How To Prevent Mold Under Rv Mattress

The Best Mold Resistant Mattress

RVing: Preventing Mildew & Mold Under Your Foam Mattress. (cheaper hypervent)

Any mattress can get mold. While there are some types of materials that are more mold resistant than others, any mattress can get mold if you arent practicing good mold prevention.

Typically all natural latex, wool, and rubberized coconut fiber are the best materials to use in a mattress to resist mold growth. Mattresses with coils and springs also help prevent mold as they give the mattress a layer of breathability.

There are even a couple of mattresses that have an activated charcoal layer in them to further help resistant moisture and prevent mold growth.

Lets take a look at the specific moldresistant mattresses and mattress toppers I recommend.

Moisture Barrier Under Your Mattress

This is the best tip to help prevent mold under your mattress. The issue with an RV mattress is there is nowhere for moisture to go between your mattress and the wooden platform. Air and moisture can get stuck and cause major mold issues. Not a pretty sight when you turn that mattress over and realize you’ve been sleeping with mold growing underneath it. This seems to be a very common issue and through lots of research we discovered the Hypervent Aire-Flow Moisture Barrier. It was a game-changer! It’s not terribly expensive, for a standard RV Queen it runs around $90.00. It is sold by the linear foot, so you have to find out how much you need but even adding pieces of it under your mattress will help raise the mattress off of the platform so air can flow freely through. This is a great video that helped us determine it was the best option for us.

How To Pick A Mold

Check materials and construction. Mattresses that have coils inside typically are more resistant to moisture buildup and have better airflow. Natural materials, such as latex, are thought to be immune to mold as well, so we recommend that you purchase a latex mattress or a model with 1 or 2 latex layers.

Vanlife: How To Prevent Mold Under Your Mattress

The best way to prevent moisture under your RV mattress is to tweak the general moisture level in the van. You can do it by improving the ventilation system in your van, or by backing it up with a dehumidifier that will draw the excess moisture from the air.

Its best to keep relative humidity within 30-50%, but you can tweak the numbers according to your preference and depending on the region.

Moisture is a big issue inside RVs, travel trailers, and 5th-wheels. You can run a dehumidifier and do everything you can to keep the humidity down but most people forget about the RV mattress.

Everything else in the camper can be bone dry but you lift up your mattress to find moisture and maybe even mold growing on the mattress and the wood underneath.

Mattresses inside RVs, vans and even rooftop tents are laying on a cold surface. When you sleep on your mattress the warmth from your body heats it up.

Moisture from the air and your body start to condensate between the bottom of the warm mattress and the cold surface its laying on.

If not kept in check you could very quickly end up sleeping on a moldy mattress every night. It will eventually damage the wood under your mattress and could potentially threaten your health.

RV mattress moisture and mold is no small issue. But the good news is you can do things to help stop the condensation and get airflow under your RV mattress.

Create An Insulation Layer

If your traveling route includes mostly regions with moderate humidity, you can prevent mold growth under your RV mattress by insulating the bed frame.

Insulation decreases the difference between the ambient temperature and the temperature on the surface of the plywood. Here are some easy and cheap ways to make it:

  • Cardboard. Cover your bed frame with 1-2 layers of cardboard boxes, and place the mattress on them. This is a quick fix for a relatively new mattress, which may last you for 1-2 months.
  • Mattress topper. You can purchase a foam mattress topper and place it below your mattress as a buffer layer. Note, though, that if the mattress topper becomes infested with mold, it can then transfer it to the mattress, so this is also a fix for 2-3 months.
  • Mattress underlay. These are usually made of hard plastic and have a convoluted structure. If you purchase this underlay, you can make sure that theres always a layer of air between a mattress and the bed base, and the excess moisture will always have the space to escape.

Air Out Your Mattress

RV Life Hack: Stop Moisture & Mold Growth Under RV Mattress

One of the simplest ways to reduce mold growth is to circulate more air underneath your mattress. Begin by removing all bedding and propping the mattress up so that it can receive direct sunlight for several hours.

If you cant move your mattress by yourself, add spacers underneath to prop up one side at a time. You can use almost anything as spacers, such as canned goods, step stools, water bottles, or anything else that will support the weight of your mattress.

If you have a portable fan or a small RV dehumidifier, place it next to your mattress to speed up the process. The length of time youll need to air it out will vary, but you want the underside of the mattress as well as the wooden platform below to be 100 percent dry before you set the mattress back down.
