Instructions To Make Chocolate Bar Molds

Make Custom Molds for Chocolate with the Mold Press!

Scoop out equal amounts of putty A and putty B of the Amazing Mold Putty.

Mix them together thoroughly. Its important that they are mixed together completely so that you create an even chocolate mold. This is why the putties are different colors its so you can see if they have been mixed together properly.

Once its completely mixed, press it over the top of the chocolate bar. I ended up using just half of the chocolate bar as I liked the look of the smaller bar of chocolate.

Tip: Make sure to push the putty all of the chocolate. This ensures youll get all of the details. Its also a good idea to start pushing in the middle and work your way to the outsides. This will help remove any air pockets. If you have an air pocket, that means the details will not transfer to the mold.

Flip the chocolate bar over and press the mold putty around the edge. Try to keep the putty relatively thin as this will make it more flexible.

Notice how my chocolate bar ended up breaking. This is okay since I had already gotten the detail from the top of the bar. Plus the putty feels like clay so any minor details will not transfer. This is why its important to push the putty into any details you do want transferred.

Let the chocolate mold cure for 20 minutes and then remove the chocolate.

Now you have beautiful little silicone mold to start making your own chocolate bars or craft creations! Just be sure to wash it out before using to remove any remaining bits of chocolate.

The Cookie Cutter Method

This is an amazingly easy and versatile way to shape chocolate.

Tools & Ingredients:

  • Clean, flat plates

Instructions:

First, grease up the inside of the cookie cutter and the part of the plate it will rest on. Next, place the cookie cutter on the plate and the plate on a firm, no-slip surface.

Melt the chocolate chips until smooth. Fill the cookie cutter with melted chocolate and then top it with decorations, if desired.

Slide it into the refrigerator to chill for about 15 to 20 minutes .

Getting it out requires a little more finesse, but it’s a simple process. I ran a flat toothpick around the edges of the chocolate and shook it out gently onto the plate.

What Is Amazing Mold Putty

Amazing Mold Putty is an easy way to make DIY molds at home. It comes with a container of silicone mold putty and a container of rubber mold putty. When mixed together, the two putties combine to make a flexible mold that cures in 20 minutes.

To use Amazing Mold Putty, you mix equal amounts of Putty A and Putty B . Putty A is white and putty B is yellow so that you can easily see how well youve combine them. You want to make sure you mix them thoroughly so that you get a pale yellow color. If you dont, youll have different textures with some parts being more flexible than others.

Once mixed together, you then press the putty around the object youre making a custom mold of. Make sure the putty is not too thick or it will be difficult to remove the item.

Let it cure for 20 minutes and then remove the item. Then your new homemade chocolate mold is ready to use.

I own a lot of candy molds. Its practically a requirement for a candy writerplus, theyre so inexpensive, its easy to buy one here or there and not realize theres a problem until Ive amassed a small Mount Everest of candy molds on top of my kitchen shelves. Between candy supply stores and the internet, its not hard to find a mold for almost any occasion.

But what if you need a certain size, or a hard-to-find shape, or want to make a personalized mold from a sentimental object? Then its time to put your crafty pants on and make your own chocolate mold!

Lately Ive been experimenting with making my own chocolate molds, and its really fun Im going to feature a few upcoming recipes with customized chocolates, so before I post those, I thought it would be helpful to devote a whole post explaining how I make the molds.

There are some methods for making molds that dont require much in the way of specialized ingredients. For instance, this post explains how to make a chocolate cast out of common kitchen ingredients like brown sugar, powdered sugar, flour, etc. Although Ive had a little success with these methods, the end result is invariably messy and imprecise. To get really good, clean results, were going to have to call in the big guns and buy silicone to make our own silicone molds.

What is a vacuum former and how does it work?

Vacuum forming isn’t a new technology, it’s been in development since the 1940s and popular for manufacturing plastic signs, packaging and small parts since the 1950s. What has changed in the past decade is that this techonology has become smaller, more efficient and increasingly accessible to artisan and small batch makers. There are three steps common with almost every vacuum forming machine:

  • A heat source is used to warm a sheet of thermoplastic until it becomes soft enough to form around a shape
  • The soft plastic sheet is pulled around a compatible shape or master object
  • A vacuum is activated to extract excess air to create a tight form of plastic around the shape

    White Milk Or Dark Chocolate

    You can also use silicone and plastic molds with white, milk or dark chocolate chips, wafers or bark. Follow the instructions on your chocolate for melting, then use a decorating bag to pipe the melted chocolate into your individual molds.

    Chocolate will set at room temperature, but you can speed up the process by placing it in the refrigerator to set.

    Once set, remove from the mold and use as desired. Unlike Candy Melts, chocolate will melt at warm temperatures, so its best to keep your molded chocolate in the fridge if your kitchen is warm or youre not going to be using it right away

    Making A Custom Chocolate Mold With The Mayku Formbox

    The Mayku FormBox is an affordable desktop vacuum forming machine. Its a great addition to any makerspace and opens up lots of creative project possibilities. As an example, we used our Mayku FormBox to create a custom mold for chocolates. It was a lot of fun. Heres what we did:

    First, we used TinkerCAD to create some shapes for our chocolate mold. If youre not familiar with TinkerCAD, its a free online CAD tool thats easy to use and great for basic 3D modeling.

    Then we exported these objects as an STL file, loaded that STL into Cura, and printed them on our Ultimaker 3. We then used these 3D printed shapes to make our chocolate mold.

    The Mayku FormBox comes with two types of forming sheets Form Sheets and Cast Sheets. The Cast Sheets are food-safe, so we used one of them for this project.

    After making the mold, we melted our chocolates and spooned them into the molds:

    Then we placed the tray into a freezer so the chocolates could solidify. Once chilled, we removed the chocolates from the mold:

    OK, so theyre not the prettiest chocolates We learned that using somewhat larger shapes would be preferable since the chocolates tend to break when trying to remove such small pieces from the mold. But they tasted great, and it was a fun project!

    Thermoformed Vs Injection Style Molds

    Assemble Your Work Station

    First, choose a small, shallow container and pack it full of brown sugar. This one required about two pounds of sugar to fill it. Fortunately, brown sugar is cheap and reusable.

    Next, fill your container with brown sugar and pack it down into a uniform surface.

    It’s a good idea to get another pan that has a smooth bottom to pack it down even more tightly. I borrowed my neighbor’s loaf pan for the job.

    You really want that sugar to be as firm as possibleit’s going to be the foundation for your chocolate.

    Remove the casting objects from the sugar and fill the spaces with melted chocolate. I used bittersweet here, but you could use any combination of chocolate, white chocolate, or peanut butter chips.

    After you fill all the spaces, you can also sprinkle on a topping to decorate the chocolate. I used a little fleur de sel and then popped the whole thing in the fridge so the chocolate could set.
