Do You Have Mold In Your Bathroom Heres How To Clean It Up

Help! Theres mold in my bathroom shower that wont go away no matter how much I scrub at ithow do I get rid of it?!

We hear this question all the time and its nothing to be ashamed of. It is common to find mold growth in showers, sinks, and other high-moisture areas. Mold flourishes in certain environments, and your shower is most certainly one of them. Luckily, there are some things you can do to combat mold using basic household cleaning products.

No matter what you do, DONT scrape mold with your fingers or scrub it dry with a brush as this will cause living mold spores to fly up in the air where theyll find somewhere else to land, thrive, and give you additional headaches.

Cover The Solution With The Plastic Wrap

The plastic wrap is meant to hold the moisture within the cleaning solution to allow it to work. You should cover the area with the solution for between 10 to 15 minutes for the best results.

After this period of time, you can remove the plastic wrap and observe the results. The expectation is that youll see a sparkling clean silicone.

If thats not the case, youll then need to use the spray bottle to spray some bleach at the meeting point between the silicone and the wall and wait for a few minutes. You should get the results you desire in a short while.

You can repeat this last stage as many times as you wish until you get the desired results.

Black Mold Is Being Resistant Even Though You Clean It

Even though you clean the black mold, it can be resistant and wont come off the silicone in the shower . In this case, you have no alternative but to use bleach, in some form. Here is a good hack to clean stubborn mold using bleach and baking soda . Since you are using bleach, make sure to wear a mask because of the fumes.

  • In a plastic bowl, mix a little bleach and baking soda until the consistency is a little thicker, like a liquidy paste.
  • Use a disposable paintbrush, dip it in the paste, and brush it on the moldy caulk. Use a good amount, as the more the better. You want the paste to perform its magic in cleaning the caulk.
  • Put plastic wrap over the area you put the paste so it doesnt dry out.
  • Let the paste sit on the moldy caulk for several hours.
  • If the caulk looks clean, that is great!
  • Did the paste dry out? If it did, add bleach to a spray bottle and spray it on the wall above the plastic wrap. Let the water drip down the wall and go under the plastic and it will re-saturate the paste.

    Our Home from Scratch

Black mold removal is important. But first, one must identify that it is black mold. First, look at the color, followed by the smell. Black mold is black or even dark grey in color, and often smells wet and musty, as it usually grows in areas with a lot of moisture. Black mold is also usually noticeable in the home if you experience a burning or scratching sensation in your throat or lungs. Black mold is dangerous, and can greatly affect your health if left untreated, so it’s important to remove it as soon as you’re aware of it.

Before you can begin any black mold treatment, youll need to perform a black mold test and find the source. Its often the result of excess moisture in a particular area. Youre most likely to find black mold in areas of your home that you dont visit as often like the basement, but it can pop up anywhere. Here are a few common moisture sources to look for:

    • Faucets and fixtures. Sink, shower and bathtub faucets and fixtures that are leaking can lead to the growth of black mold over time.
    • Exposed plumbing. Damaged or leaking pipes, especially in warmer temperatures, can often create black mold in areas like basements.
    • Water heaters. A small leak can create black mold in your basement or water heater closet.

How To Eradicate Mold Spores Present In The Air After Cleaning

The best way to eradicate the mold spores from your indoor air is to open up the windows or doors. By encouraging the airflow, you can suppress the chances of inhaling mold spores.

Use appliances that support ventilation, such as ACs and fans. Apart from that, you can also use mold-killing sprays to clean the air. For more knowledge on cleaning the mold spores from the air, refer to these methods.

What Causes Mold In The Shower

Moisture and humidity are the two main causes of mold growth. Unfortunately, bathrooms are constantly moist. The water from the sink, toilet, and shower increases the risk of mold growth.

Taking a hot shower raises the humidity in the room. The increased humidity also encourages the development of mold spores.

Mold tends to grow in the areas that remain moist, such as:

    • Shower curtains
    • Corners and crevasses
    • Areas around fixtures and drains

Caulk and grout are also prone to mold growth. Caulk has a rubbery texture that is difficult to wipe clean while grout is porous, allowing mold spores to grow below the surface.

How To Remove Mold From Shower Curtains

Shower curtains made from plastic or PEVA often stay damp for long periods of time and thus, mold loves to grow there.

Luckily, it is reasonably easy to get rid of:

Method 1: Baking Soda + Vinegar

  • Remove the shower curtain
  • Throw it into your washing machine along with some bath towels they stop it from crinkling and actually act like scrubbing sponges
  • Add 1/2 a cup of baking soda and your normal laundry detergent and start the cycle
  • When the washing machine gets to the rinse cycle, add 1/2 a cup of vinegar
  • Hang the curtain out on the line to dry
  • If you find that you still have some mold on your shower curtain, then you can try again. Because the curtain is made of plastic and blocks water, it may simply have been because the solution did not really get on to all parts of the curtain.

If you have tried this method a couple of times , then move on to the bleach method.

    Method 2: Bleach

  • Once again, put the curtain into your washing machine with some bath towels
  • Grab a bucket and mix up a solution of 1/2 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup of your normal laundry detergent
  • Fill the rest of the bucket with water but do NOT add it to the washing machine yet.
  • Start the wash cycle and once the washing machine has filled with water add your bleach solution
  • When the cycle is finished, hang the curtain out on the line
  • You may need to do this twice to make sure the curtain is fully clean.
