Mould On Kitchen Items

Cabinets Around the House : How to Remove Mold From Wood Cabinets

Sometimes mould start to grow in the form of a very fine film on stored items of kitchen ware. This indicates that items were most likely improperly dried before storage and also that the cupboard has very poor ventilation. If you detect mould on your kitchen items you need to wash them thoroughly. There is no need to use strong chemicals just normal detergent liquid is sufficient. Never use bleach or other strong chemicals on items that will come into contact with food. If your items are dry and stored in dry cupboard there is no chance of mould getting onto them.

Question Re: Dealing With Mold Behind Backsplash

My husband and I are taking out the last of our kitchen cabs and sink tonight, and the new cabs are to be installed on Thursday.

In taking off the old formica backsplash that is right above/behind the kitchen sink there was a LOT of mold. The backsplash always had a gap there between it and the wall . We actually took the backsplash off a couple of weeks ago, and are doing the last removal now so we can repair the walls and paint before cabs arrive later this week.

When I first found the mold I sprayed and washed over it with bleach for a couple of days. There is only a little bit that needs washing now – actually, I don’t know if what is left is active mold, or leftover mold stains.

Question: how do we insure the mold problem is “dealt with”, and that we can safely repair the wall area and move on?

Washing with bleach water, letting dry out – is that enough?

I Thank You,

Locate The Source Of The Problem

To keep mold from occurring again inside your kitchen cabinet, it is important to find the cause of the moisture problem. The source of the moisture could be anything from your leaking pipe or dishwasher. Fix the leaks immediately. In some cases, it might be a cause of water seeping under the sink then dripping to the cabinet. If the cause of mold growth in your kitchen cabinet is due to a leaking sink, you might need to remove the entire kitchen sink to reach the areas where mold is growing.

Damp/ Mold Behind Kitchen Cupboards

D J Moores, thank you very much for your advice! Very helpful. I will look into this. I will have to request the Council’s permission to make alterations on the external wall or add insulation. With regards to getting rid of the smell, would you recommend sanding the back wall instead of re-rendering it..? Or just try to spray it with bleach etc.. without having everything removed…? Many thanks!

The formation of mold and mildew is a common occurrence in moist places. In most homes, the kitchen and bathroom provide the perfect growing environment for mold and mildew. Once this problem sets in, it is very difficult to completely eliminate. By preventing mold and mildew in the first place, you can save yourself a lot of trouble while preventing health problems at the same time.

    Use Mold Resistant Paint

Painting your kitchen walls with mold-resistant paint provides an extra layer of protection against the formation of mold and mildew. These paints or mold-resistant additives are available in most home improvement centers.

    Keep the Kitchen Dry

This is perhaps the most important step in keeping your kitchen mold-free. Run water on low whenever you are washing utensils or rinsing food. Avoid splashing water around the sink or on the kitchen counter. If water spills, make sure you wipe it off immediately before it has a chance to penetrate the countertop.

    Clean Your Kitchen Regularly

Mold loves organic food sources, whether they come from rotten food or from dust and dirt. It can grow in your kitchen from food dropped not only in visible places, but also in out of sight places, such as behind the oven and the refrigerator.

Although there is no way to prevent food from dropping on the floor, especially in a shared kitchen, you can prevent mold from growing by cleaning everything top to bottom at least once a month. That includes not only washing dishes but ensuring that there is no food between the counter, fridge and any other piece of furniture or appliances.

If you notice any food or water spots, dont delay moving the furniture, as mold can start a colony in about 24 hours. You can always rely on mold prevention sprays, but dont forget that they will not last forever.

What Causes Water Leaks Under The Sink:

This is the main reason for mold growth under the sink particle board. So, before you get yourself together to remove the mold, first find out where the water leaks. Yielding moisture, they provoke mold and mildew growth.

There are many sources under the sink that might also cause water leaks. It can occur from the water seepage or drain pipe under the sink or from a dishwasher pipe. The leak from the garbage disposal can also be a great source of mold growth. Even from the dampish and wet rags, mold can establish its residence.

As these are the generators of moisture, it is important to provide extra care to fix them. It will be of no help if you clean out the mold and mildew only without fixing the moisture and leak issues. Consequently, it will help to regrow the mold in the same place within a very few days.

How To Get Rid Of Mold In The Kitchen

Despite your best efforts at prevention, mold may still grow in your kitchen. While factors like poor insulation, faulty plumbing, bad weatherproofing and inadequate ventilation can contribute to mold and mildew growth in the kitchen as well as in the rest of the house, mold can grow in any house, even in a brand-new home with great insulation, weatherproofing and plumbing. Mold spores are everywhere, and sometimes its a question of how to get rid of the mold, rather than how to prevent it.

What do you do when you find mold in your kitchen, under the sink, around the window or tap, on the wall, inside a cupboard or elsewhere? If its mildew, rather than mold, you can clean it up with a 1:10 solution of bleach. You can also use vinegar or a fungicide solution to deal with mildew.

But, does bleach kill mold? Most restoration experts caution that, while bleach does kill mold, its only effective at removing mold from non-porous surfaces. Thats because mold extends roots deep into the surface on which it grows, so if you use bleach to clean mold on a wall, cupboard or other porous surface, it will grow back and could even come back worse. Instead, use vinegar or a commercial fungicide to clean up mold.

Few things can put you off your dinner like discovering a patch of mold in your kitchen. Fortunately, a small amount of kitchen mold isnt a big deal. As long as you stay on top of cleaning and prevention, theres no reason it has to take over your home or your life.

What Are The Signs Molds In Kitchen

The effects of molds in your kitchen may not be immediately visible in some cases. Still, if you have ever seen patches of white mold on your kitchen cabinet, appliances, walls, and other parts of your kitchen, it could indicate the presence of mold.

This happens because molds decompose materials that they settle on, leaving them discolored, damaged, and in some cases, in need of replacement.

Other signs of molds in your kitchen are the damp and musty smell it emits when it comes in contact with wood or other materials. The smell can be awful in most cases and weird or earthy in other cases. Such smell indicates the presence of mold in your kitchen.

Wall cracking or bubbling is another sign to watch out for mold in your kitchen.

These signs may not be evident to you even when you perceive this weird smell from your kitchen on some occasions, as they grow in areas that are not easily seen or reachable.
