How To Remove The Smell Of Mold From Your Car
Chances are, from the commute to work to leisurely weekend drives, you spend a good deal of time inside your automobile. Until offensive odors creep in, you may even take for granted that those driving times are generally odor-free. Unfortunately, mold odors are a common problem with automobile interiors. Such smells are caused by standing water or moisture, uncleaned spills, window or door seal leaks, or condensed moisture in the air conditioning system.
In order to combat the mold odor inside your automobile, you must first identify its origin. This means thoroughly inspecting the interior of your vehicle. Look under floor mats and seats, in the crevices of cushions, and if all else fails turn on your air conditioning and take a sniff. Once you locate the molded area and gain an idea of its severity or determine it is an issue with your air conditioning system, you can then choose the most appropriate of the following methods to fit your needs.
Use Cleaning Supplies Like Bleach
One way to remove mildew is to use store-bought cleaning supplies like bleach.
This will get rid of most mold and mildew in your home, but you might need to use a stronger product if the musty smells remain after a few hours or days.
This method is probably the quickest because you can just buy the product off the shelf and use it immediately.
Bleach is really harsh on surfaces so be careful when using it and make sure you dont leaven behind any bleach residue as well!
Wear protective gear to avoid irritating your skin and eyes when using it.

What Causes A Mildew Smell In A Car
Several things might cause a mildew smell in a vehicles interior. The origins of mildew smell range from simple to serious, and some require the assistance of a mechanic.
If you notice a musty smell or believe you have mold in the car, it might be trash hidden under the seats or food waste lingering in small crevices.
Sometimes, wet carpeting might cause mold growth. If it snows and passengers track in plenty of slush, moisture can build up, leading to mold spore formation.
If you own a vehicle with a sunroof, a blocked drain might cause water leaks onto the seats or saturate the headliner.
Another cause of mold in your car might be that the cabin filter has become clogged with fallen leaves.
And sometimes, leaks in the trunk allow moisture inside, creating dank odors.
Other unpleasant interior smells might indicate significant issues with your vehicles heater core or air conditioning system.

How do you get mildew smell out of a flooded car? My daughter’s new car smell of mildrew. We are afraid it was a flooded car. How can we get this odor out? It didn’t smell when we bought it. It has been about two months now and the odor is very strong. They must have used something to hide the odor at the time of the sale.
You may be a LONG time in getting that smell out. Six of us piled into my Chevy Blazer soaking wet after sitting in and walking through a torrential downpour and the mildew smell showed up within 48 hours.
Fabreeze will provide a temporary solution and at least make the car driveable but it will be back. Repeated treatments and airings finally got it to disapate but it was the better part of a year before it really went away.
The enzyme cleaner sounds like a better bet than fabreeze. There are several kinds, Nature’s Miracle, Petzyme, etc. Check with your local pet supply store.
If it’s totally unbearable, take it to an upholstry shop and see if they can clean it. They may not be able to get everything out but you’ll be further along that timeline I was on.

How To Eliminate Car Air Conditioner Smells
One other possible source of that mildew smell is the air conditioning system. One telltale sign is damp floor mats near the air conditioner. If you find an odor coming from this area, open the front cover and remove the filter. Use a nylon scrub pad to remove any mold growth, then use a cotton swab to dry it. When youre sure the area is completely dry, apply an anti-mildew solution, enzyme cleaner or odor absorber. You could also sprinkle baking soda on the upholstery and leave it in place for a day or so before vacuuming away. By then, the smell should have dissipated. You also may, of course, remove any car mats and let them air out for a while. Dust can also pile up inside the vents and lead to a musty smell in a car. In this case, vacuum the vents and use the water-vinegar solution on the interior.
After finding the source of car odors and treating them, your car should smell great. With the help of air fresheners, your car could almost smell as good as new. For more helpful information, check out these articles about car maintenance and cleaning tips.

At Risk Moldy Car Occupants
A moldy car is more than an obnoxious-smelling vehicle in which to travel.
Watch out: For occupants who are at extra risk of respiratory or health problems such as asthmatics, elderly, infant, or immune-compromised people, exposure to high levels of mold, or of mold smells may be affected, possibly dangerously-so, even when there is no actual visible mold.
Q I Dont Have Time To Clean My Car How Much Will It Cost To Pay Someone To Do It For Me
A. Most full-service car washes offer interior cleaning or reconditioning services. Youll need to chat with the attendant to find out whats involved in the process, but most will charge different prices depending on the vehicle. Small cars can cost anywhere from $50 to $200, while larger vehicles like SUVs and wagons can start at $200 and go up from there. Even if you have time to clean the car yourself, its sometimes best to pay a pro to do it for you, because theyll have the right chemicals and machines to get the job done right.

How To Fix A Car That Smells Like Mildew
To get rid of the mildew smell in your car, you will first need to identify the source. According to John Ibbotson, chief mechanic for Consumer Reports magazine, mildew often results from a leaking heater core or clogged air conditioning drain.
Many times, fixing these problems is enough to eliminate the odor. At any rate, you should have an air conditioner inspection performed so that you can get to the root of the issue.
Most people would like to eliminate musty odors right away rather than waiting on repairs. As a quick fix, Popular Mechanics recommends turning off your air conditioner when you are about a mile or so from your destination. With the a/c off, operate your fan on high to help dry out the system. Of course, you should look at this as only a temporary fix, since the problem will likely return as long as your air conditioner has problems.

Remove Mold From Car Seats With White Vinegar
Vinegar Kills Mold On Car Seats and Carpets
One of the best ways to get rid of mold on car seats, car carpet, interior or anywhere that mold grows in your home, is to use white vinegar or alcohol. White vinegar is an acid, so it will burn the mold and its spores to kill it and stop it coming back.
What you will need to remove mold with vinegar:
To use vinegar to remove mold from your car seats, mix eight parts of white vinegar to two parts of water and use either a clean cloth to dab it on, or put the mixture in a spray bottle and spray over the surface until it is soaked
Donât worry about the strong vinegar smell, it will disappear as it dries out with air.
You can use undiluted vinegar if the infestation is bad. White vinegar works well on any type of car seats including leather, vinyl and cloth-type seats and will not damage the materials.
* It is a good idea to test a small inconspicuous area to ensure there is no reaction on the surface or material you are using it on.
If there are only a few clusters of mold, just spray or dab over the area plus up to about one or two feet surrounding the area, the aim is to kill the underlying spores as well.
If the infestation is quite severe, spray over the whole car seat from top to bottom and underneath.

Before Giving Up On The Overdosed Over
you can try the next suggestion we list below:
Air out the car and let it bake in the sun with its windows open . Otherwise, to restore the car now may require identifying just what in-car components are smell sources, they have to then be removed, the car aired-out, and new materials installed. These might include:
- Car carpets
- Car sound insulation padding
- Trunk carpeting or sound insulation padding
We do not advise just passing on the car to someone else before these problems are fixed – you wouldn’t want to be responsible for some future car-occupant’s health or respiratory problem that might be caused, contributed to, or blamed-on the smelly car.
