Dry the couch completely in a well-ventilated area or in the sunlight. Use fans or open a window, if possible.

Question: Black Mold All Over A White Sectional
We had a white sectional cleaned by Sears about 2yrs ago. It’s in a room that we don’t really use so we didn’t notice what was happening until a few weeks ago. I think the couch was very wet after they cleaned it, but they never told us what to do. The couch has what looks like black mold in spots all over it. It’s worse on the parts that are not exposed. To remove mildew from your outdoor cushions, first, determine whether you have fabric or acrylic cushions.
Fabric Cushions: To clean fabric cushions, dilute a 12 cup of bleach into 1 gallon of water. Use a spray bottle to apply the mixture, then clean the mildew off of the cushion with a scrub brush. Acrylic Cushions: For acrylic cushions, mix 1 cup bleach and 2 cups of detergent into a gallon of water. It is easiest to apply with a spray bottle. Let is set for about 30 minutes before rinsing with water.

This is almost certainly mold growth. This can be caused by poor ventilation, inadequate air conditioning or a flooding event. If there are no signs of a flooding event, its due to humidity. In regards to the insurance companys claim the humidity levels are normal, this could simply be due to the timing of the inspection. Its quite possible the growth occurred during a high humidity period but the levels had returned to normal the day the insurance adjuster visited the home. Mold growth will become inactive when the humidity/moisture levels return to normal, but the visible growth will not disappear.
Verifying whether or not the substance is mold growth can be accomplished with a simple tape lift sample. Any local inspector or lab should be able to accomplish this for a small fee.
Assuming the testing results come back positive, the extent of the growth warrants professional remediation/cleaning.
