Why Is Black Mold So Dangerous

Is There A Difference Between Mildew And Mold

Housecleaning Tips : How to Clean Mold From Carpet

Water runs frequently in bathrooms, making it moist and humid, an environment that allows mold to thrive. When people dont clean the surfaces or dry them off, mildew begins to form. If it isnt removed, it develops into mold.

Mildew it the beginning of a mold colony, Dr. Neeta Ogden, a spokesperson for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, told TODAY.

Stagnant water in showers spurs mold growth, which is why so many people struggle to keep them free of mold and mildew. Plus, mold loves lurking in nooks between tile or deep in corners. Sometimes, hidden pipes under the sink or in the walls also have slow leaks that cause water to pool, making perfect hiding places for new colonies.

It has to do with the nature of the bathrooms, where we take showers and baths and wash up,” Ogden said. “Water is constantly being turned on and off … Its a perfect ground for mold to grow.

These varieties of mold mostly look dark brown or green with Stachybotrys the most dangerous kind common to bathrooms appearing so dark that it’s almost black and Penicillium sometimes having a blue, green or yellowish tint to it.

“It can be difficult to tell different types of mold from another,” Tolliver said. “They can look very similar.”

While black mold “is less common than other mold species, it is not rare,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Why Does Mold Grow On Clothes

Similar to the reasons why mold appears in your home, mold on clothes can grow because of dampness and lack of ventilation. Mold disperses spores and toxins that travel through the air and are attracted to damp materials that are fibre-rich, such as wood, drywall, and fabric.

If your clothes remain wet for an extended period of time, mold will be attracted to it fairly quickly anywhere between 24-48 hours. Keeping wet or even moist clothes in unventilated areas or closely together becomes a breeding ground to grow mold on clothes.

If you have recently washed your clothes, it is always best to dry the clothes in sunlight as soon as possible. If you do not have a way to dry clothes outside, dry them in the dryer. Do not let the clothes remain in the washing machine in their damp state for too long.

Dampness is only one of the causes for mold on clothes. If your home is too humid, or if the room where your clothes are stored does not have enough ventilation, chances of finding mold on clothes increases significantly.

Whats So Toxic About Black Mold

Like all mold, active black mold releases millions of microscopic airborne reproductive spores. These invisible particles accumulate in the enclosed environment of a home to levels one would never encounter in the great outdoors. However, black mold spores carry chemicals called mycotoxins that are known to be toxic to humans when inhaled.

What Kind Of Mold Can Grow On Clothes

There are two major types of mold black mold and white mold. Black mold on clothes is not as commonly seen as white mold on clothes, but there are chances of both occurring under the right circumstances.

Black mold, also known as Stachybotrys chartarum, is an extremely toxic mold that grows in homes and produces mycotoxins that are capable of causing health hazards in humans, especially once its spores become airborne. By the time black mold is detected, it is often already a major problem in the home.

Though not as frequently perceived as a threat, white mold is fairly common in homes. It is harder to detect on lighter surfaces and has a propensity for changing colour. White mold also feels flaky, and has a powdery appearance, very similar to mildew, which is an earlier stage of mold.

White mold can be injurious to your health, though not to the same extent as black mold. Both black mold and white mold on clothes are dangerous, causing lasting damage to the surfaces they come in contact with, and must be treated as soon as they are recognised.

In Severe Cases Symptoms Caused By Inhaling Black Mold Can Lead To The Following Health Troubles:

    • Vomiting
    • Asthma
    • Respiratory complications

Sometimes mold invades spaces that are hard to see and reach. It spreads fast, burrowing into walls and ceilings and hiding in cupboards and under carpets. Quite often, people are exposed to black mold without even knowing it. If you or anyone in your home is experiencing any of the aforementioned symptoms without knowing why, you may be exposed to mold.

Black mold should be approached with extreme caution. Tackling black mold without proper knowledge and equipment is unsafe. The suspected contamination should always be examined and removed by professionals.

Of course, moving out is not a simple or accessible process for everyone. If you dont have the resources to move or simply dont want to, consider these prevention measures to protect yourself against black mold:

    • Immediately repair leaks
    • Constantly wipe down/dry wet or damp surfaces
    • Invest in a dehumidifier to clear the air of excess water vapor
    • Clean rooms that are susceptible to water collection with anti-fungal products
    • Open windows to facilitate air circulation when possible
    • Clean rooms/spaces that dont get much use to ensure mold isnt growing there

Like any prevention method, these steps do not ensure that black mold will not grow in your home, but they lessen the chances. The biggest takeaway here is that black mold flourishes in objects that retain water or places that harbor standing water, which is why avoiding humidity is so imperative in preventing fungus growth.

What Does Black Mold Smell Like

The smell of black mold is a little more difficult to pinpoint than the look. Like most molds, you need to get up close and have a good sniff, which for obvious reasons is not advisable.

For those of you with a stronger sense of smell, you might be able to detect a musty odor from a safe distance, however most fungi share this same smell, so its not really possible to detect from smell alone.

Now that weve explained why black mold is dangerous, Im sure youre anxious to remove it.

Youve already identified where its coming from.

Although many of us like to DIY, Dr. Sponaugle does not recommend cleaning black mold yourself.

I do not recommend for anyone to put their health at risk by cleaning black mold themselves, thats what professionals are trained to do. I especially do not recommend anyone to clean black mold with chlorine or bleach. When you do so, you then rupture the cell wall, which is where the lethal mycotoxins are contained. If you bleach the spore, you then rupture the spore, and you will release those toxins throughout the air in your home, school, or workspace.

However, we realize not everyone can call a professional. If you must clean it yourself, a professional citrus spray removal is recommended. The citrus encapsulates the spore first, then kills the spore, and can dissolve the volatile organic compounds, i.e., the mold mycotoxins. There are several sprays on the market now, so please do your due diligence before purchasing.

Now that you have done your research on which citrus mold removal spray is most effective seal off the room where the black mold is located. Shut the doors, cover the vents, doors, etc. You dont want any spores escaping.

Place an exhaust fan to where the spores go out, ideally near a window

Wear gloves, a facemask, goggles, and cover all exposed skin when cleaning out the black mold.

I Heard About Toxic Molds And Black Molds That Grow In Homes And Other Buildings Should I Be Concerned About A Serious Health Risk To Me And My Family

There is always a little mold everywhere in the air and on many surfaces.

Certain molds are toxigenic, meaning they can produce toxins . Hazards presented by molds that may produce mycotoxins should be considered the same as other common molds which can grow in your house. Not all fungi produce mycotoxins and even those that do will not do so under all surface or environmental conditions.

Mold growth, which often looks like spots, can be many different colors, and can smell musty. Color is not an indication of how dangerous a mold may be. Any mold should be removed and the moisture source that helped it grow should be removed.

There are very few reports that toxigenic molds found inside homes can cause unique or rare health conditions such as pulmonary hemorrhage or memory loss. These case reports are rare, and a causal link between the presence of the toxigenic mold and these conditions has not been proven.

Why Is There Black Stuff In Toilet After Flushing

If you notice black stuff after flushing your toilet it means that either the pipes that supply water to your house have some rust or leaks. The leaks and rust harbor black mold that is then transferred to your toilet tank.

At the same time, black stuff could indicate an issue with the water itself. The water may be dirty, with mineral deposits or some unidentified residue that is black.

Why Black Mold Shows Up In Toilet

The main reason why mold can grow and shows up at several place is because its moisture. The moisture is too high at that place, which create good environment for fungus to grow. How about toilet? Isnt it toilet can be categorized as the place that always wet? The main black mold in toilet causes is the ventilation.

The water or moisture that leaves behind after you use it also has big part. But, if your toilet has good ventilation or fans that can make the air flow smoothly, the chance of mold is pretty much low.

The other cause is when you leave your house for long time, like when you have vacation or business to other town for couple weeks. Usually, if you dont close the faucet correctly, the water keeps coming out.

Then the stagnant water can increase the moisture and make the right condition for mold to grow. The worst case is when the black mold happens in the toilet tank. Mostly, black mold in the toilet tank is unnoticeable after a long time, because its rare for people to check this part of their toilet. They realize after the black mold has spread and become worst. Of course, if you are cleaning your toilet regularly, which is the real thoroughly cleaning process, you can find it immediately and clean it up.
