How Do I Treat Black Mold

Dangerous Mold Vs Mildew

How to cure black mould forever!

The most common type of mold found in homes is mildew. Mildew is a surface mold that grows in warm, damp places like your bathroom and on fabrics and books stored in damp basements. Mildew begins as a gray or white powdery colony. It will turn black or brown if not removed promptly and often looks like soil accumulation. To test if the surface is covered with mildew or just dirt, dab the stain with a cotton swab dipped in household chlorine bleach. If the stain lightens or disappears after two or three minutes, it’s mildew. If not, it’s probably just dirt.

If you detect a musty odor anywhere in your home, then you have a high concentration of mold. It can be coming from a hamper filled with damp towels, from a damp crawlspace under your home, or carpets that have mold growing in the padding. If you smell that odor, it’s definitely time to take action to get rid of the problem.

All mildew is mold, but not all molds are mildew. Mildew can discolor and slowly harm surfaces but there are much more dangerous molds that can damage the structure of your home. If you see a black or green mold that is fuzzy or slimy and the drywall or wood underneath is soft or crumbly, there is irreversible rot, and the mold and the damaged surfaces must be removed immediately.

How To Kill Mould And Clean It

Bleach Often Overlooked these days, but I bet your mum would have reached for this first a lot of the time. Mix 1 Part good quality bleach to 4 parts of water. As advised on many Council websites, mould cannot survive bleach but be careful on painted surfaces as bleach can damage colours. Cheap and cheerful, but not the fastest to use.

Mould and Mildew Quite a few cleaning agent companies like Dettol are doing a product like this these days, good for targeting bathroom grout and fiddly areas. The bleaching agent is very good at removing the black staining created by the mould on tile grout etc. and it can be picked up from most supermarkets. Very good, but not as powerful and easy as HG Mould below.

Specialist cleaning products Many specialist mould cleaning products are available if you have particularly heavy deposits of mould, one such product is HG Mould Spray that Ive used myself and recommended to landlords and tenants . Super easy and fast, but hard to find in shops or DIY chains.

Anti bacterial sprays This gets an honorable mention. The same effective mould killing property of bleach based products, but without the stain removal. It will kill the mould but may not get rid of the black staining left behind in something like tile grout unfortunately.

How Does Black Mold Get Inside A House

Mold spores find their way inside by hitchhiking on clothes, pet fur, and air currents into your home. But spores cant get comfortable without plenty of water. This is why youll usually find black mold around water-damaged areas impacted by plumbing issues like floods or leaky pipes.

Materials like drywall, carpet, or gypsum board can soak up water, creating a perfect home for a black mold colony. If you find water damage at home, its crucial to remove all the affected materials to prevent mold from growing.

Don’t Miss: How To Check For Mold In The Air

Prepare Yourself And The Area

Before dealing with the mold, you need to prep the area and make sure you are protected while cleaning to avoid inhaling the mold or allowing it to spread.

Start with these steps:

  • Wear a respirator mask to protect against spores.
  • Wear as much clothing as you need to cover your skin. Disposable coveralls are a good way to ensure black mold does not attach to your clothing after you’ve removed them. If you don’t have any, pop your clothes into the wash once you are finished.
  • Wear safety goggles and rubber gloves.
  • Once you are adequately dressed, turn off your air conditioner, heater, or central air system. You don’t want air moving while you are removing black mold.
  • Seal any doorways in the room to stop mold spores from traveling while you are working.
  • Use an exhaust fan near outdoor openings to move airborne spores out of your home.
  • Check the area for moisture. If there is none, spray the mold with water to stop mold spores from going airborne.

What is the safest way to get rid of black mold by myself ...

Depending on the size of the black mold growth, you can try removing it yourself. For small growths, there are several home remedies to clean them. Here are the steps:

    • Remove all the contaminated stuff. Black mold grows easily, so you need to remove all objects that may make the mold grow again. Make sure to wrap them tightly in plastic, to prevent the mold spores from growing and spreading.
    • Prepare proper cleaning tools. You need a mask, gloves, and goggles. Make sure to dispose of all of them after the cleaning. Again, you need to wrap them tightly with plastic, before discarding the objects.
    • Make sure there is enough ventilation in the attic. Poor ventilation will make you get exposed to flying spores that cannot get out.
    • Mix some detergent with warm water until foamy. Use this mixture to scrub the moldy surface as hard as you can. This solution is perfect for nonporous materials, and not ideal for wood.
    • Detergent does not work? Add a half tablespoon of baking soda into the water in a medium-sized spray bottle . Shake the bottle and spray the mixture to the moldy surface. Scrub the mold clean before spraying again. This time, let the mixture to dry by itself.
    • Discard all the tools you use for cleaning . Wrap them in plastic before throwing them out. This is to prevent mold spores from flying around.

    Which Respirator To Use

The type of respirator used should be dependent upon the amount of mold in the area you are cleaning. For example, if there is only a small amount of mold, a respirator that only covers the nose and mouth should be sufficient. This type of respirator can be found in most stores. However, if theres a heavier amount of mold, a half or full face respirator should be used. Again, depending on the amount of mold you are having to remove, disposable clothing may be worn to prevent mold spores from landing on your clothes.

When removing black mold, remember to use caution and follow all gathered tips for selecting the proper protective gear for your situation.

    Know Your Mold And Mildew

Mold can grow in your home wherever theres an abundance of moisture, especially when its allowed to remain for extended periods of time. Mold usually appears on walls, ceilings and floors of homes where moisture management is not at its best. In particular, basements, shower walls and windowsills are areas where mold commonly likes to live. Mold and mildew, for all intents and purposes, are essentially the same thing mildew is generically used to describe many minor mold problems in the home, such as on shower tile grout. However, some molds can become highly toxic to people if left to prosper. Mold can cause allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complications, and is especially a risk for small children, the elderly and those with existing respiratory illnesses or weakened immune systems. Mold can appear in many shapes and colors, none of which accurately determines the actual species of mold. However, it does commonly present itself in various tints of black, white, green or blue, and in many combinations of these and other colors.

Natural Ways To Clean Mold Off Of Carpet

There are natural ways to remove and clean black mold from carpet and they can be very useful if you prefer avoiding chemicals, As we discuss three natural options, keep in mind that they may or may not be ideal depending on your rug and mold situation.

  • Hydrogen peroxide. This is not a good solution if you are trying to kill black mold on carpets and colored rugs. Thats because peroxide will bleach out many materials. If you are working with white or extremely light carpets, this could be a good option. Use a spray bottle filled with peroxide and spray the molded area until it is thoroughly saturated. After about 10-15 minutes, use a brush to scrub the carpet and finally blot with a towel.
  • Baking soda. This is a good option if you have children or pets because baking soda is non-toxic. In addition to cleaning up the issue, it will also deodorize the rug. Make sure you are mixing baking soda with water so it can thoroughly saturate the carpet and reach all sources of mold. A general measurement is about one tablespoon per spray bottle of water. Spray the area then scrub with a brush. Since baking soda is safe, you can also use it diluted or in powder form regularly on the carpet for prevention of the problem too.

Tackling The Underlying Cause Of Mold

Molds are all around us we breathe in their spores every day. Its impossible to prevent mold from entering any property, but steps can be taken to stop mold from finding a new home in your house. Without addressing the underlying cause of why mold is growing in a particular area, it will just keep coming back.

Molds only need two things, food and damp. Its impossible to remove the food mold needs from your home, because your property is made of it. Particle board, gypsum, wooden framing, and soft furnishings can all nourish and sustain large mold colonies. What you can control, however, is damp. When mold is discovered, look for the underlying source of water.

There are three common ways that water can cause problem mold growths:

    • Maintenance issues such as leaking pipes or failed window seals
    • Human error, for example not drying water in shower door tracks or splashing water around a sink
    • Construction-related, usually relating to ongoing condensation issues caused by poor airflow

The first two are easy to resolve. Simply repair the problem or change your habits to be more conscious of where water is splashing and pooling. If mold is growing because of the construction of your property, it may require more extensive intervention. Installing fans or vents, replacing portable heaters, or investing in a dehumidifier might be necessary to resolve the problem.

    The Path Of Resistance

Initially, Mikes landlord tried to fix the problem himself, bleaching the moldy walls. We call that spray n’ pray, said Scott Armour of the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification, a global industry body for remediators. They, along with the EPA, advise against bleach for a variety of reasons, namely that fumes can be dangerous and its usually ineffective.

Bleach only works for non-porous surfaces. It cant touch the mold that has burrowed into surfaces like wood or drywall . But the most important reason bleach fails is that people dont stop the molds water supply.

First thing I do is check for leaks, in the bathroom or roof or a crack in the foundation, said Greg Bukowski, who runs the Chicago-based remediation company Moldman USA. Theres always a leak. If you dont fix that, dont bother with bleach or vinegar. Then kill and remove the mold with detergent and water, then prevent its return with mold-resistant paint like Kilz .

When bleach didnt work, Mike paid for an indoor airborne mold test, which raised more questions than it answered. We had no idea how to interpret the results. I just couldnt find any information out there that isnt written by remediation guys, he said. They told him he had the dreaded black mold, and needed professional remediation.
