This is not surprising as the increased awareness of health and wellness has led to the popularity of natural alternatives. Most of the natural cleaning agents that are designed to remove mold contain thyme oil which is derived from the leaves of the thyme herb.

Our favorite of the natural cleaners is Benefect. The main ingredient is thyme sourced from farms in Europe. Benefect is very effective at killing mold and it leaves behind a pleasant thyme smell. Unfortunately, natural cleaners like Benefect do not remove those ugly mold stains after treatment.

    Cleaning Black Mold With Ammonia

Make an ammonia solution using a ratio of 1 part of ammonia to 1 part of water. Fill a spray bottle with ammonia solution and spray it onto the moldy surfaces. Leave the solution to sit for a number of hours before rinsing with water. After rinsing or wiping with water, allow the areas to dry completely. For vinyl seats like in your boat, combine 1/4 cup of ammonia with 1 cup of water, and pour this solution into a spray bottle. Spray the mold with this mixture, and scrub it with a bristle brush. Rinse the solution off with clean water to remove it from the vinyl seats. If you still notice mold on the seats, use rubbing alcohol.

NOTE Ammonia, similar to bleach kills mold growing on non-porous materials like bathtubs, tiles, countertops, and glass. However ammonia is not an effective killer for mold growing in porous materials like drywall and woods. Ammonia is a harsh chemical, it emits toxic fumes when mixed with bleach. Use ammonia with care.

    An Important Note About No

In order to remove mold you have to physically remove it. Removing it requires elbow grease. This means scrubbing, sanding, or cutting out pieces of moldy building material. You cant get around this. If a mold remover product claims that no scrubbing is necessary, it likely means that there is a bleaching agent involved or something akin to bleach. Not only does this mean that the product is toxic but it wont actually remove the mold. Check out my post on Does Bleach Kill Mold for more information.

    Limit Your Exposure To Mold

Its important to limit your exposure to mold and mold spores. Keep them out of your eyes and try not to inhale any.

    • Wear a mask or an N-95 respirator to avoid inhaling mold.
    • Wear gloves that extend to the middle of your forearm. If youre just using water and a mild detergent, household rubber gloves work fine.
    • Wear goggles that dont have ventilation holes to avoid getting mold or spores in your eyes.

Why Bleach Doesnt Work To Kill Mold

Bleach works to remove the appearance of mold, but it doesnt kill it. This is because mold has a branching, thread-like root system known as mycelium.

When you use bleach to clean, you typically create a solution of bleach diluted with water. The mold problem recurs because the bleach itself evaporates away very quickly, leaving the water to soak back into the wood or other porous surface, rehydrating the mycelium, and encouraging the mold to come back. Even, the Environmental Protection Agency doesnt recommend using bleach for routine mold cleanup.
