It can be challenging to get mold out of leather car seats, as there are so many creases for mildew to hide. However, by combining just a few ingredients you likely have around the house already, you can whip together a solution for cleaning leather car seats that will leave them looking like new.

Start by pouring equal parts water and rubbing alcohol into a cup or bucket. For one car seat, one cup of each should suffice. Using a soft cloth moistened with the mixture, rub over any area with mildew problems.

Its best to focus on small sections at a time, scrubbing until the mildew is gone. Dry your car seat with a towel. Make sure you get all of the creases and any other area where moisture may collect.

Allow the leather to dry completely. Keep the car doors open to get better air circulation, and set up a fan to dry the area if possible.

This is almost certainly mold growth. Occasionally a white substance can occur due to efflorescence, but this only happens on masonry, concrete, etc. The widespread pattern of growth indicates high humidity throughout the room. This can be caused by poor ventilation, inadequate air conditioning or a flooding event. If there are no signs of a flooding event, its due to humidity. In regards to the insurance companys claim the humidity levels are normal, this could simply be due to the timing of the inspection. Its quite possible the growth occurred during a high humidity period but the levels had returned to normal the day the insurance adjuster visited the home. Mold growth will become inactive when the humidity/moisture levels return to normal, but the visible growth will not disappear.

Verifying whether or not the substance is mold growth can be accomplished with a simple tape lift sample. Any local inspector or lab should be able to accomplish this for a small fee.

Assuming the testing results come back positive, the extent of the growth warrants professional remediation/cleaning. The hard surface items, such as the wood bed frame, can be damp wiped with a mildicide. Porous items such as cloth furniture and the pool table will require HEPA vacuuming, and if unsuccessful, replacement.

Removing Mold On Teak

I have a friend who has an armoire given to him by his parents. It is made of teak and is about 45 years old. They got it in china many years ago. My friend had it in storage for a while, and upon getting it out of storage, he noticed it had mold growing on it. He scraped off most of it but says its still in the grain. He wants to be very careful with the finish which is some type of oil finish, but would like to know how to get rid of the mold.

Thanks for your help!

A chlorine bleach solution kills mold, though to remove it from pores probably requires some vigours scrubbing with a solvent. It any event, the oil finish is likely toast and will need renewingâit may even have contributed to the mold problem to begin with since linseed oil is a particularly attractive food source for mold. But once the mold is out of the pores renewing an oil finish is pretty simple, and needs to be done periodically anyway, most or no mold.

Liberon make an oil they sell as suitable for outdoor sheds and similar. As far as I can make out from the label, it is made of the same ingrediants as their Finishing Oil with an anti-fungal element added.

It might be possible to rub in such an oil, which could both renew the existing finish and perhaps kill the mold.

But would it remove the mold? Probably not.

  • Detecting Mold On Wood

Humans can easily detect most molds. Seriously, how can you not? They are smelly, ugly, and they usually take on a distinct color. What is interesting, though, is that mold starts growing long before humans can detect it.

This implies that your piece of wooden furniture or door can be infested with mold, and you wouldnt suspect a thing until its too late.

How then can you detect this kind of mold growth? Let us introduce you to a moisture meter.

Well, this meter doesnt actually detect mold growth it only detects moisture content, which can then correlate to mold growth. If the moisture content in the wood is more than 20%, then its a valuable sign that the wood may be infested with mold.

When detecting the presence of mold, you should also focus on the affected area of your home or office. Check kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and the like. Anywhere you feel moisture and heat can be trapped in is a suitable growing spot for mold.

The sure way to detect mold is to have a professional come to your home and do a mold inspection. This will involve taking samples of any visible mold and sending them off to a laboratory for analysis. The lab will determine if the mold is harmful and what type of mold it is.
