Copyflex Liquid Silicone Mold Making Rubber

CopyFlex® is a food grade, liquid silicone rubber that was designed specifically for mold making. Unlike many liquid silicones that have complicated mix ratios and very thick consistencies, CopyFlex® is easy to use because equal amounts of both catalyst and base are combined to produce a silky smooth, low viscosity liquid silicone rubber that reproduces the finest details. A 1:1 mix ratio is very convenient for large projects and also enables moldmakers to easily pour molds that may weigh as little as two ounces. Conventional liquid silicone mold making rubber often has a cure time of 24 to 36 hours which is very long when compared to CopyFlex® which will cure in four hours at 70 degrees F.

Most Common Mold Types
Blanket Mold
This is by far the easiest type of mold. It is often use to reproduce plaques and models in which one side is not covered by mold material. In this process, the original is fixed to a base usually with hot glue and the molding material is poured over it and allowed to cure. When set, the mold is flipped over and the original removed to reveal the blanket mold ready for casting material.
Block Mold
In this process, the original is fastened inside a mold box or container. The mold material is introduced and filled to about one inch higher than the highest part of the original. When the mold is removed from the box or its container it resembles a block of mold material, thus its name. To remove the original a slice is made on each side of the rubber the going two-thirds down. The mold is spread open like a clam shell and the original is removed. A rubber band is used to keep the mold closed when the casting material is poured.
Two-Part or Complex Mold
For a complicated original, a more complicated mold must be constructed. First one side is molded, followed by the other side. Or if even more complicated addition mold pieces need to be made.

There are number of types of molds to name a few: blow, injection, matrix, extrusion, rotational, spin and transfer. The majority of which require specialized equipment to complete the process. Easy To Use Silicone Mold Rubber
Mold Star silicones cure to soft, strong rubbers which are tear resistant and exhibit very low long term shrinkage. Molds made with Mold Star will last a long time in your mold library and are good for casting wax, gypsum, resins, and other materials. Cured Mold Star rubber is heat resistant up to 450°F and is suitable for casting low-temperature melt metal alloys.

Volume:
- 1 pound of CopyFlex® = 12 1/2 fluid oz. = 1 1/2 cups = 3/4 pint
- 1 pound of CopyFlex® = 370 millileters = .37 liters
- 1 pound of CopyFlex® = 22.85 cubic inches
How to Calculate Quantity Needed:
In inches, take the L x W x Thickness of the area you will be covering with the CopyFlex®. This will give you the total cubic inches of the CopyFlex® layer that you are going to use to make your mold. Then multiply total cubic inches by .70 to find the weight in ounces of CopyFlex® you will need. Divide this number by 16 to calculate pounds of CopyFlex® required.
Example: Lets say you need to cover an area that is 9 inches wide and you want to apply a layer of CopyFlex® that is 1/4 thick.
The calculation is as follows: 9 x 9 x 1/4 = 20.25 cubic inches x .70 = 14 ounces in weight.

Platinum-Cured Silicone Rubber
Platinum-cured , room temperature-curing silicones that cure to flexible, high-strength rubbers. Platinum-cured silicone rubber is an excellent mold material, but select silicone products are also widely used as a casting medium in applications including medical modeling, special effects, and orthotics.
This line includes options that comply with 21 CFR 177.2600 for repeated use food contact surfaces as well as skin-safe options in the PlatSil® Gel Series.
