How To Make Clear Plastic Molds

The Visual Results Based On Water Type

How I make my clear silicone molds

As previously mentioned, the freezing method has a greater impact on the clarity of the ice than the type or temperature of water. For methods that include standard molds, the freezing effect is so isolated to that particular portion of the mold that it becomes difficult to discern the results cloudiness, gas streaks, cracks in the ice will all be present in every cube.

How To Polish And Add Color To Clear Parts

Polish

When making clear parts, post-processing is necessary to achieve the required level of transparency. In general, polishing after manufacture is the best way to make SLA and CNC parts fully transparent.

For CNC machined materials, especially PMMA, polishing can greatly increase clarity, partly because acrylic is highly resistant to the small scratches that can otherwise be caused by polishing equipment. Polishing approaches include buffing, flame polishing , and optical machining. PC is more vulnerable to scratches, so vapor polishing is used to increase clarity.

Polishing also improves the clarity of SLA parts. For these 3D printed clear parts, a three-part process of wet sanding, cork board cleaning, and polishing with a microfiber cloth can produce good results.

Color

In addition to polishing, we can introduce color to clear parts, usually for aesthetic reasons. With injection molded or urethane cast parts, we can facilitate self-texture and self-color during the molding stage by adding colorants and other additives. Alternatively , we can add tints or coatings of paint after the molding process, which makes it possible to have two colors on the final part.

How Do You Make Mold For Resin

When creating a resin mold, a three-dimensional object is used to give shape to the mold. This object is called a model. Complex resin molds are made by placing a model in a container and pouring clear rubber around the object. After the rubber dries, it can be cut into two pieces, each piece resulting in a mold for one half of a resin piece.

Before You Get Started

1. When you start making resin molds, hair and particles like to sit on silicone, so always clean their surfaces before you start.

2. With clean hands, make sure that the surface you are working on is flat and level so that the silicone is evenly distributed.

3. Choose the right design. To achieve the result of a glossy surface, your original design should have a glossy surface, you can varnish or coat the surface design with a layer of resin and completely harden to the touch.

4. Choose the right housing for your design, taking into account enough space on the side and the depth of the final mold. This way you do not waste silicone filling unnecessary gaps and you have enough space so that the mold does not break due to the thin layer of silicone. The housing can be metal, hard plastic, or cardboard.

5. When mixing silicon, use a 1: 1 weight ratio for best results.

6. While stirring, stir the silicon for at least 3 minutes, depending on the amount to mix well and reduce bubbles.

7. Be sure to wait for the mold to harden for at least 12 hours before using the resin.

8. Touch the silicon. It doesnt matter if its a little sticky.

9. Never use direct heat on molds, burn them, and clean with adhesive tape. Clean the surface and gently clean the inside with soap and water if necessary.

What Is The Most Durable Injection Molding Plastic For Clear Parts

PC and ABS should be the most 2 durable injection molding plastics for clear parts.

PC is hard and strong molded plastic which can withstand the highly-impact, the material can be used as a lens cover.

ABS displays the synthesis working ability, it is flexible and not so easy to crack, but it is not very clear molding plastic.

Clear mold plastics such as PC, ABS, HDPE, PP etc. are used commonly at TEAM Rapid, contact us for more details of clear plastic molding resins.

Silicone Molds For Resin Valuable Tips And Tricks

  • If it is too expensive for you to build a wooden frame in advance, then there is a very simple alternative. Take a base plate made of smooth planed wood and then place a frame made of Lego bricks which you glue to the plate. With this you are absolutely flexible in size and shape. When sealing and later pouring in the silicone you proceed in the same way as with a wooden frame.
  • The optimal room temperature for drying silicone is between 18° and 22° C. If the temperature is higher, the material may clump because it dries too quickly. If the room temperature is lower than 18° C, the drying process is unnecessarily prolonged.
  • Another little trick if you are unsure how much silicone you actually need: Build the wooden frame as described and fix your blank to the base plate. Now fill the mold with rice until it is about one centimetre higher than the object. Since the weight of the rice corresponds approximately to the required amount of silicone, you only have to weigh it now.
  • An important tip at the end: In order not to lose the joy of your project at the beginning, first plan a relatively simple form and take your time for the implementation. Gradually you can increase the level of difficulty.

In this technique, the silicone is placed in a basin or bowl containing a mixture of detergent and water. There it becomes a malleable mass with which the blank is enclosed. The silicone mass should not be used too sparingly, otherwise the form becomes unstable and brittle.

Think of an opening to remove the object or a place that can be cut open after curing.

    Making A Two Part Mold

  • 1Draw a centerline on your master part. The separate sides of a two-part mold join along the centerline of the master object. Retrieve your master item, a permanent marker, and a ruler. Draw a straight centerline around your master item.XResearch source
  • 2Embed half of the master item in a clay bed. Set a block of non-toxic and non-drying molding clay on your work surface. Embed the master item into the clay up to the centerline. The top of the item should line up with the top of the clay bed. There should be a 1 inch border of clay surrounding the remaining 3 sides of the item.XResearch source
  • 3Attach 4 alignment keys to the top of the clay bed. Alignment keys join the 2 halves together perfectly. Retrieve four ½ inch alignment keys and a bottle of temporary adhesive. Apply a thin layer of temporary adhesive to the flat side of the alignment key. Place the key in ¼ inch from the top left corner and adhere it directly to the clay. Place 1 key in each of the remaining 3 corners.XResearch source
  • 4Secure the master part to a retaining wall. In order to fill the mold, you must provide an opening. For this mold, the opening will appear at the top of the clay bed. Cut And Assemble The Form

When I make forms, I like to have two pieces of the material of my choice available- one that I can cut from and one that I will use as the base. You will want to cut the sides to be higher than the thickness of the table pour . Most tables are poured between 1.5 3. This means if you do a 4 side, you will not have to worry about the height of the walls for most pours you will complete while using this mold.

After you have cut the form, you will begin the assembly process. Place the walls of the mold on top of the base . Placing the walls on top will help mitigate leaking. It is less likely that epoxy will slip through a sealed form if it does not also have extra gravity playing a role. This will also help the base stay level.

To ensure that the form is sturdy and secured, I usually screw the walls in from underneath the base, making sure the screw heads have a divot to go into . This also helps prevent any slipping later on in the project.

Molds That Dont Pass The Clarity Test

Below is the rundown of the molds I tested for the sake of being thorough. There is only one insulated mold on this list that didnt perform well enough to pass. My suggestion is to get the basic OXO model and use it to create shaker and stirring glass ice, not presentation ice.

This ice is the result of directional freezing. This ice is on its side, with the cloudy portion being from the bottom of the cooler.

Polymer clay can be used to make many kinds of molds. Anyone can make them, and mold making is also one of the most fun and useful things to do with polymer clay. Once hardened the molds can be used to shape new raw polymer clay or other kinds of clay and materials, and raw polymer clay can also be used in molds not made from polymer clay. Shallow molds in sheet form called texture molds can also be created, and reverse molds made in two steps can act as stamps. Most clay molds are push molds which make casts that are flat on one side, but two-part molds can be made for creating 3D molds and casts though not as often.
