Clearing the air about Chlorine Dioxide

ClO2 is not a naturally occurring gas. In fact, it is prepared in laboratories for use in various applications in everyday life.

ClO2 gas is made up of a single chlorine atom and two oxygen atoms. It is of a red to yellow-green color in its natural gas form. But it is usually used with a combination of other ingredients for its various other uses.

The Future Of Mold Removal

Recently, a new technology has found its way into the mix that brings with it better and often safer products designed for speed and efficacy. Their claims of being stronger, faster, and safer than traditional chemicals are being investigated and tested without much fanfare but with some great success. At the 2019 Experience Convention & Tradeshow this past September, no less than three booths were dedicated to this new product segment. Their names are not familiar to most of us yet, but they will be making a splash in a short time.

The new products all share a similar chemical base: chlorine dioxide. Instead of traditional bleach-based products, these new compounds can clean and kill mold and mildew with minimum effect on their environments. Interestingly, while very new to our industry, chlorine dioxide has been in use for over 100 years and is known for its mold killing properties. It is commonly used to protect and supply pathogen free water to public drinking systems and is used as a powerful disinfectant in hospitals and food processing plants.

If it is being used in our food and water supplies, how bad can it be for us? Chlorine dioxide, unlike chlorine, does not create carcinogenic trihalomethanes. It is stable in a wide pH range , unlike chlorine which is corrosive at a low pH and becomes less effective as pH increases. Chlorines efficacy drops from a mere 24% to 9% between pH 8 to 8.5 at which point it can no longer be considered efficacious.

Safety Should Always Take Precedence

The History Of Mold Removal

The truth is professionals have known the dangers of mold, and the science required to address it, for many years. Industry legends like Ed Cross and Jim Holland were writing about liability and exposure well before the Ballard case, and the sick building syndrome concept preceded her lawsuit by nearly a decade. As years progressed, the mold and mildew remediation industry has refined its response procedures to better protect clients and workers alike. Equipment has improved and building materials are manufactured to be resistant to mold growth.

The remaining mystery in mold remediation involves the best methods to kill mold. Unlike in Leviticus, tearing down the house is generally not a desired outcome for mold removal, so we must think of a better way. For years, many companies used industrial-strength cleaners that killed mold, but the side effects of these toxic chemicals to workers was harmful and, at times, catastrophic.

Chlorine products, sodium hypochlorite products, bleach products, and ammonia-based products can do the job, but worker performance in these conditions is a challenge at best. Stronger, caustic chemicals require space suits for proper protection. Some do-it-yourself remedies, touted by such authorities as Home Depot, involve the use of vinegar, baking soda, or even grapefruit juice.

In Medical & Geriatric Facilities

The spread of pathogens is common in medical and geriatric facilities. So, good cleaning solutions are required for the areas. Chlorine dioxide has been proven effective at preventing Legionella and slime in facility water systems. Chlorine dioxide can also be used to disinfect hard surfaces and examination rooms to eradicate odour or pathogens.

Jim Humble, the man who developed MMS as a medicinal agent, recommends that patients who plan to follow the MMS/chlorine dioxide protocol at home do so with great care and study. His website offers books on the subject that would be valuable for individuals looking to work with chlorine dioxide as a cancer treatment .

When I take MMS or give it to my family, I decide how much to take based on how sick I think we are. For illnesses that involve fevers, I generally take 6-8 activated drops with 18 to 24 drops of DMSO added to the water immediately before drinking it. I administer this dose to myself or my family members one per hour for two consecutive hours and then I wait 12-24 hours and administer one more dose either the next morning or that evening. After those initial 3 doses, I evaluate whether I is feeling better or worse and typically start administering 3 activated drops hourly until the illness subsides. But first-time users of MMS should start slowly and observe how their body reacts to the CDS / MMS. If you are very ill with a disease like COVID-19, Long COVID, cancer or malaria, itâs essential that your body detoxify quickly as you kill the offending pathogens. Consider using a plain water enema whenever you take MMS / CDS to speed up the process of detoxification.

Maintaining A Clean Environment

A chlorine dioxide generator can distribute the gas during the plants lifecycle, ensuring a contaminant free ecosystem. The gas is distributed at low levels that wont affect the plants but are going to kill mold and other pathogens.

Keeping the plants free from mold is essential to the success of the grow operation. Mold can easily spread, once the spores infect the plants the entire crop could be ruined. Dealing with a mold outbreak is a complicated and costly experience that growers do their best to avoid.

Safety Issues In Water And Supplements

Chlorine dioxide is toxic, hence limits on exposure to it are needed to ensure its safe use. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has set a maximum level of 0.8 mg/L for chlorine dioxide in drinking water. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration , an agency of the United States Department of Labor, has set an 8-hour permissible exposure limit of 0.1 ppm in air for people working with chlorine dioxide.

On July 30, 2010, and again on October 1, 2010, the United States Food and Drug Administration warned against the use of the product “Miracle Mineral Supplement“, or “MMS”, which when prepared according to the instructions produces chlorine dioxide. MMS has been marketed as a treatment for a variety of conditions, including HIV, cancer, autism, and acne. The FDA warnings informed consumers that MMS can cause serious harm to health and stated that it has received numerous reports of nausea, diarrhea, severe vomiting, and life-threatening low blood pressure caused by dehydration. This warning was repeated for a third time on 12 August 2019, and a fourth on April 8, 2020, stating that ingesting MMS is the same as drinking bleach, and urging consumers to not use them or give these products to their children for any reason.

Remove Airborne Allergens And Pathogens

The first step to removing allergens and airborne contaminants from the air is cleaning the ductwork. The EPA found indoor air to be about five times more polluted than outdoor air. Some buildings have 100 times the pollution.

Dust mites thrive in dirty ductwork where they feed on organic matter. The antimicrobial disinfectant chlorine dioxide gas improves indoor air quality by reducing the concentration of bacteria and fungi. Filtration of air efficiently is essential to stop the spread of these diseases and keep loved ones and employees from getting ill.

Detailed Information About How To Use Cds / Mms

Chlorine dioxide is a gas produced during the preparation of MMS or CDS in a special at-home procedure. The chlorine dioxide gas remains trapped inside the liquid for about 30 minutes after it is prepared. During this time, the MMS / CDS can be administered transdermally through the skin , it can be consumed orally, it can be used as a douche, or it can be used in an enema . MMS / CDS is easy to prepare at home with the proper materials

The gas produced by MMS / CDS in combination with water consists of small quantities of chlorine dioxide that will damage and kill pathogens, viruses, bacteria, nano-microbes, cancer cells, and other unhealthy cells and particles in the body without doing any harm to healthy human cells. The MMS formula consists of distilled water and 28% sodium chlorite, a chemical commonly used to cleanse water to make it safe for human consumption. A specific procedure for using MMS and other ingredients can be followed to create the chlorine dioxide compound that is said to have cancer-curing qualities.

Chlorine Dioxide Vs Mold

Magic Mold Remover (Chlorine Dioxide aka Activated MMS).avi

my 2004 vw jetta was stored for a couple of months and now has a moldy smell. the smell isnt coming from the ac vents. it seems more connected to the upholstery and carpets. ive cleaned the car and shampooed everything twice. ive also had the car professionally cleaned. the smell returns after awhile. looking around for a fix, i came across reference to a chlorine dioxide generator called auto vaccine. has anyone used this? is it effective? or just snake oil im trying to avoid having to replace the entire interior if possible.

Have you called around to auto detailers in your area? Not for cleaning, but for odor removal? If it were me, I might use something like a Bissel carpet cleaner, but instead of shampoo, Id use an odor eliminator, like Odoban. I havent tried that, havent had the problem. Key is making sure the car can dry thoroughly .

Chlorine dioxide? They must have won the Nobel prize for chemistry because I doubt such a chemical exists.

Well it does exist, but it is an explosive and it set off by light. I don't think I would use it on my car.

The referenced material might help, personally I would not want to play with the stuff when there are known proven materials. Call one of the companies that specialize in restoring homes after fires. They will have an industrial ozone machine if that is what is needed, they are also experienced with finding those problems and using whatever techniques are needed to correct the problem.

Can Chlorine Bleach Kill Mold

At first glance, bleach does appear to kill mold in the short-term. Yet many homeowners who turn to this popular surface disinfectant find mold eventually returns to the treated area. A brief look at the product label on a jug of bleach sheds further light on this problem where it will likely note that it is only effective on hard, nonporous surfaces.

This keys in on bleachs inability to soak into porous surfaces. As a fungus mold shares some traits with plants, including a root structure known as mycelia. This means that to effectively remediate mold, the roots of the fungal infestation needs to be killed. Bleach only kills the surface cellular structures of the mold and turning the surface white. The microscopic roots remain to allow the mold to eventually grow back.

At the same time, its also worth noting that nearly 90% of bleach is simply water. The chloride component evaporates quickly when exposed to air, leaving behind water, which is one of the key factors mold needs to propagate.

What Is A More Effective Method For Safely Killing Mold

Its also important to keep in mind that mold spores, whether they are alive, dead, or potentially dormant still tend to act like an allergen. A hard or nonporous surface that isnt vulnerable to water damage may be salvaged from a mold-infested environment related to water damage.

More porous substances including wood may continue to harbor a mold spore presence for a long time to come after the initial incident. To effectively kill mold in a situation like this you need a heavy duty, non-toxic, oxygen-based bleaching detergent.

Look for one that has been specially formulated to permeate porous substances where molds microscopic roots can linger. Since it doesnt have any chlorine, it doesnt produce the same toxic gas and has a far lesser threat of causing damage to your skin.

Its also important to take measures to protect yourself against fugitive mold spores during the cleaning process. Mold spores can potentially be very toxic and can affect exposed mucous membranes including your nasal passages, throat, and lungs. Before entering an area that has been infested with the presence of mold, you should don proper safety gear such as gloves, a quality respiration mask, and safety goggles.
