grout. For hard-to-remove stains, mix two parts baking soda with one part vinegar to form a paste. Apply it to the grout and let it sit a few minutes before scrubbing away mold. If desired, you can also use a commercial grout cleaner.

Editor’s Tip: Check your tile material before using one of these solutions. Vinegar can be damaging to some tile materials avoid if you have marble, slate, granite, or stone tiles.

    How To Whiten Grout

Even after a comprehensive clean using chemical and natural cleaning agents, its common for white grout to still appear stained, damaged and cracked particularly after the removal of black mould. While the repeated use of bleach, vinegar or baking soda should eventually yield results when it comes to whitening, once all mould has been removed, there are easy methods of getting your grout to gleam again.

In recent years, the practice of painting your grout with a special grout paint has become increasingly popular. This grout paint, or ink as it is sometimes known, is designed not only to paint over stained areas of grout, instantly improving the aesthetic of any tiled room, it also helps to prevent mould from returning thanks to anti-fungal and water-resistant properties.

Ideal for tiled floors and large tiled walls, applying grout paint is a simple process and can restore the original look of your grout in no time. Before painting, it is vital to thoroughly clean your tiles and grout, ensuring no mould or mildew remains attached. Using masking tape to prevent paint overlapping onto your tiles, apply the paint using a bush almost exactly the width of the grout line itself. If your brush is too small, youll end up creating more work for yourself, but if its too large, you run the risk of splattering paint on the tiles.

  • Mop your ceramic tiled floor at least once a week with very hot water.
  • Wipe up any food or drink spillages as quickly as possible to avoid them settling, and ideally, wipe the surface with an antimicrobial cloth afterwards.

How To Clean Mold Off Bathroom Walls

Similar to cleaning mold from bathroom ceilings, you can clean mold off walls with soap and water or vinegar in a spray bottle. If you have scrubbable painted walls, you can apply the vinegar directly to the mold and scrub it away. Allow the area to dry, then cover it with a stain-blocking paint. If you have tiled bathroom walls, follow our cleaning instructions in the following section.

If the mold has infiltrated the drywall or spread across the entire wall, it will be difficult to remove it yourself. Hire a professional to remove the mold instead. Disturbing that much mold could pose a health hazard and cause it to spread to other areas of your home.

    Clean Mold Off Silicone Caulking

A second option is to clean the mold off of the caulking. This is only recommended if the mold is very limited in size and growth. I would say anything that is less than five or six inches in length can be cleaned, then monitored to see if the mold comes back. If it does come back I would remove the silicone caulking and replace it with fresh caulking.

When you replace the caulking you should investigate the type of caulking you use. There are some new brands of caulking that are mold resistant or are treated with a chemical that kills mold. As always if you are not comfortable doing the job yourself that has experience in removal and or working with mold. They will often know how to control the issue, remediate it and fix the ongoing issue that caused the mold.

Mold, and its early-stage counterpart, mildew, are forms of fungi that grow in damp areas and replicate quickly. Mold and mildew can cause allergies and respiratory conditions, and sometimes more serious health problems that affect the nervous system. Therefore, you need to get rid of mold and mildew quickly. Bathroom surfaces, particularly tile around the tub and shower, tend to be mold and mildew incubators because of the heat and moisture that accumulate there. But you can usually remove the unwanted substances easily using white vinegar in combination with baking soda as a scouring agent.

  • Fill a small spray bottle with white vinegar.

  • Spray the affected areas — including tile, grout, painted walls, and any porcelain or ceramic surfaces — liberally with vinegar. Let it sit for one to two hours.

  • Scrub the mold and mildew away with a damp microfiber cloth. Scrub tiling grout or hard-to-reach corners and crevices with a stiff-bristle toothbrush. Rinse with water.

  • Make a paste of 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water. Apply the paste to any hard-to-remove traces of mildew or mold. Spray with vinegar, and scrub with a damp microfiber cloth, scouring pad or stiff-bristle toothbrush, depending on the severity of the mold or mildew.

And Product : Bleach And Paper Towel

The next type of area that might get black mold is in the shower at the base of the tub and the silicone sealant or caulking. It is very common to find black mold in this area, especially if not diligent in cleaning the area.

Again normal bathroom and shower cleaning agents wont do a good job after the fact, but if used before the black mold develops it will keep the area clean.

For this area, the gel didnt work as well, I tried that first. So I went for the cheaper method.

Begin by pouring some bleach in a container, I am just using my old Rubbermaid Tupperware type container. Then make sure to wear gloves, take a sheet of paper towel and fold it lengthwise, then dip it in the bleach completely.

Ring it out a little bit so it is not dripping like crazy.

Apply the bleached-soaked paper towel to the base where the black mold is. Press it in really well and tight. If you have tough hard water or mildew stains on the top of the tub you can try it on there as well. However, it may be prone to removing the finish. I havent run into that problem yet, but it may happen.

Then let it sit for 1 hour to even overnight. Really tough stains will take longer. You can always reapply after as well.

This did a great job. I wound up doing a few applications and let it sit overnight. Just needs another round and it should be perfect.

Option 1: Use hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to clean the shower. Be sure to wear gloves and a protective mask so you dont breathe in the spores. Mix some baking soda with water to create a paste and apply to the affected area of pink or black mildew. Then spray some peroxide over the paste. Finally, scrub with a brush and rinse with water. Repeat if necessary.

Option 2: Use distilled white vinegar. This is a natural product and usually doesnt cause the grout to discolor or fall apart. Use a spray bottle to soak the mildew area with vinegar. Let it sit for about 30 minutes and then scrub if necessary. Rinse with warm water and wipe the shower dry.

Option 3: Use chlorine bleach. You will need to make sure the area is well ventilated and wear a mask when working with bleach. If you have colored grout, do not use this option. Using a spray bottle with 1 part bleach to 2 parts water, spray the black, orange or pink mildew. Let the bleach sit for at least 30 minutes and then carefully scrub with a brush. They usually come in a spray bottle and require the solution to sit on the area for a specified amount of time. As with bleach, be sure to use protective gear when working with chemicals to clean black, pink, and orange mildew.
