How To Make Your Own Silicone Mold For Resin

How To Prevent Problems With Silicone Molds

How to Make Your Own Silicone Mold of Agate Resin Coasters
  • No open fire at the Mold. Burning away bubbles is a popular method to get rid of the annoying air bubbles in the resin. But be careful: Avoid any contact with the silicone. Silicone molds can be heated up to 180° Celsius for a short time. A lighter reaches temperatures between 800° and 1300° Celsius so way too much.
  • Mix the resin according to the packaging instructions. Even minimal deviations can cause the resin to become unnecessarily warm and thus cause your mold to age more quickly.
  • Only use colors that are suitable for resin. Acrylic paints can cause the resin to boil and damage your mold.
  • Never clean your silicone molds with sponges or other acidic items.
  • You can use release agents. Release agents will degrade the finish of your resin work, but will help your silicone mold last longer. Our suggestion: Use release agents only for complex shapes that are difficult to mold or if you already notice that the quality of your silicone mold is deteriorating.

Can You Make A Mold Out Of Flour

Knead the flour mixture into the desired shape. Create a permanent mold by pouring the hot mixture onto a cookie sheet. Let it cool and press a cookie cutter into the dough to create an ornament or press your hands into the mixture to make a lasting shape. Let the mold air dry for 24 hours until it hardens.

Let Cure And Remove The Object

After my mold was done curing, I used a popsicle stick and a spoon to pry it out of the container. The good news is that this silicone cures really well. It was very tough and strong. The bad news is that that meant I couldnt easily get my succulent out of the silicone. I didnt leave enough of an opening at the top.

Heres what I did. First I cut off the corners to hopefully give me more leverage to pop the succulent out. No dice. So I decided to pry the succulent out. Its a good thing I wasnt keen on keeping the succulent, because I ended up pulling some leaves off in the process. Oops! Definitely leave a bigger opening than I did!!

How To Mold Silicone Two

Make Your Own Silicone Mold From Caulking & Dish Soap ...

With two-part molds, various objects can be produced that are of particular interest to model makers. This way you can not only cast works of art in epoxy resin, but also parts of different materials and of different sizes. The molds can be used, for example, for plaster and concrete but of course also for resin. The concrete or gypsum parts can be painted and decorated afterwards, so that you get gates, bridge pillars or house facades in this way. If you work with epoxy resin, you can create beautiful voluminous objects with two-part molds, in which you can embed various objects, such as dried leaves and flowers.

In addition to the materials mentioned above, you will need some modelling clay. You press this into the frame so that it is half filled. Make sure that the corners are well lined and the surface smoothed.

Now press the blank halfway into the plasticine and fill the mold with the silicone rubber. Allow the material to harden and then remove both the silicone mold and the plasticine. However, the finished mold will immediately be put back into the frame, because it will be used a second time.

Place your blank exactly in the recess. Now coat the mold with Vaseline so that both halves of the mold can be easily separated later. In the last step, pour liquid silicone into the frame once more and let it harden again.

How To Make Resin Molds Some Considerations Before You Start

Before you start casting the mold, you should think about your project. For example, the choice of the right silicone mass depends on the nature of the blank. The following considerations should be made in advance:

  • What is the surface of the blank like? Is it very smooth or does it have grooves, edges or ornaments? This is important in order to decide on the optimum hardness of the silicone. If the surface of the blank is irregular, you should use a soft Sillkon so that the resin casting can be removed from the mold later. With a simpler blank, a silicone with a higher degree of hardness also works.
  • How big and heavy is the blank? With which material should the mold later be poured? These considerations are also important when choosing the right degree of hardness. If you have prematurely decided on a soft material, problems with the stability during the subsequent pouring of the mold are quite possible.

In order to be able to make silicone molds yourself, it does not necessarily have to be the expensive special silicone. It is also possible to use bathroom silicone, which is much cheaper to buy. Especially for beginners it offers itself to reach to this economical alternative. So you dont get annoyed about unsuccessful, expensive attempts. When using bathroom silicone, however, you should be aware that you can only use it to make simple silicone molds. Filigree, detailed illustrations will not work.

WARM TIPS FOR SILICONE RESIN MOLDS:

  • Always keep your casting molds clean. Before every use check that the surface is smooth and has no cracks.
  • 2. Always wait till the piece is fully cured before de-molding. Even if the epoxy or cement needs only 10-25 min to set, it doesnt mean the project is ready to leave the mold. Wait for 24 hours!

    3. When de-molding, you can use a resin release spray and let it dry in the silicone mold to help extend the life of your molds. If you dont have it, you can use a baby wipe or a drop of soap water as a release agent, then work your way down to the silicone resin mold and push the project from the bottom.

    4. Clean the silicone molds with soapy water or rubbing alcohol when necessary, then wipe dry with a soft cloth. Dont soak them.

    5. Keep the resin silicone mold away from direct sunlight, dust, and fire. Some silicone molds are freeze and microwave-resistant.

    Negative Forms With Original Shape

If you would like to produce a duplicate of an object, the best way to do so is to make a negative mold with an original shape. For this purpose, you usually need a frame so that the silicone, which is later poured in for molding, cannot spread out uncontrollably. You can, but do not necessarily have to build a frame yourself. Empty plastic packaging is also suitable for this.

However, if you do want to do it yourself, you should build the frame according to the dimensions of the object to be duplicated so that you do not waste silicone unnecessarily. This is quite expensive and it is annoying if too much of it is lost. It is essential that the frame is tight so that the silicone cannot escape, or flow into cracks or under the edges. Now put the blank into the frame.

After preparing the silicone, following the manufacturers instructions, pour it into the frame. Make sure that the mass is evenly distributed everywhere. Now the silicone hardens and can be easily removed from the frame.

Make Your Own Silicone Mold The Frame Construction

    • Concentrate on building the frame first. This should completely enclose the object you want to duplicate and be as tight as possible to prevent silicone from passing through. Use a smooth base plate, but no glass. Silicone rubber does not repel glass, so removing it can be a real nuisance. It is therefore also advisable to use smooth wood for the base plate.
    • The base plate is enclosed by four smooth side walls. For these you can also use smooth planed wood or MDF boards. The walls should be about ten millimetres higher than your object. Seal the joints of the mold as far as possible. You can use modelling clay for this. To smooth the joints, use a toothpick or cotton swab.
    • Place your object in the frame with the side to be modelled facing upwards and fix it to the floor, ideally with hot glue, strong double-sided adhesive tape is also possible. The object must not slip under any circumstances when filling the silicone mass. Now the silicone mass is mixed.
