  • Natural Green Mold Cleaning Agents

Over the last few years the mold industry has seen the emergence of natural, green cleaners. This is not surprising as the increased awareness of health and wellness has led to the popularity of natural alternatives. Most of the natural cleaning agents that are designed to remove mold contain thyme oil which is derived from the leaves of the thyme herb.

Our favorite of the natural cleaners is Benefect. The main ingredient is thyme sourced from farms in Europe. Benefect is very effective at killing mold and it leaves behind a pleasant thyme smell. Unfortunately, natural cleaners like Benefect do not remove those ugly mold stains after treatment.

Cleaning Mold Naturally with Vinegar, Baking Soda, or Soap and Water

Did you know that you can clean mold with natural cleaners you already have around the house? Products such as vinegar, baking soda, or soap and water can effectively clean mold. They are a safe and cheap alternative to store-bought mold treatments. But do we recommend them? The answer is: not really. We think these solutions require more work to mix, apply and scrub. Additionally, they do not remove mold stains. We like to keep things as quick and easy as possible.

Use Oxygenated Bleach To Clean Moldy Areas Without Discoloration

Though we briefly touched on the fantastic qualities of using oxygenated bleach in a steam cleaner, using a cleaner like OxiClean is another excellent way to remove black mold. Similar to how bleach works, OxiClean disinfects and eliminates odors, which is why it appears in most laundry solutions.

The added benefit of using oxygen bleach, however, is that there is no worry of actually bleaching the clothes. It does not use whitening agents, and therefore will leave the color intact.

DIY Oxygen Bleach Mold and Mildew Scrub

    • 2 gallons of hot water
    • 2 cups of powdered oxygen bleach
    • 1/4 cup liquid dish soap

Start by combining the ingredients in a large bucket. Ensure the materials thoroughly blend before using them to clean. Let the solution soak on the tiles, carpet, or whatever surface you are using, for approximately 15 minutes.

Scrub with a bristle brush, then rinse thoroughly with warm water. This recipe works exceptionally well on larger areas, and can even work as a homemade algae remover for your deck or patio.

Who else recommends it? Bob Vila and MSN both picked RMR-141 Disinfectant.

What do buyers say? 89% of 8,900+ Amazon reviewers rated this product 4 stars or above.

RMR-141 Disinfectant and Cleaner is our top pick because it works on nearly any surface, making it an excellent product for the price. It’s easy to stop mold and mildew growth with this powerful, effective formula that comes in spray bottle or jug form. Spray and wipe for a quick clean or deep clean a large area with the gallon size.

This is an EPA-registered mildew spray, which means it’s a chemical agent capable of inhibiting the growth of mildew. RMR-141 disinfectant has proven effective against 141 different microorganisms and will kill mold, mildew, bacteria, and more. Its claim to fame is its ability to clean, disinfect, and deodorize any surface with its active ingredient, ammonium.

Keep in mind that this mold remover is explicitly designed to kill mold and mildew fungus that may be growing on the surface level. However, it is not a mold stain remover. If months or years of mold and mildew build-up have left behind black or green staining, you may need to use a separate product to remove the discoloration. After removing the staining, use this product to clean the surface and prevent future growth.

Why Do I Use Enzymatic Cleaners

Enzymatic cleaners are all the rage right now, but they havent always been.

House cleaning is something we all have to do, and when we have kids, the messes can get real. Unfortunately, many conventional cleaning products contain ingredients that are toxic to touch or breathe in.

I didnt think much about that before having kids, but once I became a mom, I got laser-focused on making healthier choices for my family. That meant looking at our cleaning schedule and the products we were using around our kids.

If youre in the same boat just looking for ways to make your home safer and healthier for your family, youll definitely want to take a look at your favorite cleaning products. Choosing safer cleaners is one easy swap to make in your home.

What Do Mold Professionals Use To Kill Mold?

After allowing the enzyme cleaner to sit on the surfaces for a while, wipe the surface using a clean, dry cloth. The recommendation for this, though, is a microfiber cloth.

A microfiber cloth will effectively remove dirt, grime, mold, and mildew from your surfaces without scratching or damaging them.

Proceed to rinse the surface with clean water after wiping the enzyme cleaner off it. This will help eliminate any residue left behind, leaving you with a sparkling, spotless feeling.

If the result is not yet as great as you would want it to be, you can repeat the process beginning from step 2.

Use Bleach To Kill Mold On Lighter Surfaces

When you want to kill black mold that has been growing on white or light-colored surfaces, bleach is a beautiful way to accomplish the task. Bleach is another fungicide that is perfect for removing mold from tiles, toilets, and bathtubs. When using this option, you always want to allow for an appropriate amount of ventilation to filter toxic fumes out of the room.

Do this by opening a window or turning on the exhaust fan. You also want to ensure you are wearing gloves and proper protective equipment to protect your face and skin from irritation.

For every cup of bleach you use, add a gallon of water. Scrub the area using a sponge or bristle brush. Be careful not to combine the bleach with any other solutions.

You do not have to rinse the bleach away when you are finished unless it is an area where food is prepared. The bleach solution will continue to protect the cleaning surface from mold growth moving forward.

    Do Enzyme Cleaners Kill Germs

No, enzyme cleaners are not certified to kill germs. They can eliminate odors and get rid of stains, but they are not disinfectants. Youll need to supplement with bleach or another disinfectant if you want to be 100% certain the germs are killed. While non-toxic, natural enzymatic cleaners have many practical uses in the home, killing bacteria and viruses is not one of them.

Types Of Enzymatic Cleaners You Should Be Aware Of

Enzyme cleaners often come in different classifications. The first classification is the amylases. This enzyme-based cleaner is ideal for removing starchy spots or stains from surfaces.

If youve got such stains on your surfaces, you can use this category of enzyme cleaners to get rid of them.

The next category is lipases. These enzyme cleaners effectively break down oil and grease so you can remove them quickly.

Instead of wasting your time trying to remove oily stains from any surface at home using other chemical formulas, you can get an enzyme cleaner in this category and work with it.

Another type of enzyme cleaner you should know about is proteases. This enzyme cleaner is ideal for removing tough protein spots, for example, blood, food debris, and many others.

The protease enzyme cleaners work very effectively when used on this type of stain.

Each of these categories of enzyme cleaners can either be in powder form or liquid form. Knowing these classifications, you can then go on to decide the exact type you need at any given time.

Try Steam Cleaning For Killing Black Mold

    Molderizer Non

Another excellent way to kill black mold in carpets or floor tiles is to use a steam cleaner. The high temperatures used to produce steam in the cleaners kills the majority of bacteria and molds that are harmful to homeowners. These molds include black mold, which dissolves in double time by using a strong carpet shampoo when cleaning.

DIY Homemade Carpet Shampoo to Kill Mold

    • 2 tbsp of liquid laundry detergent
    • ¼ cup of all-purpose liquid cleaner
    • ¼ cup of oxygen bleach
    • 1 tsp of fabric softener
    • 1 gallon of hot water

Depending on the type of machine you have, you can either place the cleaner directly onto the carpet or add it to the steam cleaners reservoir. This reservoir is designed to hold cleaning solutions and distribute them evenly across the carpet.

If you are applying the detergent by hand, use a soft cloth or even a bristle brush to scrub the surface of the floor. This cleaning solution also works on tile floors, using a scrub brush to work in between the tiles and clean the grout.

    Does Enzyme Cleaner Kill Coronavirus

No, enzymatic cleaners do not have disinfecting properties, so they cant kill viruses like the coronavirus. To fully kill viruses like the coronavirus, you need to use a proper disinfectant like Lysol spray or Clorox disinfecting wipes.

When you use these products, start by cleaning the surface and then make sure to read the label and use the products accordingly. Some products need to remain wet on the surface for a few minutes to be effective and you may need to spray multiple times.

If you cant get your hands on any Lysol or Clorox, you can make your own disinfectant at home by mixing a half a cup of bleach with a gallon of water. Your homemade disinfectant can be used to disinfect hard, non-porous surfaces in your home.

How To Kill House Mold With Enzymes

Mold grows best in dark damp areas like basements and thrives by absorbing minerals, sugars, and water from things such as plants, soil or decaying matter. Enzymes work much in the same way. Enzymes are microscopic molecules that work together to break down organic material such as mold. When applying enzymes to house mold, the enzymes literally eat away at the mold and cause the materials the mold needs to survive to waste away.

  • Look at all areas of the house where mold is thriving to locate the source of its existence.

  • Remove the cause of the mold and rid the area of any moisture problems. This may mean fixing a leaky pipe or tending to a crack in the wall or roof. Before killing mold that is already present, you must remove its life source.

  • Put on goggles, a facemask and rubber gloves for protection from contact with the mold.

  • Spray enzyme cleaner directly on all areas affected with mold. Do not scrub or rinse, simply allow it to air dry. While it is drying, the enzymes will work to eat away at the mold.

  • Inspect the areas you treat with the enzyme cleaner after 24 hours to make sure you did not miss any spots. If you did, repeat the process on the newly discovered areas.

    • Read the instruction on the enzyme cleaning solution before using.
    • Work in a well-ventilated area.

    Do Enzymatic Cleaners Actually Work

How to remove and kill mold – Bleach vs vinegar

Yes, enzymatic cleaners often outperform conventional cleaners on stains from food, blood, urine, grease, oil as well as other organic and inorganic stains. I cant forget to mention red wine the Naturally Its Clean carpet cleaner saved our carpet from a half a bottle of red wine that my dear husband spilled on our light brown carpet.

The enzymes given off by bacteria speed up the breakdown of substances on a molecular level. This allows the bacteria to metabolize/ eat the substances pretty much right in front of your eyes . That translates into easy to clean up.

Im so glad we didnt resort to a conventional cleaner when he dropped the bottle of red wine. Surfactants often spread stains because they allow water into fabrics with the idea that the water will take the stain molecules to the acidic, caustic or petrochemical cleaning solution. While this can work, one often-reported side effect of using a conventional cleaning solution is they tend to spread the stain and cause fabric discoloration.

    Using Enzyme Cleaners At Home

Enzyme cleaners have many uses. One of the uses theyre most well-known for is getting rid of pet stains and odors. They are also effective on laundry odors, clothing stains and even unclogging your bathroom drain.

You can use an enzyme cleaner to clean your carpet if it gets stained with blood, wine, pee or any other natural occurring stain. Washing your kitchen floors or other hard surfaces in your house is also possible with enzyme cleaners.

    How Do Enzymatic Cleaners Work

From basic science class, you know that enzymes are biological molecules. Keep in mind that enzymes arent alive but are by-products of organisms. They speed up or serve as catalysts for chemical reactions.

In the case of enzyme cleaners, they facilitate the breakdown of various materials. Waste, dirt, stains, and even molds are broken down into smaller, harmless molecules. These molecules are either washed away or consumed by bacteria.

There are four major types of enzymes used in cleaning products:

  • Proteases shatter proteins found in organic wastes such as blood and feces.

  • Amylase converts starch in foods into simple sugars

  • Cellulase breaks down the cellulose in fabric.

  • Lipases dissolve fat molecules in oil and grease.

What Kills Mold A List Of Effective Household Cleaners

Trying to clean up mold in your home? Heres what can kill it.

While a severe mold problem is best left to the professionals, you may opt to tackle a smaller mold cleanup yourself.

After youve fixed the moisture issue and dried the area completely, heres a list of household products that can help you kill and remove mold.

    Does Bleach Kill Mold?

Yes, bleach is a potent biocide that can be used to kill mold.

The active ingredient in bleach, sodium hypochlorite, reacts with water to form hypochlorous acid, which kills mold by denaturing proteins, inactivating enzymes, disrupting nucleic acids, and destroying other cellular components.

Because bleach requires direct contact to kill mold, its most effective at killing mold on the surface of nonporous surfaces like tiles and sinks. Its not as effective at killing mold on porous materials , which absorb moisture and allow mold to penetrate underneath the surface.

When using bleach, the CDC recommends using a diluted solution of no more than 1 cup of household bleach mixed in with 1 gallon of water. Never mix bleach with ammonia-based cleaners, which can react to produce toxic fumes.

  • Apply the diluted bleach solution to the moldy surface
  • Let it sit for 15 minutes
  • Scrub off the mold
  • Dry the surface thoroughly
  • Does Vinegar Kill Mold?

Yes, vinegar is a mild acid that kills 82% of mold species. Its often used as a natural and nontoxic alternative to cleaning chemicals when it comes to killing household mold.

  • Let it sit for 1 hour
