You need to get yourself tools like a cleaning soft brush, a spare toothbrush, a sponge for scrubbing, a dustpan, and a hand vacuum or a broomstick. You can easily find such products at your local store. We recommend that you keep a separate tool set for the shower mold. Why? It is best to avoid using the same products elsewhere.

Best Shower Cleaners For Mold

1) Lysol Mold & Mildew Blaster with BleachThis Lysol cleaner is a great option for removing black fungus from the shower. This cleaner kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. It’s a great option for removing soap scum and it will give a nice shine to the bathroom surfaces. This is a must have cleaner for your shower.

2) Puracy Organic Home Care SetIf you prefer to use a non-toxic all natural cleaner this is a good option. This multi-surface cleaner will clean the fungus from the shower and leave a pleasant smell behind. It is a plant derived cleaner that is the perfection option for non- toxic cleaning.

3) Complete Mold Killer & Remover DIY BundleThis cleaner is very easy to use. There is no scrubbing required, simply spray it onto the caulk sealant and let it sit for 15 seconds. It will remove and kill the fungus. This bundle also comes with the RMR-86 which will remove the stain caused from the fungus.

4) ForceField ScumBlaster BundleThis bundle kills and removes stains from black mold. It works well on hard surfaces, so it is perfect for the shower caulk. Spray this on the fungus, wait while it works some magic, and then rinse. You can spray this on daily to help prevent in the future.

Black Mold On Silicone Around The Tub Shower And Sinks

Silicone is usually a white color, sometimes called caulking that fills the space between a sink, countertop, or the tub, shower, and the wall. The growth of the black mold often happens on silicone in the shower and throughout the bathroom, as it is a difficult area to keep dry and clean. Clean this area as you see the mold start to form to prevent it from getting out of control.

An Important Note About Using Bleach To Remove Mold

Bleach is no longer considered to be the best way to remove mold. It is only effective if the mold is on a non-porous material like tile, bathtubs, glass, and countertops. It doesnt reach the mold growing underneath the surface. Also, bleach can damage the materials it is used on as its a harsh, corrosive chemical. The fumes are strong and harsh and it must be handled with gloves.

Also, you should NEVER mix bleach with ammonia.

However, the bleach does do a great job at removing mold usually and also removes any mold stains as well, which is why I used it in my bathroom. I usually prefer less harsh chemicals or natural cleaning agents, but I am also a fan of using something that works, the first time.

Other alternatives to using bleach to remove mold from caulking would be:

• Oxygen Bleach

I, however, have not been able to find many tutorials on how to use these products specifically for cleaning moldy caulking in bathrooms, so if anyone has tried using them, with success, Id love to know! I tried making a paste of water and OxiClean and slathered it onto the moldy caulking, but it did absolutely nothing. It dried out shortly after application and didnt remove the stains at all.

Alternative Methods Ive Tried

These are also excellent methods, but in MY opinion, they didnt work quite as well as the bleach solution. I PREFER to use no chemicals in the house, but sometimes, when it comes to mold and health, bleach is my go-to.

Im well aware of the benefits of tea tree oil and its disinfecting properties, but come onbleach is just much more durable, and so I trust it more in these situations.

However, if you dont have bleach in your home, or you prefer to use natural products, there are some other things you can do to get the mold off.

Tips To Get Rid Of Mold In Shower Caulk

Clean Routinely With Vinegar

Bleach removes the ugly mold color from surfaces but doesnt penetrate to the root of the problem like vinegar. I have found since routinely cleaning the shower with vinegar, I no longer see mold growing on my shower caulk.

To make this easy shower cleaner, mix 1 part vinegar with three parts warm water. Alternatively, you can use dawn combined with vinegar too by mixing 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup dawn dish detergent.

Dont go too long in between cleanings, and aim to clean your shower 3-4 times per month.

What Didnt Remove Mold

When we first moved to our current house, I did a little research and experimented with a number of methods touted to remove mold from shower caulk. Im sure there are even more techniques than the ones listed below, but heres what did not work for me:

• Saturating the affected area with straight ammonia. This may be incredibly effective, but personally, I detest the smell too much to even try. And since I often use bleach when cleaning I figured it was better just to stay away from this one completely since combining bleach and ammonia produces toxic gas.
• Spraying with vinegar. This method proved completely worthless for my situation, although I believe it has some merit as a mold preventative. I do love vinegar for glass cleaning though! Take a look at this DIY cleaner I use.
• Making a baking soda paste with water. I found this only minimally effective on tough mold. Baking soda is a great natural cleaner, though, and the gentle abrasiveness was good for cleaning the tile and some mildewy spots.
• Combining baking soda and vinegar. Lets talk about this for a minute because I see this combination recommended all the time online. Baking soda and vinegar cancel each other out. This is just basic chemistry, yall. Combining baking soda and vinegar produces carbon dioxide and salty water .

What Causes Mold In Shower Caulk And Tile Grout

Mold loves to grow in places that are damp and dark, so its no surprise that it loves to grow in your shower. Apply A Natural Cleaning Solution To Your Shower Silicone

When you notice the tell-tale lines of black mold on your shower silicone, its time to apply some cleaning power. In the plastic container, mix about half a cup of white distilled vinegar and a tablespoon of baking soda with half a cup of water. Paint the mix onto the silicone lines with a paintbrush.

Allow to work for a couple of minutes, then proceed to step two, scrubbing.

How To Do It

Gather supplies. Youll need a small mixing bowl, bleach, baking soda, a brush, a roll of plastic wrap, a spray bottle, and a respirator. The plastic wrap shown in the photo below is the stuff you use to wrap things together, but you can also use the same plastic wrap you keep in your kitchen. Also known as Saran Wrap. Also, wear old clothes that you wouldnt mind spilling bleach on. It will happen.

Mix up your cleaning solution. The cleaning solution consists of a bleach and baking soda paste. You make it by mixing bleach and baking soda in a bowl until its about the consistency of pancake batter. The baking soda doesnt do any cleaning its just a cheap powder that will help make the bleach pasty. Dont skimp on the cleaning solution here go ahead and make way more than you think youll need. Bleach and baking soda are both inexpensive. Be sure to wear your respirator while doing this.

Apply the cleaning solution to the moldy caulk. Use your brush to apply the bleach paste onto the moldy caulk. Again, dont skimp here its cheap, so cake it on. If you happen to use a disposable paintbrush, I suggest working quickly. The bleach might disintegrate the bristles on your brush.

I was amazed by how well this worked. The entire project probably involved about 20 minutes of work and required no elbow grease whatsoever.
