Question: Mold Or Mildew On Fabric Couch

How To Remove Mildew Stains from Outdoor Cushions

My husband and I owned a house trailer, but just sold it to our son. We turned the heat off and it’s been closed up all this winter, now the couches have either mold or mildew on them. They feel very damp or wet, it’s been very cold. I thought mildew only grew in warm temps. What can I do to clean the furniture, because our son plans on keeping it. Help please.

There are some things you can try. Setting them out in the sunshine for as long as you reasonably can is one. Thoroughly spraying them down with tea tree oil or citricidal concentrate mixed with water is another. Bleach would be best for killing mode but would probably damage the fabric and mar the color.

Sadly, once mold gets into something porous like upholstered furniture it is very hard to get it out.

Get a personal steam cleaner its takes some work but it will get it done.

can I use White Vinegar insted of water for the steamer?

bleach does not kill mold!!!!!!!

Are Your Cushions Beyond Repair

Although these methods are effective, you might find yourself in a situation where the cushions are beyond repair.

If the mold and mildew stains are extreme and persist even after a thorough cleaning, its time to get some new outdoor cushions.

Next time youre in the market for outdoor cushions, I recommend choosing carefully.

Opt for waterproof and weather-resistant fabrics, which will limit your cushions exposure to mold and mildew.

Printed acrylic and polyester are water-repellent, which is why theyre excellent fabrics for outdoor cushions, swimwear, and active gear.

Vinyl is the most affordable option for outdoor cushions. When treated properly, its resistant to mildew. The drawback is that it gets hot to the touch during summer days.

But my top recommendation is solution-dyed acrylic. Its soft and comfortable, unlike vinyl, which can be hard and hot.

Also, solution-dyed acrylic is durable and less likely to fade. Most important of all, its resistant to mildew and mold. But just in case you do notice mold or mildew, this fabric is easy to clean.

If your cushions are irreparable, there are dozens of outdoor cushions to choose from on , Walmart.com, and BedBathAndBeyond.com.

Have some fun shopping for your new set of cushions, and dont stress about mold or mildew.

So What Can You Do To Clean Off Mould From Your Cushions

How to Clean Moldy Outdoor Furniture Cushions

The best way to kill and effectively remove mould is to use bleach, which will destroy the mould organisms themselves and also clean the surfaces very thoroughly, in many cases removing any stains the mould may otherwise leave behind. Of course, using bleach on any fabric can cause some colour loss, so you need to dilute the bleach and also test out the solution you are using on a small, not very visible part of the fabric before you start scrubbing off the mould. For most vinyl or acrylic outdoor cushions, a reasonable solution to use is one cup of bleach in a litre of water, with around a cup of normal fabric detergent added in to make it easier to work with and to boost its cleaning power.

How To Remove Mould From Cushions

One of the biggest problems with outdoor furniture cushions is that they get damp, or even wet fairly often. They can often dry out just fine in the sun, but sometimes, if the fabric is not mould resistant, a little moisture remains which allows mould to grow on them. Mould can be a huge problem because as well as being unsightly, it has a distinctive smell which can be extremely hard to get rid of, so even if you cant see the mould on your outdoor chair cushions, everybody will know it is there! Mould also continues to grow once it has taken hold, and will leave your cushions stained or discoloured when removed if there has been a large growth area of black or green mould.

How To Get Rid Of Mildew In A Sofa Cushion

Sofa cushions, usually filled with a thick foam material, act like a sponge when they get wet. If the moisture isn’t promptly removed, fuzzy mold and mildew can develop. When left alone, mildew spores tunnel deep down into your sofa cushions, where it’s almost impossible to get them out. If a mildew stain is relatively new, though, there’s still hope. Disinfecting the fabric will knock out the spores and help get rid of any discoloration.

  • 1.

Take the sofa cushion outdoors, if possible, and brush off as much mildew as you can with a stiff-bristled broom. By doing this, you’ll avoid spreading mildew spores inside your home. If you can’t remove the cushion, vacuum the mildew-stained sofa with the machine’s nozzle attachment.

  • 2.

Combine 1 cup rubbing alcohol and 1 cup warm water, or 1 cup ammonia and 1 cup cool water. Dampen a cloth with the solution, then squeeze out excess liquid.

  • 3.

Sponge the mildew stain with the damp cloth a few times until the discoloration disappears.

  • 4.

Dampen a clean cloth with cool water, then blot the area to rinse off the rubbing alcohol and water or the ammonia and water mixture.

  • 5.

Lightly mist the fabric with a fungicide spray or disinfectant spray to kill any remaining mildew spores. Do not rinse off.

  • 6.

Let the cushion dry outside in the sun, or set it in front of a running fan. Holding up a hair dryer set on the “cool” temperature setting also works.

How To Remove Mold And Mildew From Upholstery

Jack White, vice president of technical services for Rainbow International, explains whats actually going on when you see mold on your comfy couch.

Mold has to have the right conditions to grow on upholstery. First, there must be an organic food source mold cannot grow on synthetic materials but it can grow on the soil embedded in synthetic materials. There must also be moisture. The organic material has to stay wet for a certain period of time for mold to begin to grow.

Given this knowledge, here are Whites recommendations for dealing with mold on upholstery:

  • If your upholstered furniture has water damage and a substantial amount of mold growth, it should be replaced.
  • If there’s only a small mold stain, you can try using a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Blot it on the mold and allow it to work for a minute or so. Rinse solution from the area by alternately dabbing it with a damp cloth or sponge and a dry cotton cloth. This probably will not remove the mold, but it may help lessen the stain.
  • Consult a professional upholstery cleaner if the stain persists or reappears.
  • White also adds that silk, wool, antique or vintage upholstery should be cleaned by a professional.

If you have just flipped your couch cushions only to discover that the opposite side has an old stain someone was trying to hide, you have to use something a little stronger than soap and water to remove it.

    • Dry towel

Pour cold water into a spray bottle and add the vinegar and soap. Shake the bottle gently to mix and spray the solution directly onto the stained area of the cushion. Spray just enough to coat it but not saturate it.

Use a dry sponge to rub the stain away using circular motions. Rinse the sponge with fresh water and wring out the excess water. Wipe the area with a clean sponge and pat dry with a towel. For ink stains, clean microfiber with alcohol or a dry cleaning solvent.

While waiting for the couch cushion to completely dry, brush the mold spores away using a clean broom. You have to do this step at such a moment because the mold spores can be potentially active again later.

Pair the broom with a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment or a handheld vacuum to remove the spores that cannot be brushed away by broom. These spores have likely been absorbed into the material deeply.

Manual Way To Clean Couch Cushions

Frequently, spills and stains seep beneath the fabric of the cushion cover to the material below, especially if you are not able to catch them in time to get rid of them quickly.

Cleaning a foam couch cushion or washing a memory foam pillow can be a little tricky but not impossible. Here is how to clean couch cushions when stains have seeped below the fabric.

    • Dry towel

An essential first step in cleaning the inside cushions of the sofa seats is to blot up the stained area immediately to prevent the liquid from seeping too far down into the cushioning. If your cushion covers are removable, pull the cushion out of the fabric by unzipping the backside.

Sprinkle some baking soda onto the stain and allow it to sit for an hour to soak up the stain. Use paper towels to wipe the moistened baking soda away.

Fill a bottle with warm water and a tablespoon of laundry soap and shake gently. Spray the stained area lightly and use a dry sponge to clean away the stain. Blot the cushion with a dry towel and allow it to air dry before replacing the cover.

You can also use this method for washing a bamboo pillow if the care tag does not recommend machine washing. Air dry like you would couch cushions.
